Agreed. Brosnan will always be special to me and will be seen as my "favorite," regardless of his films, because I was introduced to the series through GE and I grew up and became a huge fan during his tenure.
I get where your coming from.
I put him above Connery back then. He just was Bond to me and whenever I thought of the name, his face came instinctively into my head.
Fixed it for you ;)
Same here, I was introduced through The World Is Not Enough and Nightfire.
That's definitely wrong. ;))
I watched GE at 13 years old at the cinema. After watching all the Bond films previously I found GE very average and Brosnan just ok. His performance in GE and the film in general is his best though.
Ok it's aged a bit but I still find it a lot of fun and have a big soft spot for it.
The first Bond film I saw was GE on VHS (my first cinema Bond was TND) so you're probably just a bit behind me.
I don't really mind people being critical of TND but it hurts a bit when I hear people say things like "GE is awful" or "GE is average". Not to me it wasn't.
I still know of plenty of people who rank him amongst the best portrayals. His films may have a reassessment but I don't think his portrayal did. It's sad because he gets a lot of crap for having some of the more weaker installments. He came out on a high with Goldeneye, a film in my top 5 Bond movies. TND was quite generic but fun cheesy 90s entertainment. I personally loved TWINE, but that's just me. Then he unfortunately had to leave after the abysmal Die Another Day.
Craig on the other hand. I like the guy, and I think Casino Royale and Skyfall are tremendous movies, but for me, I just rather prefer Connery, Brosnan, and Moore before him. I'll admit I have nostalgia, but still. Just a personal opinion. Hell I think I'd put Dalton over Craig.
I do find Craig's "performance" overrated. I like him, but he's my least favourite Bond, but I still like him. That said, he's not "that great" everyone refers to regarding his performance in Casino Royale. His best acting performance in the Bond series is in Skyfall, whereas I think his most Bondian was in Spectre, if anyone knows where my reference is heading to.
Proof?
That said I still think Craig is the actor with more range.
However, we all know Brosnan could do dark sided characters quite well, too. I could imagine his Bond going utterly dark, cold and even ruthlessly sadistic to obtain what's rightful.
This picture makes me want to see that!
I prefer Craig as 007 (it's not even close for me), but I much prefer watching Brosnan as a film actor outside of his Bond persona.
He is more castable since he just has that leading man look & charisma (even now), and I don't think Craig does (sorry folks). If Brosnan were a better actor, he could have been like Clooney, because his looks similarly do him a lot of favours.
Sky Movies? Just caught the end of the DB10 chase when I got in from work. Funny that, how I own all the films but whenever one's on TV I'll stick it on even if it's just for five minutes.
Pretty much this. Brosnan is a good actor, imo, but he's not as versatile as Craig, who I think is by far the best actor to take on the role.
But as Bond? I like Craig, and I've warmed to him even more after SF and SP, but I prefer Brosnan. Probably my second favourite after Dalton. There was just something about him that oozed cool, a great action hero but he was good in the darker scenes too and I think bought more depth than most give him credit for.
