Only Bilbo will be able to touch Batsy. Bond hasnt got a chance at all in the box office this year with those two behemoths arriving.

SF if its a good film and with the 50th hype should hopefully get to the $400m mark.

TDKR will easily cruise past $600m at least. Cant see it topping TDK though for as other people have mentioned you cant buy the sort of publicity you get when one of the leads dies.

I reckon Heath popping off must have put at least 15-20% on the box office.

However although the Oscar was probably largely sympathy I do think it was a fantastic performance and deserved - although without the death factor would a superhero film be getting nominated? Did jack Nicholson get nominated in 89? I cant remmber.

Masterpiece?? Let's not get ahead of ourselves. TDK was a good movie at best. A good crime thriller where the only stand out and memorable moments were Heath Ledger's performance.

i think it will easily get to $400 million... i estimate that it should also easily eclipse the $500 million mark as well

Casino Royale pulled in $594.2 million worldwide

Quantum Of Solace pulled in $586.1 million worldwide

and with the average ticket prices steadily increasing year after year, i think it's a safe bet that it'll get over $500 million - even with Twilight opening a week after it... and then The Hobbit later on around Christmas.

Yeah good point. I think I was reckoning it in pounds but then put dollars.

Ah, that would explain the major box office hit that was The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (ledgers last movie) which also cleaned up at the Oscars and broke every record ever made.

    ... oh wait

    Yeah well seeing as

    a) Ledger had completed so little of the film that they recast his part

    b) when has a Terry Gilliam film ever cleaned up at either box office or Oscars?

I think your argument lacks substance.

TDK was always going to break the 500m barrier but the fact that it was a very good film in its own right, not just for fans of Batman, multiplied by Ledgers death boosted takings expoentially.

Dr Parnassus was never going to make much but I'm sure that Ledgers death must have put a bit on it. Difference is 15% of 800m odd sends you into the stratoshpere. 15% of 20m is barely noticeable in box ofice terms.

I'm just tired of the excuse that a persons death was the factor for TDK being so popular. It was a good movie. The hype from the masses was there long before he died. It would have made as much money if he hadnt died and he would have won the oscar anyway.

Also, its been 4 years. People need to let it go and move on.

Ledgers death wasn't the factor that boosted TDK's BO. It was however, A contributing factor and ignoring it or convincing yourself otherwise is absurd. Yes, it has been 4 years and if it's still lost to people after all this time then keep rowing your boat in denial.

0BradyM0Bondfanatic7 TDKR definitely has the upper hand, but my heart goes with SkyFall you know. After-release reports do have a huge impact. I really hope Mendes pulls this one so well.

There's no way a Bond movie can compete with the cultural juggernaut of the Nolan "Batman" series. Bond won't even come close.

Now, even tho I'm a comic book fanatic who has read thousands of BM comics, I'm not a fan of the Nolan BM series. They're very well made but something's "off" there for me. I'd *love* to see a Nolan Bond movie, but I can't get into live-action BM movies much.

So, for me, Bond23 is going to be waaaaay better than TDKR!!
I don't think this will be so for the average movie goer...

MrSpy, never say never. Spiderman series failed after a decent start, which was not expected. Now, talking about SkyFall director, Sam Mendes, who's known for making movies of the caliber that win at least Oscar nominations, and you add the Bond franchise to it, it becomes an unbeatable combination. You can definitely expect a mind blowing story. It's a must watch for everyone, even if he's not a Bond fan. And if someone expects a Sean Connery or Roger Moore kind of Bond flick from Mendes, he'll surely be disappointed.

Btw since we're talking about batman, here's the ugly truth how Batman started... :D
