I never thought much about the Bond world being a mans world as well. When I was watching QOS, a man next to me was commenting on how surprisingly many women were at that show (I could have told him the reason, but didn't).
I always thought, that Bond was as much for women, because aren't they supposed to be attracted by the actor playing the role PLUS the genre of danger, fast cars and living life in the fast line as much as the guys?
When I started reading the Bond boards 5 years ago, I was surprised by the amount of fanatism the fans have for their idol. The figure Bond, not the actors...its quite amazing.
As a woman to survive here, I think, you have to keep your humor and not let them scare you away :D
Exactly, Germanlady! And there are some, I think, who would be happier if this were an all male world (this forum). But Bond is definitely part of our world, too, and Bond is for sure meant for women to enjoy as well. Loved the books as a teen; I feel that the character is part of my life, just one of my favorite things. I've seen every Bond film but am not a super Bond geek in that I don't have tons of quotes memorized (well, yeah maybe quite a few ...) or know tiny details about each movie. For example, I enjoy our caption contests, but I have a hard time guessing right on the Guess the Character thread. This forum is interesting to me. I also like reading about the debates on the music, the books, as well as the whole lifestyle.
So welcome back, thelordflasheart. I will probably be stopping by this website less and less as Skyfall approaches - or at least not clicking on the Skyfall news and spoilers, but it will be hard. I enjoy our discussions here. But I do not want to know all about the movie before it arrives in Japan (which I hope is not the projected January date);, that would ruin it for me. Anyway, let's pop on our shades and raise a martini glass (or Heineken) to us girls. B-)

So, you're a Batman fan? Slap me, but I didn't rate his Batman. He was good in a couple of other films, but his Batman was weak IMO. (I know, I am in the minority with this given the success of TDK)
What's your opinion on Bond being more for males? I do admit, that I am not the least interested in discussing cars or watches or somesuch to an extend. I am happy, if the stuff LOOKS good :)) I suppose, that is a very female way to treat it. Almost out of the book attitude, I might add... :>
As for the films as a whole - I always thought, they should and did aply to females as much as to males. They might just discuss different things..

And speaking of hyper-masculine, I'm glad to see that there are women who brave some of the comments and remain here. From absurdly obvious jealously (guys going ballistic that women find the actor playing Bond attractive - huh? SERIOUSLY?) to guys calling actresses ugly when they are in fact a hundred times better looking than any woman who would ever talk to them in the real world...well, I'm glad that that doesn't put you off! Although I suppose that there is some twisted humour to be found there...

I ask the ladies of the forum, do you want to be with Bond? Do you fancy yourself as a traditional old fashioned, needs to be saved by Bond / love interest type Bond girl or the more modern approach of Bond's equal, type Bond girl. I.e fellow spy? Prehaps a villian?
Or do you see yourself as Bond, either as a female version or male fantasy?
I'm just plain old boring, want to be Bond. Occasionally I think it would be good to be a villian! (BTW I'm a grown man that hasn't fully grown up)
He is sexy, attractive, dangerous to boot, capable of guiding you through the darkest corners of the world and a man, a woman just dies to steal his heart, because she senses, its hidden very, very deep behind all sorts of emotional walls. That's about as irresistible as it gets. He is vulnerable, but doesn't show it. A woman would want to save him (Bond/Vesper dialogue in CR).
I think, modern or old fashioned woman - it doesn't make a difference. They cannot help but falling for him and get weak. Well - a bit - sometimes.
Fort me, after following him for such a long time, I found all of this in Daniel, as DC himself, not only as Bond. That's probably, why I like him so much. Plus, he might not be easy, but is decent to the bone.
I don't believe the bold to be true, certainly for a fact not in my case. You would be surprised how many beautiful single women out there who don't date much because men are intimidated by their looks, the men don't have confidence in themselves, and don't bother to talk to them because they fear rejection. And when they do, men are clueless how to speak to them. Some very attractive women don't necessarily make the first move either because they may be a little shy to do so or have esteem issues. Granted, being a musician does attract women who like your music and your look maybe more than the average guy, and that definitely worked for me back in that day, but no matter you still have to know how to speak to a woman and have a compatible personality that she can relate to. Let me put it this way- Heather Locklear smiled at me and introduced herself to me in 1986 and she didn't know I was friends with Nick until later when her and Tommy sat down to have drinks with us. She just preferred the look and company of long haired musicians and many women famous and not feel the same way. So when I say I have dated women better looking than a Bond girl like Corinne Clery as an example of a Bond woman I consider to be not good looking, well, I have and I have no reason to lie. Here's how it works fellas. The woman calls the shots and if she likes you or learns to, then she does, and how famous or beautiful she might be shouldn't matter as far as you are concerned unless you are going to allow yourself to be intimidated and act like a fool. Gents, how to date a Bond girl or one who looks like one isn't rocket science nor it is impossible. Believe in yourself and many things you didn't think were possible suddenly become very possible and it can happen.
I loved the BlackAdders I saw in the late 1980's, funny stuff. Didn't see too many but laughed at what I did.
This argument makes no sense! Bond is a form of escapist cinema. The deal is you pay your cinema entrance fee or stump up the money to buy the DVD/Blu-ray and in return you are admitted entrance for a couple of hours into a more exciting, and - yes - BETTER LOOKING world than the one you probably inhabit!
What do we want, a new era of 'austerity bond', in which Bond's world has to match that of the average male fan? He is no longer allowed to drive in expensive cars, eat expensive food, stay in luxurious hotels, break the speed limit or consort with the most beautiful women.
Anyway, how do you know that a lot of the male forum users aren't good looking? And maybe not all women are attracted just by looks anyway.
Finally, for me, the more aggressive and 'masculine' the bond woman is the more charmless she seems, and in order to make up for it, the more visually beautiful she has to look in order to be appealing. I'd take the wonderfully charming Corinne Dufour over the aggressive Xennia Onnatop anyday, even if the later is deemed 'more beautiful' than the former!
Weren't there always those two types of women - the agressive "baddie" and the slightly more feminine "good" girl?
That sounds more like you think the character is the opposite of the average man. What I'm saying is that the novels, and then the films were successful as they offered a hyped-up, version of the average man's world. Including all the traits that men possess and the things that they are interested in and amplifying them!
Strange as it may seem I agree with both of you. This thread is becoming very interesting! Throughout the day I checked to see the comments coming in, some great, some terrible, but I couldn't post (work!) but now I came back and I enjoy the rout this is taking, I just hope there is no derailing!
Thats just my taste though. Many men prefer the dominatrix characters.
Exactly GL. It is escapist fantasy for both sexes but there almost always is, or should be, a grounded reality about them. Once in awhile you get something totally outlandish like MR or DAD, but almost everything on screen in a Bond film can be obtained and that lifestyle can be lived.
I haven't read the novels, but the films certainly don't show us an average man - what they show us is, like you said - a bit blown out of proportion man with traits, that women and men alike prefer in their heros. Would they really want to live with them? Would they really be like them? Who knows...
But the Bond world wouldn't exist with an "average" man.
