I was always under the impression that Cubby in the 80s, circa Dalton being casted, was again trying to obtain the Casino Royale rights - and had he gotten them, he would've made CR instead of Daylights - and it would've been a reboot, showing Bond starting off his career as 007, this time with Timothy Dalton..... at least thats how it's come off on a DVD featurette I once saw.... Cubby had wanted to do CR first with Connery, but couldn't... he fought for years to get the rights to do it, knowing though that the only way it could be done justice, was to have Bond as a rookie agent like in the novel.... i can't remember which DVD this is on - but i'm pretty sure it's on one of the CR ones..
so if that is true - then MGW and BB are just fulfilling their father's dream..
but even with that bit of exposition about his past in CR, I don't think that does anything to damage the character - references to Bond's past (namely the death of his wife) had been made under Cubby's watch during his run....
references or nods, maybe even slight plot inclusions of the past aren't bad IMO - but the series and films shouldn't constantly dwell there.... the bit in CR is nothing new to Bond fans, and it's such a small bit, that I don't see the uproar over it - it's not like they pulled back the curtain on anything..
