MI6 Forum Surprises

edited April 2012 in Bond Movies Posts: 643
Ok, so we all love the Bond films in general and we all have our different opinions on what we like and what we don't like. As I am new to the forum, I've taken time to read alot of the former threads and have found out some people hold some surprising opinions. I thought this thread could be used to discuss any surprising conclusions made from frequenting the forums.

For example, reading people's list rating the Bond films, I am amazed, in general, that a high number of people rate Goldeneye so highly but think so lowly of Diamonds are Forever!

that's what makes this forum interesting and enjoyable...a shared loved of the series but a difference of perspective on each film

Well before coming on this forum, I assumed that Brosnan was well liked but he seems to get a lot of hate, Rog would be pretty much universally hated on here but there seems to be plenty of love for him here.

I thought most people would be Craig lovers and have the blinkers on about QOS but I was suprised to see that a lot of people consider it the worst of the series so far like myself.

There is quite a difference in how Bond fans view the series and how the public in general view it.
Dalton is enormously popular among fans, but not so among casual film fans and critics. The opposite is apparant of Pierce Brosnan.

What surprises me most when I discuss with "non fans" is that they tend to view Bond as the almost comical charachter depicted in some of the Moore era films, and some of the Brosnan era. They don't like the Craig films because they lack humour, ridiculous gadgets, witty one liners, etc ...

I for myself am very glad with the direction the production has taken since CR, and many of the fans here seem to share that opinion.

But for me there is a surprising gap between us and "the public" in general.

I am astonished at times when Sean Connery is neglected as the obvious best Bond of them all.

Well, yes - he WAS Bond. There wouldn't be a continuation without him.

I'm surprised that most here neglect the majority of my favorite movies, but worship some of the more melodramatic movies, like CR & OHMSS.

And the PB hate is also puzzling.

I love the Moore films, I love GE/TND, I love DAF and YOLT.... but it doesn't stop me from enjoying more serious films like TLD, OHMSS, FRWL.

Same for me, it's just a matter of preference. I like the Moore movies the most, but all Bond films are good and entertaining.

Well I'm gonna make the controversial statement, since I have thought it more than once: I think part of it (for some) may actually be jealosy.
It doesn't make sense to me at all; it is way overblown (Brosnan haters).

Could be. And many here might also just jump on the bandwagon. Since most here hate Brosnan, many others might blindly agree because "that's the way to think".

Personally, I don't hate him, he's just my least favourite. I dislike his portrayal of Bond, but I still watch the movies where he played Bond and often enjoy them (if I view them as pure entertainment and nothing else); I also appreciate his work outside of the series.

I guess I've been guilty of my fair share of Brosnan bashing on this forum and to be honest I'm not really sure why, yes he is my least favourite but unlike @Volante I didn't dislike his portrayal of Bond and at the time I felt he was the right man for the job, it's only now with Craig's interpretation that I find the need to share my new found dissatisfaction of Pierce. I suppose over time posting on this forum just hardens our opinions and polarises our views.

As for this thread I was surprised to find that there are at least four or five fans on here who actually don't mind DAD, I thought it's appreciation would be much lower than that!

    A few surprises for me:

*The almost universal praise for TB. While I enjoy it, I preferred all the other Connery films above it, except for maybe DN. TB and FRWL seem to be the general favorites around here.

*Many dislike GF and TSWLM with a passion. I often even see these ranked near the bottom of people's rankings! I never even thought of how "Connery has nothing to do and is locked up for half the movie" in GF. I'm still a bit bewildered by this assessment

*Anya is a hideous alien looking Bond girl- :O Really??? I didn't think she was that bad.

*MR is considered (by many but not all) one of the better Moore films- I was also surprised by this. Historically, MR has been a blacksheep of the series.

*I was actually surprised how much hate there is towards DAD. I remember not exactly loving it in the cinemas, but not to the level it is reviled here.

Perhaps what has surprised me more is the hate to Goldfinger o its low ranking according to a not small group of fans. As it was the first Bond movie I saw, I've always been very fond of GF, although I recognize its many flaws.

Actually, I think it is because they are discerning.

I am not joking or being cruel. I will explain why.

Before Brosnan there were the films - yes - but also the books. It was from the books that that Bonds DNA comes from. That tough charismatic intense agent which we got with Connery. Moore was the complete opposite but had the charm to pull it off. But it all returned with Dalton. We had two films which seemed to return to the Fleming roots.

Brosnan seemed like a step backwards.

He was so expected in the role he didnt bring anything new to the table. He didnt need to try - so he didn't. He also wasnt best served by his films - but they were written around him.

So, while from me, its never dislike. I do consider him the weakest because each of the others brought something new to the character and his was just going over old ground.

The big surprise to me with fandom is GE. On release I was grateful it wasnt an embarassmewnt. On subsequent viewings I find it very average but it is like a sacred cow sometimes around here.

He was a step backwards from Dalton, but nobody can/will live up to him. I enjoyed Brosnan, imo he's the 2nd best Bond along with Connery.

Brozza is so firmly ensconsed as the worst ever Bond it's difficult to imagine any one ever dislodging him. Perhaps if they cast Jack Black....

    Actually, that'd be pretty good.
  • Hmmm interesting. It's not like I dislike Brosnan as such...I just prefer Connery, Moore, Dalton better. The Goldeneye following on the forum, as one poster pointed out, is surprising. It's ok, best of the modern Bond (1995-Present) but that's really not saying much. Forgetting Lazenby because he was a Connery clone, the three actors before Brosnan each left a mark on the character and series and showed a different interpretation. Just feel Brosnan is a younger version of Moore's Bond, just not as good.

I need to look at Goldfinger again, I am surprised people don't rate it that highly.

I'm surprised people haven't really said what stops The Living Daylights being ranked as a classic Bond is the very poor villains!

There's nothing that stops me from ranking The Living Daylights. As for it's villains, I don't think they're weak. There's one physical villain (Necros), one intellectual villain (Koskov) and one that's sort of in between (Whitaker). I also like that Whitaker as an obsession with war, it feels to me like something Fleming would have dreamed up.

    I'm surprised anyone hates Dench's M.
I'm surprised that people think Brosnan was a huge step down; he was quite a good bond in my opinion.
I'm surprised that men are surprised there are definitely Bond fans who are women and some like to discuss Bond, too. (Not surprised we are in the minority on a forum, though).
I'm surprised anyeone would think that GE was a poor Bond movie.
I'm suprised at the sometimes strong support for OHMSS.
I'm surprised that some dislike Casino Royale a lot.

I'm surprised by the contortions people go through to find positive things to say about Brosnan's Bond (it usually seems to relate to his box office takings)
I'm surprised by how much uncritical love Casino gets
I'm surprised by how much hate QoS gets
I'm surprised any one finds fault with the clown suit in Octopussy
I'm surprised any one doesn't like Tim Dalton

Hate to say this but...I hate Dench's M, thought Brosnan was a very poor Moore clone and GE was substandard, I love OHMSS and I don't like CR. Haha as far removed as possible. Just out of interest....what is it about GE that seemse to have captivated people?

Well we all do vary in our opinions, that's natural. I thought Goldeneye was very well written, well paced beautifully shot, very good actors throughout, fun scenes and had spirit and charm. The only thing missing was the classic M. Norman Bond theme but it returned with TND because so many fans complained. I just think Goldeneye was a very good film with few flaws.

A few flaws? TRY NONE!!! Hahaha, to answer @SignedbyRogerMoore's original question, GoldenEye should not be questioned. It just is. End of discussion! :-bd
