U know what goldeneye would have been a success with???
    A competent composer

So the entire film is a failure solely because of the composer? I wouldn't go that far.

There are lots of reasons to dislike GE and the music is one of a them. Having Dalton come back wouldn't have changed that

Agree. GE is better in part than the whole. The Satellite in space rehash plot is questionable too.

GE's plot is as lame as they get frankly.

What I'm saying is that goldeneye would be easily top 5 but because i would rather listen to it with subtitles, it gets relegated to like 9 maybe 10

The more I think about it, I think GE could have been a success with Dalton (most Bond films are financially successful, including LTK, despite its disappointing worldwide gross).

However, should GE have starred Dalton? On that question, my answer is definitely no. I think that film required a new Bond actor and an entirely new approach. That is what made it feel so fresh in 1995, and why it was as successful as it was. The timing was right for a change, and I'm grateful that Dalton stepped down when he did, making way for the younger and dare I say 'slicker' Brosnan, who was able to reinject some of the light charm back into the franchise. Dalton's preferred direction & approach would have been a bit dour for that film, and I don't think he could have pivoted sufficiently to make his portrayal as credible in a more 'style oriented' outing like GE.

I think things worked out as they should have. Had there been another Bond film in the early 90's, then Dalton certainly could have done that one, although I don't really see him fitting into the rumoured robot film either. Dalton, like Craig after him, works best within certain specific parameters, with limited fantasy aspects.

That would make me feel how some of you chaps feel about Brosnan. I'm thankful that never happened.

Dalton was a much more interesting actor than Brosnan, but he simply didn't appeal to the public during his tenure as Bond. The late 80s were a terrible time to assume the role, since the Moore approach was played out and the public wasn't interested in the series taking a more realistic path. Could Dalton have performed credibly in GoldenEye? Yes, but he wouldn't have looked very happy doing so. The film is a pastiche of the early Connery and late Moore Bond films with an overlay of Schwarzenegger/Stallone/Willis action tropes, and that's ultimately what the public wanted from Bond during the frivolous 90s. And that's what Dalton would have had no interest in doing--he always looked impatient dealing with the more cliched parts of the series. Furthermore, the public wouldn't have been terribly interested in seeing Dalton return either, and that's what counts most, though one could plausibly argue that a better release date and better ad campaign would at least have resulted in TLD (instead of LTK) grosses.

Dalton always named Casino Royale as his touchstone, and his tragedy is that he was born 20 years too soon to star in the film that would have suited him to a T. Like Dalton, Craig was a respected actor with indie credentials and some Hollywood experience who was given the role to bring the Bond down to earth. The difference is that in 2006 the public was ready for that, and EON had finally got the rights to the story Dalton always wanted to star in. Imagining Dalton in the 2006 Casino Royale will always be a thrill, and I think he would have definitely been a success in the film, though of course there is no way he could have appeared in it, outside of an alternate universe Bond series.

    @Murdock

Naturally I would settle for Dalton 1987-1989, Brosnan 1995-2002, Dalton 2006-2022

Dalton would not have worked in the current GE. In order to make him work, they would have to change the script substantially, and therefore it would not be the same film anymore. I'm a fan of Dalton, and a fan of Brosnan, but GE with Dalton would not have been a success anymore than Brosnan in LTK would have been a success.

That too actually. Yes, as long as it is Dalton and/or Brosnan to this day

I agree. The CR that they gave us in 2006 was tailor made for Dalton. In fact, I always imagine that he is in CR when I watch that scene in LTK when he's in the Isthmus casino and later in the hotel lift with Pam on their way to confront Q. The scene in CR before the Obanno stairwell confrontation is eerily similar.

I hadn't picked up on that resemblance before, but you're absolutely right--it feels very much like the sniper experience Bond discusses in the book, at the Japanese consulate.

Yes I've noticed that before too. It's better in CR though.

The CR that they gave us in 2006 was tailor made for Craig. I feel Dalton may have struggled with the overtly romantic scenes. The CR book was tailor made for Dalton. The film was more romantic and soppy.

Would Dr No have been a success with Craig? Yes if he was alive at the time.
Would Quantum Of Solace have been a success with Peter Sellers? No. Sellers should stay the f**k away from Bond. He's an overated comedy actor....and a s**t one at that. ;).

To answer the first question, yes but with significant caveats. Craig could have pulled it off, but I firmly believe we wouldn't have Bond today if Connery hadn't done DN in 1962. King Sean's definitive performance (under Terence Young's masterful direction) is what made the Bond legend come alive on screen. Craig is good, but anyone who thinks he is in Connery's league (I've heard that a couple of times on this forum) is just completely wrong in my opinion.

Could Peter Sellers have made QoS a success? Yes, if the film was structured as a comedy.

I don't think Sellers was funny at all personally. Certainly not by today's more sophisticated standards.
