Would Goldeneye have been a success with Dalton?

I watched the pre-title sequence for GE yesterday. I was knocked out how "second-fiddle" Brosnan Bond was compared with SB-- who seems to be commanding the mission (and, is by far the colder killer). Plus, the charismatic-weight of each actor is tilted heavily in Bean's favour. He truly fills the screen.

    Very interesting PTS.

"I tought Pierce Brosnan really worked, unlike perhaps some of the people who've tried it recently".

1 minute mark in the Barry Norman segment.

    Ouch!

Bean does seem the more physically commanding of the two in the PTS but I think Brosnan still has an impact with his striking looks and stern facial expressions.

I’m certainly watching both of them.

That’s one thing I want to know. Was Dalton actually missed by anyone back in ‘95 other than the hardcore fans?

I agree that they are both highly watchable and Brosnan looks great. Bean wins in the voice dept though, particular in comparison to Brossa's breathy Jack Bauer approach. He has a very commanding voice and I love his philosophical musings in the PTS and throughout the film. Cheesy but fun. Love the overdone accent too (I realize most hate it).

It's a shame that we don't have all of Barry Norman's Bond reviews available, starting with Live & Let Die right up to his very last one. I can't remember what he said about TND? I'm guessing that whatever nice things he said about Brosnan in GE were snatched away when he reviewed TND.

That's probably impossible to gauge. I'm sure that there were plenty of average paying cinemagoers that were peeved that a lightweight TV actor such as Brosnan got to replace Dalton, they just weren't heard is all. I think Brosnan was a bigger hit with the female crowd than the men.

I vaguely remember the TND review in 1997.

I think he gave it a pass but said that Pryce, though a brilliant actor, doesn’t have the impact he should have as a Bond villain.

Not sure what his views were on TWINE and DAD.

I know a massive Bond fan (and a huge Dalton fan) who proudly claims he told Brosnan directly exactly what he thought of him in GE after the premier. Brosnan was quickly whisked away by Michael G. Wilson.

    (Clue: he wasn’t impressed).

Yeah, I can't remember when he switched to Sky? That's when I stopped watched Barry Norman. I DO recall the reviews for TND being overall rather muted at the time.

Ha ha. This was a friend of yours, you say? As I pointed out, I always got the impression that Brosnan was incredibly popular with the ladies—probably the most popular 007 with the ladies since Connery. The men less so. Your friend clearly is a male fan that wasn't too impressed by Brosnan either.

Brozz did come across like a weed to a degree, I'll admit. He was a bit affected in interviews around that time too. Trying too hard.

It's just that he brought back the cinematic 'cool' which I just felt Bond needed at that time. Coincidentally, I feel the same now.

I can watch Goldeneye 1000 times and not get tired. It does a much better job of rewatch ability than any of the Craig films. Brosnan was the man for the moment. We need someone like that for these times, and Craig isn't that anymore. They need someone actually charismatic this time.

I’ve met him through another online fan group. Something of a vocal keyboard warrior online. These days his nickname for PB is ‘Drossnan’ and let’s just say, having been introduced to Bond through GE, me and him don’t quite see eye to eye.

@Getafix might get on with him though.

I think it was just a quick meeting for a few seconds. He managed to get out that he didn’t like him in the film and that Dalton should come back before the ‘meeting’ abruptly ended.

@bondjames regarding Brosnan's weedy/pretty look I actually think he looked better in the film than he did during interviews and press photos at that time (I'm thinking of the one in the Q lab with Desmond, Isabella and Famke in particular).

Ha ha. I was wondering how you two would get along. You've got to be total polar opposites.

I couldn’t stand him prior to meeting him. Then he seemed alright. VERY into his Bond and pretty much an expert on the novels (I’ve read most of them at least once but not all, he’s read them all many times).

I agree about Brosnan’s considerable popularity with the ladies. Even my own mother prefers him over Connery (she has never understood his appeal) and Daniel Craig (who she think looks like Jeremy Kyle).

I only remember a few interviews with him at the time, and also vaguely, but he seemed very self conscious. Far more so than I've since seen him in earlier interviews, like the Wogan one you posted somewhere a few years back. It was almost like one could sense the pressure he was under.

He often does that awkward shifting around in his chair during interviews

Even here he looks a tad too pretty (a but like how he looked during the casino scenes in Monte Carlo) but wow...Isabella:

I'm going to admit that I much preferred Izabella Scorupco as a blonde. I didn't much care for haircut or colour in GE.

I've always thought Craig looked like Jeremy Kyle too. Don't tell Germanlady, she'll have someone else to obsess over.

I very much agree. I'm a fan of longer hair myself, and who doesn't like blondes? They intentionally dressed her down and made her look plain jane in the film, but there was still something about her that just blew me away. Quite a stunning woman imho.

The joke was on him as Brosnan played Bond three more times.

This might sound like me, but it wasn't. Bravo to that man, whoever you are. I'm surprised it wasn't the fan that was dragged away. "And i'll tell you something else..."

I remember the Dalton fans in 95. Heck even in 97. They had no leg to stand on. I feel sorry for them now but they had lost the argument. Bond was back again, Bond was cool again and Dalton was NOT missed.

Brozza certainly left with his tail between his legs, that's for sure.

Has any of the actors left on a high though? Craig is hoping that's what will happen for him but we will have to wait and see.
