Old man Whiskey. Have you ever seen such BLACK death eyes on a cat??
He reminds me of Michael Myers

Good looking cat there, @Master_Dahark. He's more of a lion with that mane. :)
That's so great! Thanks for sharing, @Master_Dahark. How lovely to give a home to an older animal.
That's awesome to hear. My parents have rescued many an abandoned cat over the years, recovered them to full health and provided them with a great home. If only more people were like that.

Was this originally titled show a picture of your cat? If not, where are all the dog people? Maybe this will mix things up a bit!

Oh these dogs are adorable! And great photos. :)
I have a big golden brown mutt but no photo on the computer; I'll try to rectify that so I can post one sometime soon.

He was only with us since January but I will miss him terribly. He was pretty old and had a lot of health problems (and a knack for eating things he shouldn't) and when he got super sick all of a sudden we of course took him to the vet. I just feel so guilty because might have lived if we could afford the complex surgery he needed. I guess I'm taking it pretty hard because I've had a pet need to be euthanised before, but it was when I lived with my parents and completely out of my hands. Now it just feels like I killed him.

    RIP Whisk-- I'll miss you

Oh, I am so sorry for your loss of Whiskey, Master_Dahark . I am sure he was so special and had a very good life with you. You had taken him in when he was old, and that is so kind.

I don't want to just say things that just sound like only cliched nice things, because I actually really mean what I am saying. And I speak from experience. I haved loved animals and had pets all of my life. I have had to have pets euthanised before, a few times in the course of my life (I am far older than you) and it is never easy. But it is peaceful, and painless, for the animal. Surely Whiskey felt very loved and cared for by you and that would have been his overwhelming feelings. He did not feel well at all and here you were holding him and loving him, and then he was given medication and went to sleep. We cannot always afford expensive surgery for pets. And you did not let him suffer, which is what not doing anything would most likely have led to; you spared him that. Which is no small thing, believe me.

It seems to me you provided Whiskey with a great life with you and you were able to give him all that was important, including a loving, calm farewell. I hope you find comfort in the days ahead. You took such loving care of him, truly.

I'm sorry to hear of your pet's death, @Master_Dahark, and you have no reason to feel the least bit guilty. You made the caring choice not to prolong his suffering when his health was declining and troubling him. You gave the animal a good life and made sure that he was surrounded by people that loved and cared for him at every moment of the day, which is the best thing anyone could ever give their pet. If more owners were like you we'd have less pets abandoned and left for death. And what a tender world that would be. :)>-
  • Thanks guys- it does feel good to vent. On the one hand I felt like a dork for writing about this on a forum but the reality is it just goes to show what a good crew we have here at mi6community.

I had to go to work that night we put him to sleep and I haven't really been able to sit down and grieve yet. My girlfriend begged me to stay home but, well, putting it bluntly, the State Police (at least in the town I work) are a 'macho' bunch. You know the type- they all have 3+ dogs, and go hunting every weekend. So suffice to say calling out of work because 'my cat died' was something I'd never live down, lol.
I just bottled it up these past two days, which I'm sure isn't healthy. That night one of the guys did mention 'hey Lee, you're awful quiet tonight' so I said, you know, 'yeah I had to put my cat to sleep today' and he was just like 'Oh.' and went back to typing.

I'm getting more used to him not being here and I'm sure it'll only get easier from here on out. It's funny, I will be reminded of him every time I eat because he'd always be hovering over my shoulder trying to swipe whatever it was out of my hand :D

I hope my other cat knows that he's now obligated to live forever, lol

I've had to let go of two pets the same way, and both times I felt the same way, like I killed them.
But it really isn't like that. And if you never loved your furry pal, an erroneous feeling like that would never enter your mind at all. There's no good about goodbye, to keep it Bondian....

    And so it goes.

It's very important to catch the red slide leading to the Arkhangelsk chemical facility. Alex, who I would trust with my life will be waiting there. If I miss, I could be impaled be one of those tall white spike things. I could also land in the snow surrounding the entrance. Lovely brown mountains surrounding the facility. OK, here's goes nothing.

@Master_Dahark my sympathy to you in the loss of your cat. Never an easy thing losing pet.

I needed to agree to the euthanisation for Harvey, pictured some posts further up from here, back in September due to him contracting Septicemia, a truly awful condition and something I never ever want to experience again. Basically all the innards get attacked and start to break down from acute blood poisoning even where the dog, in Harv's case a very fit 7 year old, is a fully active healthy animal. At the age I lost him, it really was well before his time but the vets couldn't save him even where I told them to throw everything they could (expensively...) into the attempt. The wailing of pain as I took him to the vets will live with me forever as it was truly harrowing.

I can really empathise with your loss of Whiskey @Master_Dahark, it's truly a gut wrench and does feel like losing a limb along with the spring in your step. Non animal people just don't understand but those that are will instantly be taken to a similar scenario of a loss they have endured in their past.

The only way to move on to try and mitigate the grief is to direct energies into the remaining pets you have in the family and/or adopt another. Harvey had a buddy living with him, Henry, who pined as badly as I and my family did so we urgently sought another pedigree boxer. The breeder for Henry heard of the loss and offered one of her own kennel of 14 dogs that she used to show in top competitions - she is at an age where she cannot maintain her dog show routines and her show judging and was considering retirement so the timing to thin the kennels suited her and me and she volunteered - I didn't ask.

The new pup will never be a replacement for Harv but brings life back into us all and Henry so I maintain the happy balance but with a slightly heavier heart. I would prefer the total unconditional love and devotion of a happy dog than none at all so will always keep one or more even where there is heartache waiting in the future. The new arrival. Ike is now the 8th boxer dog.

@Kerim, Upload the image to a photo sharing website like imgur or facebook even then once it's uploaded to the site, drag the picture in the URL bar and take the link and drop it between the IMG's brackets. Removing the spaces of course. [ img ] [ /img ]
