You don't get Bond's respect, you earn it.

Absolutely which is why I cant accept bond giving respect to a spotty teenage whizz kid :)
He very rarely respected people he met or was assigned with either. Goodnight and Pussy Galore being good examples, Pussy had to earn the respect.

My problem is the young Q. Bond has respect for authority. He respects all the characters of authority throughout all books/movies whether they be good or a villian. For bond to respect a teenager in the world he lives in is impossible imo.
I take your point that this is a new world with high tech gadgetry so maybe the only bond that can be made for the big screen in this day and age is in fact not bond at all?
I know we have heard this said many times before but this time I think it is true.
Why did the reboot of bond in Casino Royale have to be set now anyway? I always thought they would have been wiser to set it in the same era as the Connery bonds.

    I must say I disagree.

A young Q works because only a young Q can stand the otherwise inevitable comparison to Desmond Llewelyn. Whishaw looks young, though he is 32, but I fail to see how that could keep Bond from respecting him. Bond's bedded, and respected, women that are younger (like Vesper). Also, he does make the point first of this Q being a bit young. The exciting part is that Q earns Bond's respect, which puts them on a far more interesting basis, IMO, for future films. I suppose this actor might furthermore survive this Bond. Give him his number of films to become seasoned. If they still make Bond films in 20 years, we'll be happy to have the familiar faces of Whishaw (and Fiennes?) around I reckon.

Also, putting this 'reboot' (the term is debatable) in modern times makes all the sense in the world. The big appeal of the Bond movies for most people has always been the fact that they evolved with us, that the five-minutes-into-future remained exactly that. Like my parents were captivated by Bond in the 60s, dreaming they were (with) that guy in modern 60s, so was I in the 'modern' 80s, so are my pupils in the modern world of today. Anyone who wants to see Bond in the cold war should watch FRWL. Meanwhile, new generations of fans gladly accept the Bond of the new ages.

    Very eloquent @DarthDimi, as always.
  • Hello Darthdimi
Again I respect your opinion but I beg to differ.
Vesper was not respected by bond at the beginning, he BEGAN to respect her when she gave a harsh but true telling of his life story on the train. Again you have to earn it as CHRISISALL said.
You talk about the inevitable comparisons between Q being some kind of a problem? What about the inevitable comparisons between every Bond we have seen? that didnt seem to cause any problems, did it?
Lastly your point about how bond has evolved with us is totally spot on, but then why the need for a reboot at all?? He has died and been reborn not really evolving is it?

Q is obviously younger than Bond but he's not a teenager. Also, Q is heading up a department where his staff are noticeably of varying ages, some even older than he is. One isn't put in such a position if they don't have the slippages to back ut up. Also, the scenes where Q is telling Bond about the fail-safe protocols that Silva used to protect his computer and how it was Q himself who invented such a security system is an example that proves this young Q is nit only highly skilled but a legitimate asset to Bond and tge little smile Bond gives him is an example of respect and appreciation for Q's abilities.
This isn't about catering to a younger audience, it's about taking old characters and breathing new life into them, altering the dynamic to fit comfortably within tge contemporary times we live in, especially as Bond is a contemporary character which is why you will never see a cinematic period piece Bond film.

Vesper surmising Bond's story on the train was mere moments after they first met. In between that time, it's fair to say that neither one of them respected each other. Vesper wasnt taking him seriously at all, which Bond picked up on and made it known to her (the under current of sarcasm) comment. I'd go as far as to say Bond respected Vesper long before she ended up respecting him.
  • Yeah but we are talking about bond respecting people not vesper :)

And yet you think it a better film than SF?

Sorry, but you deserve the insult..... <:-P
  • I do rate DAD higher than SF so you can tell how lowly I rate this film.
Moneypenny an agent in the field...........come on!!

Not for that long. And I love the whole "field work isn't for everyone" row she and Bond have.
  • Each to their own I suppose.
Just don't like being insulted, especially when it comes to bond.
Watchin World is not enough on sky. Just watched Q disappear down the hatch.......:(
    Nice talking to you all.
  • Skyfall is defiantly a second tier Bond and I really hope Craig makes a formula Bond next tired of the back story reboots.

Meanwhile, run along now and stick to watching DAD and Indy 4.

Anyone who rates DAD above SF isn't a true Bond fan in my book.

I hope that insults you fully.

  • LOL jet set willy
You couldnt even lace my shoes when it comes to bond.
Bond ended with Dalton EVERY true fan knows this. No insult meant to Brosnan as I love Goldeneye.
For interests sake what are your top 5 movies and top 5 books?
Then I can tell what kinda bond fan you are
  • DAD is far more a Bond film than Skyfall is. Skyfall is a better film but not a better Bond film. And Jet post something positive about something and maybe I can take your trolling a bit more seriously.

OHMSS, CR, FRWL, LTK, GF and SF are my favourite Bond movies.

OHMSS, TMWTGG and MR are my favourite novels. I own all the original Fleming 50's editions, and the 60's Pan editions, own plenty of merchandise and attended Cubby's memorial in Leicester Square.

So tell me hot shot. What are your favourite films and novels, and what makes you think you know your Bond better than me.

SF is a better film/Bond film. That's just a fact.

We really feel the atmosphere of each and every location in SF - far more than in DAD. The film places us IN Shanghai and it feels like we are in more than just a studio with a backdrop.

The characters. Both the villain and the girl Servine have something resembling a backstory. This was a key trait in the books. What is Jinx's backstory? Errr....

I could go on but I'm not going to.

BAIN, I wouldn't respond anymore to the 2 morons above, who I'm fairly sure are the same person, who's just come on here to do a few rounds of good old-fashioned trolling.
  • favorite Bond films
OHMSS, Casino Royale, Live and Let Die, Tomorrow Never Dies, GoldenEye

    Books
Casino Royale, Moonraker, Colonel Sun, and Dr No are my favorite books but I like the Matt Helm books better

As for Skyfall I really think Craig's first to films were better.
  • You see jet set willy I always ask that same question of new bond fans that I get into debates with.
It would be impossible for me to give a top 5 in bond movies. I love almost all of them what I can tell you are Bonds I dont rate
    QOS
    DAD
    TND
    SF
How any true Bond fan could give a top 5 and so quickly as well is beyond me.

Can't argue with your first 3 movies - as for the last 2, this is starting to give me a better picture of you as a Bond fan.

If you think CS and the Matt Helm books are better than anything Fleming ever wrote, this is giving me a clearer picture still. No wonder you don't like SF.

I've known my top 5 for years, although admittedly both CR and SF are new welcome editons.

By the looks of things, I'm guessing most things in life are beyond you.

  • Have you read the Matt Helm books Jet?

I will admit it was easy doing a bottom five than top five but OHMSS is a no brainer and Live And Let Die is the first Bond I saw

    as for my bottom Bond
View to A kill is my least favorite with The World is not Enough a very close second

Ok, Baronsamedi76. At least your least favourites are decent choices too, although DAD wouldn't go amiss.
