Timothy Dalton. For me, the best Bond ever.

Well, Craig is the current Bond, so that will go some way to his high ranking. I remember Brosnan constantly hailed as the best since Connery in the late 1990's (so keep that in mind).
When the 7th actor has made his 3rd or 4th film, and he is the focus of attention, only then we will see what the public thinks of Craig. Will he retain the 2nd best slot he seems to get now, or will he slip down? We'll see...

    Very true @MajorDSmythe.

I remember those comparisons of Brosnan to Connery......ludicrous when you think about it now in retrospect.

For some of us it felt ludicrous back then too but yes the current incumbent of the role will always feature highly.

Craig's legacy need not so much be judged by how close he comes to Connery but whether he is 'up there' with Connery AND Moore or looked as one of the others like Dalton and yes even Craig.

Dalton was such a breathe of fresh air in TLD and felt real and yet Craig came along in CR and brought another depth to the character even still. I still can't decide on whom I prefer but I was relieved to get Craig after Brosnan and get us back to what we lost after LTK.

After going through the films this past few weeks, it remains Dalton by a country mile. In two films he left such a favourable impression to Craig's four. Or five. Or six.

When i first answered i said Dalton without thinking for a second but freaking Spectre now made me highly indecisive.

Like hard core Craig fans say he( Daniel) looks more cinematic , more appropriate for the big screen and more threatening and bad ass than Dalton but Timothy Dalton has more balance in his portrayal.

He can be charming when it's needed and Though when the times call for and his looks are more fitted for the classic bond : Lean dark hair and classicaly handsome.

For me Dalton, everyone mentions that Craig brought the films back to being serious, but Dalton did that to, and had enormous respect for the character re-reading the Fleming books. It is a great shame he only made two (pretty damn good) films, had he made four or five I'm sure he would have been more positively remembered in the role.

I enjoyed Dalton's take on Bond more, but if it comes down to critical reception and superior acting, it's Craig, hands down. Craig takes quality of films, too, but mostly because he benefited from good writing, strong supporting casts and good music. That wasn't always the case for Dalton (supporting casts were an issue in both of his outings, IMO).

As I said, though, I enjoyed Dalton as Bond more simply because he at least retained some of the classic elements from Connery and Moore. Apparently that'll be the case in Spectre as well.

For me, after Spectre, it's a crystal clear case of
    Daniel Dalton
    and Timothy Craig B-)

    I don't agree at all.

For me, the best acting job in a Bond film is Timothy Dalton in Licence to Kill. Followed by Diana Rigg in OHMSS and Eva Green in Casino Royale.

Robert Shaw is the best acting job in any Bond film. That's a fact!! ;)

I'm mixed on Dalton in LTK. His best moment is outside Felix's house, but I just feel he's too over-dramatic at other times.

I agree but thanks to forum members here I do have a greater appreciation for Dalton.

I wish Dalton had had better material and a better director to work with. But reading Vargr it's hard not to image a 40ish Dalton in the role.

Warren Ellis in an interview explained his take on Bond that Bond is emotionally limited. Only tears Bond should ever have is for his wife.

The rejudging the reactions of both Dalton and Craig is certain scenes kinda puts me at a draw. Craig certainly has had far better material and direction than Dalton ever dreamed of so that puts Dalton at a serious disadvantage.

But Craig should have never cried at M's death that was much too sentimental and tidy. I even thought that then.

Likewise Dalton"s reactions in some scenes like the bar fight in LTK was just wrong. Should have been stone cold.

So now im mixed ...enjoy both but prefer Craig's films way more ...well 3 out of four og them :P

Bond should only cry over his wife, and his best friend. I think his loyalty to Leiter is what makes LTK so special. Bond can't act objectively because he's on a revenge quest. He makes some seriously ill-advised calls and reacts too emotional at times, it adds however to the human character that surfaces due to the fact that he's now not working for MI6 but seeking justice for his best friend (and his wife).

Crying over M is not at all appropriate. For Leiter though it definitely is.

I dont see that out of place that he cried for M's death since this M was more like a mother to him amd they had a growing relationship.

From hating each other in Goldeneye to completley beliving in him and finally telling Bond he was one of his best agents.
now if we go by the theory that Goldenye's M is a different character, i still have a point

In casino Royale she first tells him i knew it was too early to promote you and latter in Goldeneye supports him and gives him back his 00 status even though he didnt past the test.

You're absolutely correct that only when the next actor has made a few can we truly know where DC will rank in the pantheon. I personally think at that time his run will be seen as polarizing. Some will love it, and some will hate it. Having said that, he will always be highly regarded for CR & for bringing the series back to a grounded footing after it jumped the shark with Brosnan's last few.

Aren't all except connery polarizing ??
Connery is the only one i haven't heard any dislike for him meanwhile all the other 5 have their fare share of fans and haters. Especially: Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig since they are known by a bigger number of people.

Only Bond fans know and Love Dalton and Lazenby.
Actually you know if someone is a real Bond fan if thry know these two. Otherwise they only know the franchise by surface

Bond cried more than once in the books. What s the deal? Crying is human.

When did he actually full-on cry in the books? I can't remember. He was described as a physical and emotional wreck in YOLT but I can't remember him weeping.

After Bond and Solitaire had just survived the keel-hauling. Can't remember if Bond cried at Honey dousing him down with merthiolate at the end of their adventure.

    Anyway, what a wuss.

  • Tim Dalton is a good Bond, especially in his time and place after inheriting the role from Moore and the subsequent tonal change in the series, or at least the attempt at it, but Craig is a much tougher and therefore more effective Bond, in my opinion.
