After the pic thread got derailed, I decided to make this. This is a thread talking about past Bond references in SF, and if you think there are any. You shoud watch the trailer before entering this thread, warning you now.

Here are some from the trailer, thanks to @FromCanadaWithLove and @JWESTBROOK

M writing Bond's obituary - Tomorrow Never Dies (Carver writing Bond's)
Bond Dies - You Only Live Twice
Explosion at MI6 HQ - The World Is Not Enough
Scorpion - Diamonds Are Forever
To Q, "You must be joking" - Goldfinger
DB5 - Goldfinger
Bond being issued PPK - Dr. No
Palm reading gun - Licence to Kill
"Be careful of what you wish for" - Quantum of Solace (Greene says the same line)
Bond, tied to a chair, with Silva - Casino Royale (torture scene)
Silva next to fallen statue - GoldenEye
Train top fight - Octopussy
Shower sex scene - AVTAK (right?)
Secluded villain's island - Dr. No / TMWTGG
Scotland locations w/ Helicopter - FRWL
Stag statue - Thunderball

    In my honest opinion:

    M writing Bond's obituary - NOT A REFERENCE
Bond Dies - NOT A REFERENCE
Explosion at MI6 HQ - NOT A REFERENCE
    Scorpion - NOT A REFERENCE
To Q, "You must be joking" - Reference to Goldfinger.
DB5 - A reference to many previous Bond films, not specifically to Goldfinger.
Bond being issued PPK - Maybe a reference to Dr. No.
Palm reading gun - NOT A REFERENCE
"Be careful of what you wish for" - NOT A REFERENCE
Bond, tied to a chair, with Silva - NOT A REFERENCE
Silva next to fallen statue - NOT A REFERENCE
Train top fight - NOT A REFERENCE
Shower sex scene - NOT A REFERENCE
    Secluded villain's island - NOT A REFERENCE
Scotland locations w/ Helicopter - NOT A REFERENCE
Stag statue - NOT A REFERENCE

Palm reading gun - NOT A REFERENCE

How on earth can it not be a reference ? How more in-your-face can you be about LTK than having another palm reading gun ? That's a bit of an extreme claim...

@royale - you yourself admitted, the photo thread got over the top and now you find its a good idea to open an own THREAD? I hope, they gonna lock this right away. Its like inviting trouble again just for the heck of it. If I wasn't a Lady, i would say WTF!!
You could have optioned to just pm with DC and all was good.

You say that *after* an moderator suggested to open this thread ? So I guess you are saying the mods are the ones in the wrong here ?
If you want to talk references in Skyfall, I suggest we make a thread for it and go back to this one being about pictures.

Why would the mod team close a thread after they suggested such a thread to be opened ?

The palm reading thingy from LTK might have consciously or subconsciously inspired the writers but that doesn't make it a reference.

It would be a reference if they included it in the screenplay so that Bond fans can point at it and say 'hey, it's from LTK'. I seriously doubt this is the case.

He is a mod? New to me. Doesn't make it a better idea, but at least gets it out of other peoples faces. That is true - I admit to that.

I agree about the gun - how that is not a reference is beyond me. Of course it.

I'm more interested in the fact that SKYFALL is all one big 50th anniversary present back to the fans...DC007, do you think Eon have done the decent thing?

I suppose the blonde hair on our evil queen villan is a Grant thing.
We do have a bike chase ala TND.
Big hole in MI6 is TWINE.

I love this thread idea and we should keep it open to both ladies and gentlemen.

Anyway ship ahoy at the cycling...come on GB stuff it to the French.

    GB win a gold yes!

Makes up for Vikki being chucked out.

I suggested this thread be opened because I believe there is a genuine interest and an ongoing discussion to be had from this topic. As Skyfall is released, there will no doubt be even more eagle eyed fans picking up references, so, as far as I'm concerned, this is a valid thread.

Additionally, the Skyfall photo thread was getting seriously derailed. (Just a reminder that derailing a thread is not encouraged here and can lead to a warning.) So, rather than edit the thread and send out friendly warnings to a bunch of people, I thought it would be better to have this thread created.

I hope that clears that up.

@Germanlady The photo thread got derailed, so thanks to the suggestion of A MOD, I made a thread where people could talk about the references in SF, and so people who didn't want to discuss them, like you, wouldn't have it thrown in their faces on a thread that had nothing to do with it.

And I don't see why this should be locked, which would stop the rest of us from discussing it, just because 1 or 2 people had an argument over the topic on a different thread. I was actually trying to help, but hey, if you want to have a go at me for stirring up trouble you go ahead.
Palm reading gun - NOT A REFERENCE

Most of what you posted could be right, but this I thought was obviously a reference to LTK.

GL (nice short name ;) ) I think locking this jues because some people can't control themselves is ignoring the problem. locking the people would solve the problem, though.

    Anyway:
M writing Bond's obituary - Tomorrow Never Dies (Carver writing Bond's) not M, so no reference.
Bond Dies - You Only Live Twice. Bond dying was a plan in YOLT, in skyfall it isn't, so no reference.
Explosion at MI6 HQ - The World Is Not Enough this might be, altough really thin.
Scorpion - Diamonds Are Forever part of the drinking game, so definately no reference.
To Q, "You must be joking" - Goldfinger This is a school example of a reference.
DB5 - Goldfinger Same as above.
Bond being issued PPK - Dr. No. Don't know for sure, if it's replacing his current gun, maybe.
Palm reading gun - Licence to Kill Definately.
"Be careful of what you wish for" - Quantum of Solace. Just script overlapping. In this logic, "Bond, James Bond" should be a reference too.
Bond, tied to a chair, with Silva - Casino Royale. Definately not.
Silva next to fallen statue - GoldenEye. Thin, but I'll count it in.
Train top fight - Octopussy This is a big one.
Shower sex scene - AVTAK. No.
Secluded villain's island - Dr. No / TMWTGG. Not really.
Scotland locations w/ Helicopter - FRWL. Very thin.
Stag statue - Thunderball Unless he flies over it or mentions it, no reference.

@forgotmyusername Yes, it seems EON have finally made a big present to the fans. After the muck-up of the 40th anniversary, with excessive in-your-face references... it seems for the 50th anniversary, EON have made subtle references that only us Bond fans can pick up.

Doesn't anyone think that the obituary might be a reference to Fleming's You Only Live Twice? You know, where there's a massive obituary from M in The Times? Or doesn't anyone read the books anymore?

Also, between the end of YOLT and TMWTGG books Bond is missing, presumed dead.

As I said in the previous thread, I think the real question is not if they are references (the fact that can be identified, makes them a reference) but if they are deliberately and consciously placed there.

Sadly I haven't read all the Bond books. I'm reading YOLT once I've finished OHMSS. But it sounds like it could be a reference though.

That's true. Maybe some of them are references, just put in accidentally.

    Fantastic...spot on.

Bond disappearing for a few months...maybe finding true love...marriage? OHMSS ref, it could be...

Cheers, mate. I do like my snaps.

Yup, @Germanlady, I've been a member of this and the previous forum for over seven years and have been a mod since the last forum.

On topic, I think there will be some literary references, too. Both Craig and Mendes have spoken about how they went back and looked at the books for Skyfall, so I'd be surprised if we don't see something come out of those discussions.

@forgotmyusername I don't think he'll get married, from what I saw in the trailer seems like he spent his time being "dead" just enjoying himself, getting pissed, etc. Probably got laid lots though.

Between YOLT and TMWTGG Bond was presumed dead, but in fact was in Vladivostok, where he was brainwashed by the Russians into assassinating M when he returned.

When I saw the Skyfall teaser with Bond being "assessed" with his word association, I immediately thought of this. Perhaps there's a reference in that?

I'm really not too keen on this past reference stuff. it has only really been ten years yet two bond films later and this is happening again. hmm. with the 007legends game coming i fell like i dont really want a film wasted on looking back or something stupid like little nellie showing up. cringe worthy like that Olympics sketch.

Cos I like my avatar just the way it is. ;) However, I might get the logo to avoid this sort of confusion in the future.

On topic, which other films has Bond shooting his cuffs like that?

That reminds me of PB'S tie wiggle in the now classic city Tank chase.
  • edited August 2012 Posts: 12,837
Yeah I thought of the tie straightening in the tank chase too, when he did the cuff thing in the trailer, not sure if it's a reference or not though. Also he straightens his tie in the TWINE boat chase. I like that, when Bond stops and does something little but cool and Bondanian in the middle of an action sequence.

Brosnan adjusts his tie in the GE tank chase, as well, not his cuffs.

do you think the tank was originally meant to blow part of the train appart in goldeneye, i head that stunt was taken from the original goldeneye script, btw if anyone knows where i can pick that up i would enjoy giving it a read

It seems like such a Bondian thing to do, like Sean putting the flower in his lapel as he rides the elevator in DAF, but I can't seem to recall when Bond shot his cuffs. He must have done it at some point and in a fairly obvious way...

Some of those references are really stretching it beyond logic. Like Bond tied to a chair? C'mon, if that's all it takes to be a "reference" it could just as easily be a shout out to Mission Impossible III. Something that simple and basic (good guy being restrained to chair by bad buy) happens in about 90% of spy films.
