    What. The. Fuck.

^ These were the only three words I could muster up while sitting in my car after seeing Suicide Squad.

It hate to say it, but this is a bad film. It is a mess. I struggle to find anything good to say about it. I guess I liked some of the characters... that's about the extent of the positive stuff I have to say.

This film was just so poorly made. The plot was dull. The the villain was forgettable. The editing was choppy. The style was immature. The soundtrack stupid and it stomped all over the scenes. The action is messy and forgettable.

But what I hated the most is the film just did not let these characters talk, interact, and develop. This movie did not breathe. Some of my most anticipated scenes from the trailers were reduced to choppy little acid trips or little spastic flashbacks. I so badly wanted to see Dr. Quinzel and the Joker sit across a table from each other and just give us some compelling dialogue. They don't get to do that, no one gets to do that. The characters are just rushed onto the screen and thrown into the action (if that's what you want to call it).

This can't be the film that David Ayer wanted to make. Ayer is better than this. The studio has to have had a hand in this.

I see a lot of people saying this is the best of the 3 DCEU films so far. IMO, this is undoubtedly the worst.

Good lord. You are essentially saying what Grace Randolph did. That's a shame about the lack of character development, when that's mainly what the trailers showed off. If you don't have character, you've got nothing. And apparently there's no story to speak of either. Must be an empty/hollow film.

I've wanted to go to the movies lately, and am trying to pick between seeing Jason Bourne and this. Their reception doesn't instill me with confidence, though. I think I'd enjoy Bourne more, but at the same time I feel like I have to see SS for myself, as its reception will lead to big changes in WB's approach with the DCEU, and I want to be informed about what went wrong, and see it for myself.

    Decisions, decisions.

The gf and I are literally in line buying snacks before going in to take our seats and on our way here, we listened to double toasted's audio review. It's a long review but wonderfully hilarious...my sides ache from too much laughter. I'm switching my brain off for this one.

    Saw the film...

    Uuumm.....I wasn't bored.

There are a few good moments in this film but nearly not enough. So much was cut out and ultimately, I didn't feel anything for this film. They turned joker into a simp. His relationship with HQ was just no. Joker showed more potential in the Rick Ross music video, purple Lamborghini than he did in this film. Margot Robbie was alright as HQ but something about her just felt forced. Viola Davis was the best thing about this film. Will Smith was being Will Smith and had some badass moments but everyone else was just ornamental. A complete waste for the most part. The pacing and editing was off, the music became intrusive, the film lacked sincerity in what it was trying to achieve and the film just felt somewhat incomplete...and don't get me started on Enchantress. Wtf? People are better off watching Batman: Assault on Arkham.

SS should do moderately good business and I think people will have fun with it but the film itself is meh at best for me. I lowered my expectations for this but even then, the film still disappoints.

    I give it 4/10

A more optimistic review from my friend Stephen Porzio for Film Ireland. It might be worth noting that he labelled BvS as one of the worst films he's seen in the last five years.

I just got back from the theatre. Let me start by saying I know little about the comic characters themselves (except the Joker), and so saw the film with little expectation of how they would/should be portrayed.

It's a lot of fun, as some others have noted. Lots of action, plenty of jokes (that don't fall flat) and an overall good time. There's not an ounce of pretension here at all, so if that's what you want, you'll be disappointed.

In terms of 'comic book' entries, it's most reminiscent of Batman Forever (1995) for me. The Joker is almost Riddler like (although as others have said, he is a bit player here). Leto's characterization (one of the few characters which, as I said, I was familiar with going in) is subpar and rather forgettable, I'm afraid to say. The worst of the on screen versions by some large margin. However, he fits right into this universe - more so than Batman did in BvS.

In terms of comparing to anything else, I'd say it has a little bit of Ghostbusters (1984) in it, and a little bit of Resident Evil Apocalypse (2004).

Smith's Deadshot is charismatic, as is Robbie's Quinn (just like in the trailers). Courtney's Boomerang is serviceable and Kinnaman's Flag is impressive as is Karen Fukuhara as Katana (shades of Sin City's Miho).

I actually enjoyed it more than BvS because it doesn't try to be what it's clearly not. It knows what it wants to be, and is consistent in its delivery throughout. Definitely kiddie fare.

Oh my - sorry members - a dumb movie for dumb people. Studios are treating us like cash cows. Cutting the movie to make it easier to run more viewing in the day. Then leak that there is an extended edition with the bits from the trailer that aren't in the movie.

Sound familiar? Did they know China wasn't going to run it, so to make up the money with streaming and blu-ray sales.

Never ever going to watch a DCU film at the flix. We are being cheated people, cheated.

From Reddit: A list of things that were chopped out from the movie. It's clear WB were worried that people wouldn't take to the characters if they were portrayed as actually being villainous. They cut out Joker's scenes to make him more affectionate and loving to Harley, bastardizing the character into making him a simp, while also undercutting Harley's character. They cut out any bits of sexism from Boomerang, and one of the things on Slipknot's rap sheet is that he's a rapist which was also cut out.

The list below of things they cut out is long and I understand why they cut out some of the things but it makes one wonder why bother doing this film at all in the tone they've gone for and with the never ending reminder that the squad are "bad guys" if they're going to approach these villains in such an insincere and limp way. It's frustrating. Why are WB such pussies?
"In early cuts, the movie's opening detailed June Moon's possession by Enchantress in real tome. Reshoots reshuffled the scene to be later in the movie in flashback form in favour of a new opening centred on Deadshot."

"Deadshot in the prison cell, watching the rain fall and thinking about his daughter."

"El Diablo observing the flame of a lit match, before putting it out due to his vow to no longer use his powers."

"El Diablo being escorted to a training centre by being placed in a tube that fills with water to quell his flames, and then unceremoniously dropped onto the ground."

"Early interviews showed Captain Boomerang's racism and sexism, but the movie is light on examples of such behaviour, which have apparently been deleted. Most of them were reportedly directed at Katana, to whom Boomerang is attracted to."

"Early reports indicated more backstory for Killer Croc, revealing that he entire life as a social outcast due to his physical appearance and has convinced himself that he is beautiful in his own way. Croc crossed paths with Batman while working as muscle-for-hire for numerous Gotham's crime bosses, while secretly planning to take over one day. There were also scenes displaying his affinity for making sculptures out of discarded materials. Aside from jokes about Croc viewing himself as 'beautiful,' one of these were retained in the final cut."

"Also deleted was a scene where he becomes sick at the helicopter escort to Midway City, throws up half-digested pieces of goat, and then eats them again, disgusting the nearby Navy Seals."

"Early cuts reportedly included a passing reference to Slipknot being serial rapist, likely to further paint him as unsympathetic to the audience ahead of his own death."

"More scenes of Rick Flag and June Moon's romantic relationship, including him reading the files of the Suicide Squad recruits after Waller delivers them to him."

"Another scene where Flag and Moon are out on a date."

"Extended scene of Joker interrogating Captain Griggs, including the line, "I can't wait to show you my toys," which was in every trailer, but was removed from the movie."

"Joker and his men escaping after shooting up a restaurant. Harley, who is already affiliated with the Joker, follows them on a motorcycle and intercepts their car. Joker bangs his head against the glass in frustration."

"Joker and Harley then get into a fight, which ends with Harley pointing a gun at Joker's head. Joker sweet-talks Harley into lowering the gun, charming her, then backhands her across the face. Afterwards he sweet-talks her again and they kiss."

"Extended Ace Chemicals scene where Harley jumps into the chemicals. More bits of dialogue from Joker."

"Extended Batmobile chase scene with more interaction between Joker and Harley. One of the examples, presented in all the trailers, is the Joker punching the roof of his car."

"Harley using her baseball bat as a mock gun to play shoot at invisible foes."

"Extended scene of Joker breaking into the nanobomb manufacture facility to arrange for Harley's neck-bomb to be disabled."

"More interactions between Harley and Boomerang. Early cuts apparently included her really disliking him despite growing affectionate to all the other members of the squad."

"Extended bar scene with Harley taking everyone's orders. Deadshot calls for a shot, Katana wants whiskey, Croc and Boomerang settle for beer, Harley asks Diablo wants and he prefers water which she jokes, "is a good idea." The scene was featured in the trailers, but in the movie it cuts directly to Deadshot's speech about them all almost pulling the mission off."

"Removed several scenes with the Joker to repaint his relationship with Harley as more loving rather than abusive."

"Joker and Harley get into an argument after he rescues her in the hijacked helicopter. In early cuts he reportedly pushes her out to kill her, then the helicopter gets shot down. This was apparently reworked into the helicopter getting shot down first and Joker pushing her out to save her."

"Joker returns during the final battle in the subway station, face half-burnt from the helicopter crash, which apparently leads to a brief altercation with the Squad. He calls for Harley to escape with him but she refuses for once in order to help her friends, and the Joker escapes after throwing a live grenade at the group to cover his own escape."

I guess we saw a different movie.

I mean everything critics said about the DC movis can be applied for Civil War as well.

    -the villain sucked
The villain of Civil War is barely in it, and his plan relies on "oh well i hope they end up fighting and they won't realize it's stupid"

-The reason for figting is stupid
The reason for the fight in CIvil War is stupid. They could've easily set their differences apart by not fighting.

-They try to compete with Marvel and they changed things for it
Oh...you mean like Captain America 3 became: Captain america feat. every single super hero ever so Marvel can compete with BvS?

-The humanizing of Superman was done poorly
Just like "Bucky....remember! Please.....I was your friend" was done poorly in TWS? ANd just like that a brainwashing 20 years in the making is cured! Who would've thought!

I can go on and on.

I am starting to thing that some of the critics are biased. And since psychology works miracles if 10 people tell you "this is bad" you'll see only bad in it or you'll say you hate sicne you want to be part of the smart/cool guys.

And I am not saying Civil War was bad. It was great. It was the best movie of the year so far. It was surely better than Suicide Squad.

But I honestly can't see how the critics don't keep the same "standard" for both brands.

But in the end I don't care about other people opinions. Art is subjective. 99% of the people can say something is shit but that doesn't make a painting, a song or a movie shit. It's subjective. Sometimes I'm in the majority and sometimes I'm in the minority and so be it.

    :)

P.S. Since we're in a Bond forum I want to say that I kinda liked this movie better than SPECTRE. Squad had editting problems and Spectre had plot problems but the main reason for me loving SS more than SP was the reason that Squad didn't have a character named Joseph Murphy saying "I am no longer Joseph now I'll use my maiden name Joker. Oh and also I was born as Joseph Wayne so Bruce is my brother lol" :D

I'm sorry if this seemed like ranting I just wanted to write couple of things, it's all in good spirit, it's not end of the world if we're on the wrong page :)

A lot of this missing material stuck out like a sore thumb. It's one of the reasons I look forward to a potential extended cut for SS moreso than I did for BvS.

I find it amazing that a lot of this stuff was cut after featuring so heavily in the promotional material. Leto's Joker, while fine, would have been so much better if they hadn't butchered him.

So true. Art is indeed subjective. We like what we like and don't like what we don't like. Other opinions shouldn't have an effect on it (yet sometimes, to some extent, do).

    Movie of the year easily.

    Critics are dumb!
    What were they expecting lol?

I have been a DC fan for almost 20 years. Every character was perfect?

How else did you want to introduce these characters into the franchise and how is the plot bad? It all fit in and worked perfectly and made total sense.

Once again it's people who know nothing about the DC franchise.

    Leto way better than Ledger...
    Not even close

    lol no.

If you loved the film that's great but there's so much wrong with your post. I've been a DC fan for almost 30 years and quite frankly, this film would have been a complete washout if it wasn't for Waller, Harley and deadshot. They massacred the Joker/Harley relationship and on a basic film making level it was subpar at best. The movie also fails to convey Leto as a better joker than Ledger. Not even close.

speaking of Leto, he's clearly displeased with the end result:

He'd be right, too. I quite liked the film but if the above Reddit post is accurate and they did cut out scenes depicting the more abusive side of the relationship then that's a big no-no from me and if I was Leto I'd be super pissed. It makes all the effort (whether people appreciate his methods or not, nobody can deny he put the work in) worth a fraction of its original standing.

I still liked his Joker, though. He still has great potential. I really hope that we get some sort of dialogue scene between Joker, Harley and Deadshot in either the extended SS or a future film. That hallway scene from Assault On Arkham is great. ("You, the new guy!")

I can't recall just how many articles I saw about Leto's method acting, how "terrifying" he was and how he sent lots of crude gifts to the rest of the cast. So, after all that, they not only cut a lot of his scenes and make him "nicer," but his take on Joker doesn't even sound that great. He seems overhyped, his take on the role was my standout issue from the very beginning of production.

Having seen the film yesterday, I can only say this: Leto is not scary as the Joker. Not one bit. He is more like the Riddler from Batman Forever.

Not a patch on Heath. Now he was scary disturbing.

I think the problem is, and he alludes clearly to this, that his best work was placed on the cutting room floor. There was never a chance for him to show off his work, and that sucks because he really worked at it and went to a screw up place to play that character, just as Heath did.

Now, when the extended cut comes out, the big selling point is going to be "See Leto as Joker in XXX extra minutes," just as BvS's selling line was more story and action. Hopefully then Leto's true performance will come out.

I find it annoying if not disturbing that Warner/DC is dishing us up shortened versions of films only to be released in their "full glory" later on on BD.

    What the bloody frack...

I'm boycotting this one. Why should I go and watch a butchered movie and pay for it.

By the way, the RT rating has dropped below BvS :))

I saw it a second time tonight. This time I paid. Halfway through, the projector broke down for 15 minutes. The theatre offered me my money back.

I still enjoyed it. The lack of Joker screentime is even more obvious the second time around, though.
