Astrid Kirchherr, a Hamburg photographer who was the first to shoot professional pictures of The Beatles starting 1960, when they were playing at the Kaiserkeller and Indra, and who was a friend of Klaus Voorman's at the time, died a few days ago at the age of 81, as was revealed today. She became the girlfriend of Stuart Sutcliffe, then The Beatles' bassist, which caused him to leave the band to be with her. She was with him when he died, only 1 1/2 years later, of a brain hemorrhage. Rumour has it that she was the one that invented The Beatles' typical hairstyle, known in Germany als "Pilzkopf" (mushroom head), because she cut Stu's and later George Harrison's hair in that style.

You know when I saw that this thread had been updated, I thought for a moment about not checking to see who had died. Such is the state of the world at the moment.

Astrid Kircherr was indeed a tremendously important figure in the history of the Beatles. For those who'd never really heard of her, this: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/astrid-kirchher-beatles-photographer-dead_n_5ebf0164c5b6528854dc0717 RIP Astrid. You're with Stu now. And John, and George.

In honor of Ms. Kircherr, I think I will watch "Backbeat" (1994) on Saturday. I bought the DVD some time ago and remember it as being very good. And, of course, the always lovely Sheryl Lee played Ms. Kircherr in the movie.

    RIP Astrid. And thank you.

Rory Kinnear’s sister has sadly died from covid 19. Brain damaged from birth she was certainly in the high risk category.

Haven’t got a link at the moment.

Jorge Santana -- brother of the much more famous guitarist, Carlos Santana -- has just died. Jorge was also a guitarist, playing with the band, Malo, who had a huge hit in the 1970s with "Suavecito":

And for a much more recent taste of Malo, here they are directly from the streets of San Francisco:

RIP. Ms. George, I always looked forward to seeing your smile during the CBS pre-game show back in the 1970's.

I wholeheartedly agree. This should be mandatory reading for those who scoff and think this disease is merely the flu and a hoax and whatnot. It's a cold heart that wouldn't be moved by this.

Yes, Frank Gorshin is a big influence on me. To think he could be still alive if he hadn’t smoked 5 packs of cigarettes a day.

I recall my brother having met Frank Gorshin at a convention in the '80s and that was his impression that all he did was smoke cigarettes.

By far my favorite guest villain of the Batman '66 series, alternately crazy, funny and dangerous.

+1, I did hear that he was friendly to his fans, though. He would have been a great fit for a Roger Moore James Bond, as well. Max Zorin perhaps?

I am, quite frankly, surprised that no one has commented on this for several hours. For me, Michel Piccoli was THE French actor I would have thought about first when thinking about French actors. I was going to post a general message when I found that @DaltonCraig007 had already done so, and therefore refrained initially.
  • We the audience tend to associate the actor with the character being played. With that in mind, it's hard to "mourn" the passing of Eddie Haskell. Still, to Ken Osmond & those who knew & loved him: sorry to hear about your loss. Ken, thanks for your contribution to a great TV show. I hope the rest of your life was as successful as your time in front of the cameras.

Annie Glenn, widow of John Glenn (the first US astronaut to orbit the Earth) has died from complications related to COVID-19. An interesting story of courage in her own right, some of you may know that she was played by Mary Jo Deschanel (mother to Zooey and Emily) in 1983’s “The Right Stuff.”

Not to be political here, but some of the user comments on this yahoo story reveal the worst parts of humanity. What we are seeing here is nothing less than the death of my country.

As an Ohioan, we were especially proud the Glenns were fellow Buckeyes. Sen. Glenn was true hero and his wife was a source of his strength, a love story that was very pure. I knew a man whose wife had them in his class when they were kids. One of the highlights of my career as a journalist was I got to interview John Travolta and his guest John Glenn in the cockpit of Travolta's private plane.

I had to look at those comments and now regret it, especially since more were negative and focused on personal views than a tribute to a remarkable woman or at least respect. Multiple comments from some of the same people rehashing the same, tired views and even horrible comments about the journalist. One in particular disgusted me and I won't repeat what he said, but I don't understand how anyone could think such a thought much less write it for anyone in the world to see.
