Melvin was a major British character actor, with very unique facial features, whose career spanned nearly six decades, getting awards as soon as 1961 for his lead turn in A Taste of Honey, with his final film role in The Lost City of Z.
He played Michael Caine's friend in Alfie, made appearances in many films by his friends Ken Russell (including a more substantial part in The Devils) and Peter Medak, and was an extremely striking presence in Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, as Lady Lyndon's reverent who silently plots against her new husband.
He was also a fixture on stage and on television, being a guest star on the first episode (lost) of The Avengers.

That's sad. He was one of my favourite. At 96, you can't say this was tragic, but it's a loss nevertheless.
And thank you all for your kind words.
Wow. That was beautiful.

I found these clips featuring Harry Belafonte with the Muppets through Facebook. I hope other folks find them as endearing as I do.
And then Harry with Animal. He looks like he's having fun... and that's the way I'd like to remember him!
There would be few in the early 90's who didn't hear the crowd sprouting 'Jerry.Jerry...'
on their televisions.
