WWI seems so far away and gets perhaps dwarfed by WWII.
But we need to not forget it.
I found this moody and evocative photo on Twitter today - all that red is poppies, in remembrance of the British who died in WWI. Somehow it is lovely as well as sad for me.
Their caption is: The Tower of London pours 888,246 poppies from a window to honour WWI's British deaths. Stunning.

I did see the images of this yesterday, and I have to say it really was a sight to behold.

A Solemn occasion, but one worth celebrating, that these men and women sacrificed their lives in order to protect their respective countries. It is a shame there are no veterans of any sort left, we cannot thank them for the work they did. It was nice to observe the remembrance yesterday by lighting the one candle in the house and turning off all other lights for an hour.

I really thought perhaps the photo I posted above was Photoshopped.
But no ... I just learned by reading BBC news they are ceramic poppies that were carefully placed. I sincerely wish I could see this in person. It is an incredible sight.

In a different article, I linked to the Tower of London on the Historic Royal Palaces website (hrp.org.uk) where it discusses this artistic display. Here is a brief mention of it:

Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red
The evolving installation by ceramic artist Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper, will be unveiled on 5 August 2014; one hundred years since the first full day of Britain’s involvement in the First World War.

Entitled 'Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red', the installation is being created in the Tower’s famous dry moat. It will continue to grow throughout the summer until the moat is filled with 888,246 ceramic poppies, each poppy representing a British or Colonial military fatality during the war.

The poppies will encircle the Tower, creating not only a spectacular display, but also an inspiring setting for learning activities, as well as providing a location for personal reflection. The scale of the installation reflects the magnitude of such an important centenary, creating a powerful visual commemoration. The last poppy will symbolically be planted on 11 November 2014.

Very sad news I just stumbled upon: Marilyn Burns, from the original TCM, has passed away at her home:

Sad news to read. TCM was not an easy film to make, but both the film, and Marilyn Burns, earned their place in horror history. RIP :(

Sad news. She made me feel for her during that classic diner scene in TCM. R.I.P.

The article said she had cameos in two of the sequels? I never knew that

Neither did I until I read it in the article last night, though I didn't really pay much attention to the 2013 film. It was awful.

Yeah, the plot was an interesting concept but poorly executed

Ok, more thought could have gone into the casting of a 27 year old Alexandra Daddario as the 40 year old Heather, but I liked the idea behind the film, and I would be open to the next film taking it's cue from Texas Chainsaw 3D.

Burns was also in Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, now that is the one I wish I could forget.

Just realized that 'The Next Generation' is the one with Renee Zellwegger and Matthew McConaughey. Such a bad film. I've seen that one, the original, bits and pieces of the second one (which was very eerie), the 2003 version, the prequel, and the sequel.

    RIP Mr. Golan.
Just read this on Yahoo and thought of you, @Murdock, as you enjoy the Death Wish films so much. Plus he gave us Van Damme's first film that made him famous, Blood Sport.

It is a sad time for lovers of the lovable cheesy Cannon films. Rest in peace Mr. Golan. Death Wish 3 will always be my favorite Cannon film.

True, his movies were often crap (right, Mr. Norris ?), but one of them at least was very, very good : Runaway Train. Which proves that some pretty flowers can raise from a big heap of manure.

What about Leatherface: Thexas Chainsaw Massacre III? Some fans of the series (but not this fan) have a real downer on it, then again, i've seen fans defend TNG...

@MajorDSmythe, I just watched a clip from it, and it really doesn't look familiar to me at all. I don't believe I've seen it.

Also, Viggo Mortensen is in it? Yet another actor who made it big, but first started out in a little-known TCM film.

EDIT: Actor JJ Murphy has passed away. He was four days into shooting for his role on 'Game of Thrones,' for which he will not be recast:

Just learned the very sad news of the passing of Robin Williams.
He was one of my favourite stand up comedians . A true genius. And a very talented actor to boot.
    A sad day.RIP

I saw something on Buzzfeed saying Robin Williams was dead. I passed it off as a rumour or joke a la Sean Connery, but thought I would search it in the news anyway. Absolutely shocked, a great comedic genius and talent with perfect charisma, timing and so over the top it gave him a certain edge. A shame that his life has ended far too early. Rest In Peace Mr Williams, you will be missed.

Robin Williams?! Holy crap I'm stunned. I was just thinking of him the other day. His wiki page is overloaded right now. RIP to a legend.

It's the passing of people like this that you really don't expect that manages to shock you. He was only 63. Feels unreal.
  • So far they're saying it's suicide... it's very sad that he died but knowing he thought this might be the only way out of something makes it all the more awful. And it's odd since he was always so good at making other peope laugh. May he rest in peace.
  • This is terrible to hear. RIP to one of the funniest actors of his generation and a great guy.

I just found out and can't really make sense of reality. Around this time every year I watch Good Will Hunting to savor the performances he and Matt's Damon give, only this time it will be more heartbreaking than ever. Unfortunately, a man who could light up a room with laughs at the drop of a hat can sometimes be the loneliest and most sad of them all, and it's a shame that this has come to pass. We can add Robin's name to the list of other great talents who shined far too brightly for this world of ours. RIP, you brilliant man.

Terrible news. Just heard on the news. A great actor in both comedic and dramatic roles. A major loss to the film industry. Had the opportunity to meet and chat with him in the 1990's and he was very friendly. A legend. Thoughts to his family and friends.
