Even the worst reviews seem to say it's better than KOTCS, which is about all I can ask for I guess. I haven't been loving the trailers like most but I hope I enjoy it in the end.

    50% on rotten tomatoes.

Has anyone contemplated that this might actually be WORSE than Crystal Skull?

    :-?
It definitely could , depends on the ending. We’re all hoping it’s at least a little better than that one.

I don’t think any of the reviews are indicating that.
Lucasfilm’s confidence seems a little misplaced though.

Admittedly it’s only eight reviews so far. Gotta wait to see how it all pans out.

The odd thing is that the score on the aggregators is lower than Crystal Skull's, but the reviews are generally reading as it being better than Skull (quite a few literally say that). There's a couple of pannings, but the 3-star ones generally read that it's fine, not actually bad.

Obviously I was hoping for it to be better than fine, but I guess it's good to have your expectations lowered. Mission Impossible will still be great!

There's a YouTube channel claiming the film is terrible blah blah blah based on the Rotten Tomatoes score. It's just click bait because only 8 reviews are online. That's the internet for you!

Good or bad, it's a reminder of time passing by. This year Star Trek The Next Generation came to an end in Picard season 3. 1987 - 2023. The crew's final mission.

The Indiana Jones franchise ends* with Dial of Destiny. 1981 - 2023. Indiana's search for rare antiquity is over.

    * (Until Disney reboot it)

    ;)

They wouldn’t necessarily need to reboot it. Just recast it and set it in the 30s/40s. The films are relatively standalone. Rebooting would only make sense if they were to do something drastic like have 35 year old Indy exist in the 2020s.

I generally don't take too much notice of movie reviews. I like to make my own mind up on whether I like a movie or not.

I'd be perfectly up for that. I wouldn't mind a TV show in the style of Mandalorian even. Do a young-ish Indy in the 20 or early 30s having adventures so it remains slightly its own thing if they wanted it to be.
Bob Iger has said yesterday at the premiere that they may consider more projects in the world of Indy after this, but that may perhaps just be a way of trying to signal that they're confident about this film to sell some tickets.

I keep hearing it’s better than Crystal Skull. I’m just happy that we got another Indy film. A controversial opinion of mine, is that Indiana Jones could have been like James Bond as a continuation franchise. There would always be a artifact or a threat in any era of time. Books, movies and video games, Lucasfilm could have taken better care with Indy after the 2000s. They focused too much on Star Wars. Speaking of Star Wars, James Mangold’s film could depend solely on Indy’s success, financially and critically. He stayed on for Indy, which says something considering Lucasfilm and their directors. After Book of Henry failed, that was one of the reasons Colin Trevorrow was fired from Star Wars 9. I still plan to see Indy, either way.

Definitely agree. Indy always makes money; it's bizarre they just abandoned it.

I agree with all of that. The movies are Bond-esque in a lot of ways and I wish we had gotten at least 1-2 more back in the day when the gang were all still in their primes. Plus lots of other media as you mentioned. It has endless potential just like Bond, always can have a new mission with new + familiar elements.

I think part of that is those in power that want to have Harrison Ford be the only Indiana Jones, Spielberg’s clear reluctance that dragged the film until he finally dropped out, and the fact that Disney doesn’t technically have the complete rights to Indy given that Paramount owns distribution rights to the first four films and Young Indy. Any talk of expanding the Indy brand seems to only be involving projects that won’t feature the Indy character. Though there’s talk of the Helena character getting her own spin-off, I wouldn’t be surprised if Short Round gets something, given the actor’s Oscar win.

Truthfully Disney only bought LucasFilm for Star Wars. If they could have, they would have bought that brand and nothing else. They did try to revive WILLOW but that didn’t pan out. The only other option for LucasFilm at this point is to try original works that have nothing to do with their existing IP. It’s not like anyone is clamoring for RADIOLAND MURDERS.

I don't have much interest in a Short Round thing, because I have no idea what that would be. We don't know what the character would be like, and it would be set in the 70s most probably, which isn't very Indy. Dial of Destiny is fine to be set in '69 because it's got actual Indy in it. Maybe it would be okay but there's nothing which immediately appeals without a more solid idea.
I'd maybe spin off from the opening 1944 sequence. It seems like Indy is part of a team recovering artefacts stolen by the Nazis in the war, so do a series or something following that team. Then it's recognisably in Indy's world of action adventure, early 20th century, Nazis, antiquities and treasures etc.
Apparently Helena is very strong in this film though. Maybe she would be up to having her own spinoff, I'll have to see it first. I don't hate the idea in prospect.

As Bond fans though, I imagine most of us don't hugely mind the idea of a recast.

Indeed, but why they didn't put an Indy into production as soon as they bought it baffles me a bit: I can't believe a huge studio like that didn't have the bandwidth for it, and they're sure fire hits. And, although he's clearly still capable, Force Awakens-era Ford was even closer to his peak.

Lots of factors, but I think the biggest was Spielberg waiting for a script that he was 100% confident in, and that Spielberg kept putting other projects as a priority which put Indy 5 in development hell. Notice that once he dropped out and Mangold took over that things accelerated.

I have intentionally avoided most of the build up for DOD, I don't care about reviews i will make my own mind up when I watch it in the cinema. This film was always going to be a nostalgia trip for me.

If it is (even) better than Crystal Skull, I'm dying to see it. I like Crystal Skull.

I relinquished Star Wars after the dismal "prequel" trilogy, which I have never rewatched after the first time, and have never seen any other SW franchise movie since then (not considering several viewings of the original trilogy, of course). But I think all four Indy movies are great (with the fourth a bit worse than the others), but hey, keep them coming.

There's much in CRYSTAL SKULL I enjoy. I just love seeing a new Indiana Jones movie. I remember when LAST CRUSADE seemed to be the final film, I was thrilled another was on the horizon.
I'm not really expecting this new one to be on the same level as RAIDERS, but nevertheless, I can hardly wait another month for DESTINY.

The Fridge thing & the animated monkeys really brought the movie down for many fans, but I remember the snake reflection in the first, the monkey brains in the second, and the fake tear in the tail of the plane in the third....

The fridge scene never bothered me, oddly.
The third act is where I felt the film lost momentum. Who knows? I may love it now.

No one does. You can argue that the worst thing to happen to the Indy franchise was that ROTLA set a standard so high that it was impossible to match it.

Ever since I first saw the trilogy as a young boy, Last Crusade has been my favorite. I totally understand why Raiders is generally seen as #1 and I also find it fantastic, but the Connery factor, humor, and heart of Crusade does so much for me. Very much looking forward to a new marathon of these movies leading up to the last one.

If you do, watch it on Paramount + or Disney+ from next week, or the new 4K set. The new regraded version of it looks so much better than the original.

I think that’s totally understandable. The first three are all excellent films, I can completely see why someone would prefer the warmth of LC.

Raiders to me is untouchable, Spielberg at his peak, along with Jaws.

Temple of Doom - not bad, although Shortround annoys me.

Last Crusade - great pairing with Connery (although I wish they had made his character a bit cooler and less of a wally - more like how he is in The Rock and Rising Sun), and I really like the story in this one. The film is let down by some surprising dodgy special effects (Hindenburg, the plane battle, etc.), but the ending is just as good as Raiders.

Crystal Skull - awful, horrendous. It's worse than DAD or NTTD (and that is saying something)! This film should never have been made.

I'm not very hopeful for the new one, which is probably a good place to be, as my expectations are at an all-time low. Maybe I will be pleasantly surprised.
  • Crystal skull has good things in it, mainly Ford himself and most things except the scenes involving Mutt and Ray Winstone constantly shouting "Jonesy". If DOD is the fourth best Indy film I will be happy.

Temple of Doom is my favorite for how wild it is. I didn't think Crystal Skull was that bad, either. Too much CGI but it was fun seeing an Indiana Jones movie on the big screen for the first time. It didn't really feel like part of the trilogy, more like a "hey, let's check in on this character to see how he's doing" kind-of thing. Basically a coda to the originals.

This new one looks pretty rote. Judging by a recent review, the leaks were about half-right. Thankfully the ending isn't a total insult.
They were right about time travel and Mutt being unceremoniously killed off in Vietnam, which is a scummy thing to do to a character. Reminds me of Alien 3.
