Even if he hasn't got the biggest part in the world ( is that too personal ) :))

The tragedy for this actor is that, being German, he will spend a lot of his career playing Nazis. This is one thing I was actually reluctant about Christoph Waltz's casting, if he does play the villain (Blofeld or other): I was afraid this was a tad too cliché casting a German as a badguy. Then again he is Christoph Waltz.

Why is that so tragic? Typecasting isn't necessarily bad. Don't forget, it's still one hell of a wunderful job compared to our day-to-day office jobs :-). I'd love to give up my life for being typecasted as bad guy constantly. Waltz must be a very rich man already.

I agree, an acting job is an acting job, especially in a line of work that has such a high rate of unemployment. So being typecast is not so bad because it means you are being cast. Still, it is nice to play different roles and against type sometimes. Waltz I think plays as easily the good guy ad the badguy.

Perhaps Waltz likes to play these roles a lot. In my opinion, playing a bad guy doesn't necessarily translate into a one-sided character. Waltz himself lately said that the nice thing of playing a bad guy is, that they are usually very complex characters. Even more so than the antagonists. Look to Silva. Bloody hell, in all honesty....the stuff Bond has been going through sort of pales in comparison to Silva. I mean, did Bond's insides got mutiliated?

Just as a side note, is there still a chance for SP to be screened in IMAX, or is it not possible for a film to be optimized for IMAX screens if it's filmed with 35mm?

A very good question. I really hope "SPECTRE" will be shown in IMAX to be honest. It's a format that lends itself perfectly for non-fantasy, non-sci-fi, more realistic action movies.

Completely agree. For me, part of what made the experience of seeing Skyfall for the first time so incredible, was IMAX. I was amazed at the audio and visual experience that it offered. It would be a shame and a missed opportunity (critically and financially) for EON if SPECTRE isn't shown in IMAX.

Perhaps the train arrival in Mürren? I recall those were the only scenes where there wasn't a lot of snow.

I also see parts of the cables from the cable car.

They should film the winter scenes in Japan. Not shortage of snow there!
Some of the reports from over there observing over 9m of snowfall since November - at town level!

That and the whole Japan thing... sounds perfect to me!

Thankfully Waltz's second Oscar was for playing a good guy.

I agree villains are often far more interesting to play. Heck I'd rather play the villain than James Bond! But then again you can be typecast as a villain. I have a friend who is an actor, a big man, very large. He got fed up playing the brute. One of his favourite role was Louis XVII, whom he played as very effeminate and as a coward.

Yes it's possible for any film to be optimised for IMAX. Can't really say here though on specifics re: SPECTRE and IMAX as those are from the Sony leak (unless someone says its ok to say exactly what it is?)

I was just having a look at all of Daniel Craig's teaser posters:

    gwK4oi.jpg
    NmrVsM.jpg
    WpqzeV.jpg

As you can see "Skyfall" already mentioned during a very early stage that it would be shot in IMAX. The "SPECTRE" teaser doesn't mention it. So I don't know....

Not shot in IMAX @Gustav_Graves, but released in IMAX. Plus the Skyfall teaser poster landed in May just before the teaser, we got the SPECTRE one unusually early.

I definitely can't say the IMAX info for SPECTRE from the leak? Even though it's not spoilers?
  • I'm glad the decision not to film in IMAX was made. The problem with IMAX is the size of the cameras and the noise they emit make it near impossible to shoot an entire film on the format. While I love Christopher Nolan's films, the chief problem I have is the shifting aspect ratios between the more 'normal' dramatic scenes and the 'spectacle' driven moments. The shift is so distracting for me, as the IMAX cameras clearly have a superior resolution to normal film cameras, so at time it's almost like watching two different movies and can suck you out of the drama. I understand the appeal of the medium and the thrill of seeing a film in a large cinema but I'm not a total convert to the process.

Here are two shots from TDKR to show my point:

    the_dark_knight_rises_1080p_kissthemgoodbye_net_0556.jpg

Apparently, there were some conversations that Spectre would film some action sequences with a larger aspect ratio so they can 'fake' the IMAX experience. I hope to god this isn't true.

That's exactly what's happening. Mendes wanted to shoot these sequences in IMAX but backed away from using the cameras - in his defense though it would have been pointless given that after Interstellar there are only very very few 70mm IMAX projectors showing the full screen image with the "proper" screen size/aspect ratio that shooting on IMAX gives you left in theaters, and the laser projectors won't be ready in time, so why not instead "fake it" by shooting at 1.85:1 instead and then the prevalent digital IMAX screens will have these images full-screen?

Some directors are better than others with the aspect ratio flipping - best so far is Francis Lawrence with the second Hunger Games, the entire 50 minute 'games' sequence was presented in the 70mm IMAX aspect ratio, with very few bits such as the control room that weren't able to be shot on IMAX, they did the same thing as Mendes is doing here, shoot them 1.85:1 then they crop it for 1.44:1 of 70mm IMAX. Given that it's only a couple of sequences in SPECTRE that will be "formatted for IMAX", I think Mendes will do a better job of consistency and avoid the constant switching, especially as they can shoot more in the aspect ratio with just the usual 35mm cameras.
  • Well, even for Skyfall, the fact it seems it is impossible to find an IMAX image of it means they're probably not proud of what they did. According to a French projectionist on a forum I read, they even had to zoom in the image for every parts where the CG was done only for the standard ratio...

Not really hard, just try catch Skyfall on TV?

Anyway they are treating the scenes shot in 1.85:1 like if they were shot in IMAX, so that shouldn't be an issue anymore.

So SPECTRE is likely to be screened in IMAX. I'm really thrilled about this. Seeing Skyfall for the first time in IMAX really amped the experience for me.

If you know the leaked script, then you know everything about his part.
But you can only discuss it in the spoiler thread.

For me the "IMAX-experience" can be created in several ways. What counts is the actual cinema-set-up. Like you see here:

    Imax1.jpg

As you can see: More curved screen. Way larger from bottom to top than normal cinema screens. And a football stadium-esque elevation of the chairs from bottom to top.

It's not only about using an IMAX-camera, but also on how the movie can be fully used on the above screen.

Now I know my native country The Netherlands is the most densely filled IMAX-country. But ever since I saw "Star Trek" in 2009 in Pathé Bijlmer Arena (IMAX) I was f*ck*i*g hooked :-). And that was even more enhanced when I saw "Skyfall" there. It's just an experience.

Now I know "Skyfall" wasn't filmed with IMAX-camera's, but I think the fact that it was filmed digitally (with more images per second as opposed to normal camera's) also helped to complete a, translate it into a near-perfect IMAX-experience.

I loved it. And I seriously want another IMAX-experience for "SPECTRE" as well.

Excluding the script, we know, that he filmed a scene with Ben Whishaw in a cable car in Sölden a week ago.
And in the interview with him, he says, that it felt like doing a small independent film. The atmosphere on set was very familiar.

Apparently a translation from the original news report stated that
he's just a heavy type role who is pursuing Q - I think he's just a bit character

Q's opposite number in in the SPECTRE organization, maybe?
