As successful as SF was, there's no way 'Bond 24' will beat the new 'Star Wars.' Granted, it's not always about which film does better at the box office, because frankly, if 'Bond 24' is great, and it makes a big enough amount back to be considered very successful, I'm happy.
Bond films will always be a financial success. What I want is great scripting, acting, directing, etc.
I mean, it's Bond, it's going to take A LOT for me to not be happy with the final product.
Story of my life. Heck, I even like Die Another Day. I am, however, counting on Bond 24 turning out a little bit better than that.
Thankfully SF was received extraordinarily well and coming off the back of that good will particularly with Mendes returning, I think it's safe to say we will at least get a very good movie. However, Mendes needs to not repeat himself and really tell a bold, engaging, fun and exciting movie and for Sony/Eon or whoever to come up with the mother of all marketing campaigns. SW and the finale hobbit movie are going to be super big and Bond needs that wow factor to really compete.
Maybe Eon will put Bond back in space to compete with the new Star Wars Flick. Moonraker Part 2! Bond meets Drax's son! ;)
Where did you here this @JWESTBROOK?
i didn't mean extravagant in that manner eh. if that's the case I hoped Daniel Craig took cues from Harrison Ford (Han Solo) when they did Cowboys & Aliens :P
Part of the reason I prefer Casino Royale over Skyfall is because the former is more extravagant. CR also has the right balance of humour and they opted to leave out the corny one liners. Thank god for Martin Campbell!
So the only negative is the cost of seeing both, and for some people making the time to see both. I wish SW would move closer to Xmas, too. I am not worried about competition for Bond, though.
Bond 24 should still do fine, especially after how much of a hit SF was.
I read that they 'swapped' releases, and sort of assumed that meant opening the 6th. I've edited my post, as I now recognize how unclear it all is. We shall know soon enough.
I feel Ep. 7 opening the 13th wouldn't be surprising; kind of fun with the whole 'unlucky' voodoo with the number, too.
I also think it is good to have two very good, highly anticipated films coming out in the same season - just not the same week, perhaps. For moviegoers who love seeing a film in the theatre, it's nice to be excited about a coming season: "Wow! First Bond, then Star Wars. Fantastic!" I'd feel like that. I really love to see a film in the theatre, it is a totally bigger/better experience.
I'm a big fan of CR but free of corny lines, seriously there is nothing as bad in SF as that little finger line or for instance that gratuitous omega plug.
I think we are forgetting the stinkers CR had, personally I think the SF screenplay was a step up and is the best written film of the Craig era.
I know SF wasn't perfect we'll likely never get a perfect entry but it hit more than it missed, I really don't see the problem with all the casino sequence, the Severine exchange is one of the best parts of the film and the Craig era full stop, yes one too many one liners at the end but for me Craig played a blinder and no I don't mind the Moore tribute. Do we just want a dour action thriller or do we want some colour in Bond again, SF for me showed that DC can inject a little of the heritage back into the series and look forward to something more fun the next time round, I certainly don't want QOS 2.
If you consider it's on the same day of release, it will be the first time.
if you consider its on the same year, it will the the fifth time (TSWLM, OP, TWINE, DAD before)
The smaller gap was ROTJ vs OP two weeks later in the US. This way "Round II" looks acceptable though...
If you are superstitious, it's a good sign : worldwide, ROTJ was #1 and OP was #2 that year (forget all this nonsense about Moore being the low box office point of the Bonds, it's quite the contrary)

@shardlake
"I think the SF screenplay was a step up and is the best written film of the Craig era."
hmmm.... in terms of screenplay, this is my ranking: CR>SF>QoS. It's still illogical how Silva planned that attack on M years before. Knowing M will be at the hearing at the exact date is hard to believe. What if Q decided to analyze Silva's computer a day later? How would Silva escape and get to M? Skyfall trumps CR in terms of cinematography, lighting, re-watching factor and psycho themes. Overall, I still prefer CR though.
If Bond 24 is "competing" with SW 7, then Babs and Wilson need to up the ante; Bond 24 must be the biggest budgeted in the Craig era. The most exotic locales, fanciest rides, thrilling stunts (bring back skiing a la Lazenby, rock climbing or whatever that's cool), non-CGI villain set (if there'll be one), high-powered firearms for Bond, and bigger action scenes (like the airport scramble and parkour chase in CR)
Or it's more than likely to be yet another bullshit tabloid story from a 'journalist' with nothing else on his desk! ;-)
I'd usually agree with you, but this has been written by Baz Bamigboye.
For those who followed SF's production they know that Baz broke all the big scoops before filming. He revealed Ralph Fiennes's involvement, said Harris was Moneypenny, revealed the casting of Albert Finney and Helen McCrory, etc.
Baz is a big player in the London theatre and film scene. Even during the SF launch press conference back in Nov 2011 he was name-checked by Sam Mendes and Barbara Broccoli.
If Baz says it, it likely has more than an ounce of truth to it.
Baz is credible but not 100%. He has failed in the past but he also had some nice scoops. I would bet this one falls on the former category.
Considering Bond 24 is still in pre-production and the movie is over 2 years away from hitting the screens, I shall take every news story with a pinch of salt.
Anyway, I think this is pure gossip. MP had her chance to be Bond's sidekick at the start of SF. She implied fieldwork is not for her at the end of SF.
Still, I'd prefer if the next Bond girl will stay longer and help JB fight the villain; it would happen if the action will happen far, far away from MI 6 or UK. Oh I nearly forgot about Leiter which needs a kind of support alongside Bond like in the good, old Connery days.
