But while there maybe Mendes got inspiration? He's all about doing new things and taking on new challenges, so maybe taking Bond to Ireland for the first time would be just that for him.

Insanity.
The truth is that studios lie all the time about the budget of tentpole flicks, often playing down how expensive these films really are.
But QOS is clearly a very expensive film; there is a huge amount of location work (imagine having to take an entire crew with you and keep them fed over six different locations) and lots of big scale action work.
SF was much more modest by comparison. However, SF used it's money more wisely and actually delivered a better movie for it. Big most definitely does not mean better. I'd quite happily see Bond's budget slashed considerably and we instead we can instead hopefully get a grittier tougher picture set in the Cold War.
My real worry is the use of more and more CG to cut the budget...
For a looong time, the Bond movies were the movies in which the producers put all the money on screen. I'm sure Cubby could have fired Curd Jurgens (random choice of actor) if he had asked for 10% more salary. In the meantime I think he could have decided "easily" to put shiny pieces of metal all over the place inside the Liparus set to make it look better on the screen even if it costed dozens of thousands of dollars.
Now, I'm afraid someone from Sony come and say : "Listen, Sam, do you really need to go to that exotic place ? Just shoot with a green screen at the back of the set, and we can ask Sony Picture Imageworks or another one of our companies to re-create the background. You know, One Sony. And then we have more money left to pay the stars who will bring in the audience, and their agents."
I'd love to see Scandinavia, and a Scandinavian villain, but I think it might be too expensive to shoot.
If it's too expensive for them to go to Stockholm or Helsinki for example, then perhaps the budget cuts are bigger than I thought! They're not far from England.
It would be good to see Bond in Copenhagen too as I've lived there. :)
I agree Scandinavia would be great, it would be nice to see some scenes in Stockholm, Oslo or Helsinki and then out into the countryside for some snowy action.
But I also agree that it's unlikely to happen. Given the amount of CGI used in SF it seems that proper location filming is slowly dying in Bond films. Although I suppose shutting down Whitehall was impressive but Silva's island says it all. Could have easily sent the 2nd unit to get some establishing shots even if they did everything with the actors on a set but they couldn't even be bothered to do that. Much cheaper to have a CGI rendering with a convenient bank of fog to hide the join.
The prices of food and accommodation in Scandinavia make it pretty impractical to take a large unit there.
Plus don't forget that every film that wants to make big money has to have some scenes set in China these days so we'll probably be going back there before long.
What I meant by that is that the cost of living being very high, the cost of shooting there may be too. Don't get me wrong, I WANT to see Bond go there, I think the settings would be visually stunning, original and even inspiring plot-wise. But I wonder if it is not too expensive.
With QoS I wondered seriously about it when CR & SF look far better and more luxurious.
I agree, I think it is better to show more of less, so to speak, i.e. give a sense of place and explore a particular setting, instead of traveling all around. Have a DN or TB kind of movie in that sense, with one main setting. And in Europe, there are still a few places that are both cheap AND good looking. One or the other is easy to find, both at the same time, this is when it becomes challenging.
Stop making me dream. I'd LOVE to see Sweden in a Bond movie, it is a beautiful country and geographically, it could lead to some interesting plots (what with its proximity with Russia). AND they would have plenty of material for Bond girls. But I still fear it is too expensive.
Because Mark Forster decided to bring the whole crew to all those far away locations, only to NOT show any of it, really. :-w
You can see, he is dear to my heart :D
Look at MR that did some pretty special locations and yet you see the money spend on the big screen.
Looking at that budget, no it was very poor.
Heck Top Gear showed the flipping Desert from South America better and they do not have the budget that QoS had.
The money spend on Sienna and suroundings was a waste of money as they did not show all that much. As for carchases the Aston Martin was undoubtely expensive but the whole chase looked so cheap and that was hidden due to pisspoor editing. Which was the fate for most actionscenes.
QoS makes other 007 flics look great in actionscenes and overal viewing pleasure.
The one thing I say about money spend on QoS, Dench & Craig were worth their paycheck. Had QoS been the first 007 outing by Craig we would by now be talking about the next guy. ;)
It looked quite nice (outside of the action scenes, when you could actually see what was going on), but Bond films with lower budgets have managed to show off much more. Look at YOLT and how brilliantly realised Japan was.
No problem @Creasy47 each his own, I felt that better directors had done more with less budget.
I forgot that I really was impressed by the Opera decor, that was money well spend.
And In my humble opinion they did the beauty of Italy no great service with QoB.
After SF, there was enough profit to buy out McClory.
