What kind of movies does Bond like?

Yeah, silly question, but I do wonder. I myself can almost see Bond enjoying all types of film as a pastime. I can also picture him having a soft spot for the cult/kitsch. What do you guys think?

I seem to recall that in one of the Benson novels, it is revealed that James Bond's favorite actor is Sean Connery (Bond saw The Untouchables twice!).

    Documentaries.
  • Bond loves Twilight and The Notebook

Nah seriously I read in one of the books that Bond doesn't even own a TV (probably too busy gambling and having sex with women) 8->

I can't really see him being a massive movie buff to be honest. He'd be too cynical of them (though he does watch a bit of a film in YOLT). If I were to say who his favourite "stars" might of been I'd say Greta Garbo, David Niven, James Mason, Cary Grant and (of the modern era) Daniel Day Lewis, Judi Dench, Kate Winslet and (perhaps) Bill Murry because, despite him being American, he has a dry, droll personality

Strangely, I conjure Bond being a mild fan of Hitchcock & film noir... but only after the occasional drink on a lonely night. I imagine possibly Casablanca being his most watched film at three or four times.

What, like Cowboys & Aliens? Outland? The Lawnmower Man? The Rocketeer?

well I know Craig's Bond would love Star Trek since Craig stated he was a trekkie and hoped he could some day be in a future Star Trek film. ;)

In the books Fleming has Bond remember Charles Laughton in The Life of Henry VIII (1933). He doesn't get out much!

I think Bond would like classic films of the 40s and 50s, reflecting his time but also for the simple fact that they are great films that captivated the viewer. I am sure he would be fascinated by some of the stories, their stark black and white visuals, be they character studies, war films, romances, dramas, or more.

He mainly enjoys horror films, action films, thrillers, martial arts films, exploitation films, comedies and the odd bit of sci fi.

Yes I just put my personal tastes but that's what you lot have all been doing :P

He likes football, boxing and formula 1. He's a West Ham fan, his favourite f1 driver of all time is Senna and his favourite current driver is Fernando Alonso.
  • For some reason, I picture Bond to be a bit of Godzilla fan.

No, I actually tried to imagine what a man like him would enjoy. I am a martial artist, yet I enjoy nonsense movies on the subject. I'd assume he might get a kick out nonsense mysteries with a romantic edge in the same way.

I wonder if Bond would have liked the Austin Powers films
  • ^ Good question! I wonder if he would actually like a Bond-style film in general.
  • Well, there are two different Bonds...

I can't see the Bond of the films watching movies. Somehow I can't imagine him sitting still for 2 hours to watch fake people do fake things that are less exciting than his own life. He's so confident that he wouldn't have stars that he admires or wants to be like; he could be aware of actresses from the newspapers of from TV news (the only kind of TV I could see him watching, and only for a few minutes at a time).

Now, the Bond of the books - I could see him enjoying films. Remember, he's a wistful romantic so I could see him watching those types of films and enjoying them, and especially foreign films. I could see him catching matinees when skipping out of work one day just to pass the time and try to fight off the boredom of not being on a mission. For those who think it would be beneath Bond, remember that this is that man who got surprisingly involved in a trashy paperback he was reading while waiting out the days in Berlin in The Living Daylights.

I really think he would love war films to reflect on his background. He could connect to them through common experience, and I have a feeling he would like documentaries on such things, revolving around Britain and its ties to past wars.

War films suck, at least in the past. He might like "Saving Private Ryan" though.

    What?

War films are some of the greatest film masterpieces in the history of celluloid from the 40s to today.

What does that have to do with anything?

I doubt films like Apocalypse Now are any lesser the masterpieces they are depending on whether or not you have been to war.

I think what he means is that Bond, having lived through a war, would have found war films...lacking (especially if we are talking about Fleming's Bond). What would be up on screen would be nothing like the reality that he lived through, and I don't think he'd have any interest in revisiting it through a fictional, sanitized film anyway.

Sorry, my definition of 'old' is old it seems. Some war films from "Paths Of Glory" on have been great.

The film where we have Franz Sanchez himself utter the immortal line "It must be weird working in a place where guys don't cum on your face, huh?"

His thoughtful, sincere delivery of that line is one of the funniest line readings in a film that I've ever seen. My girlfriend and I saw the film as part of a Pride Week film festival and the mostly gay audience was amazing to watch it with, especially the "gay Greek Chorus" behind us who helped narrate the film and gave exaggerated reactions ("Oh NO she di'nt!!!) to some of the funniest bits. One of the best theatre experiences I've ever had.
