I'm sure he does. That's tantamount to saying to a woman, 'Well you didn't complain the first time you were raped, what was wrong with it this time?'
Before this is blown out of all proportion, although it seems we have reached critical mass, my view is solely from the POV of Bond. I enjoy the idea of borrowing from Fleming in reference to Bond's psyche, but when it comes to morals and ethics, things which evolve and change over time, I don't find Bond's actions in said scene reflective of a modern Bond. It's got nothing to do with being a role model or an altar boy, it's about Bond being a man of the moment, a thoughtful more mature Bond. But then I don't feel the need to justify every frame of SF. The shower scene is straight out of a Moore film.
Don't really agree with that one mate,
But Bond would should have saved her at the clutches of Silva, He was anyway going to do his Ninja stuff. It just doesn't make sense for them to make her die out like that.
The whole idea from the writers point of view must have been to sadden the audience by her death, instead we should get angry with how poorly that scene was written.
I think you have something there. Separate to this debate on SF, there does seem to be a long running theme in films going back to beginning of Hollywood that bad girls have to die. Never understood why...
Wow. He's definitely top of my list now.
TSWLM might have been good in the 70s, but I always found it too sci-fi heavy, way too recycled (it is basically YOLT rewritten) and often marred with silliness. I like Brannagh, I loved his Henry V, I even enjoyed his Frankenstein, but we don't need a new TSWLM. A new TB sure, a new FRWL, it is always welcomed, a new OHMSS would be nice to see. But a new TSWLM? As much as a new MR or a new YOLT. Hey it's the same movie anyway.
What I meant is that nobody complained about Bond seducing Honey Ryder, who had been raped as a child. Because Honey Ryder consented to sex with Bond, obviously. So now a Bond girl with a troubled past should not have consensual sex with Bond? I don't get it. Obviously, there is a notion of wish fulfillment in Bond-Bond girls relationships: the alpha male awakening the sexuality of woman that has been made frigid because of a troubled past, often because she has been raped, sexually abused or sexually controlled. It is one of Fleming's recurrences. Why complaint about it now? Why changing it? Are the characters not as good because of this?
Mod edit: personal insults removed.
I might add that, GF, the culturally favourite Bond film to many arguably has Bond forcing himself (some have accused him of rape) onto Pussy and well well well, it's the go to Bond movie so many praise. I mean forget Bond sleeping with a past sexually abused woman, let's enjoy and take our kids to see Bond overpowering and forcing himself onto a lesbian woman Literally in the hay until she sees things his way.
Yeah! You're so right! Ha, I hope Bond rapes a woman in Bond 24, it'll be so totally badass.
agreed
And so because SF is a rehash of TWINE and GE I assume you don't like that either...?
Every Bond film that is not based on a Fleming novel usually ends up being a mash up of something that's come before. What do they say - there are essentially only 5 basic stories in the world and everything is a variation on them.
I assume when Branagh says that TSWLM is Bond for him, he probably means unbridled and almost flawless entertainment from start to finish, rather than his admiration for the subtleties of the plot. And if that's his sentiment, I share it 100%. We'd be damn lucky if we ever got a Bond movie of TSWLM's quality ever again. If you don't like Spy, you don't have a heart.
Completely agree.
Ditto.
"You have found 1 out of 1 results."
Let's keep it on topic. I don't see how rape has to do with Mendes not returning as director.
Well, I don't think SF is a rehash of TWINE and GE, although they have similarities (and of course use the same source). I am all for reusing existing material, heck FYEO and TLD were influenced by FRWL and they were good in their own rights. But they managed to depart from it. TSWLM is a completely recycled YOLT, with the same flaws and since I consider YOLT the movie where quality dropped considerably, I am not a big fan of TSWLM.
And I don't like TSWLM. I don't think it is bad, it is better than MR, it is still a completely recycled YOLT, with way too much sci-fi for my taste. And I don't care whether I have a heart or not by your standards: I don't know why Brannagh said TSWLM is the Bond movie for him, I cannot presume of his reasons. I think we did have Bond movies far superior to it afterwards and I find myself more confident when a director says he loves other Bond movies (T=the first four of Connery, OHMSS).
Now as to Branagh and Spy, I'd be fine with a grandiose spectacle and I have always appreciated Branagh's genius both as an actor and director.
Ludovico strikes again! Spy is a rehash of YOLT. And I love them both :)
I would love Kenneth Branagh as director, if he was really desiring to do a Bond film. And I do think he can pick and choose at this point. He is a wonderful director. I read elsewhere he has commitments, but I am hopeful.
For me, Branagh - now that I really seriously think about it - tops my list.
And maybe Kathryn Bigelow would be a good choice (again if she is a Bond fan; I honestly do not know). I also think John Madden or Matthew Vaughn could do well as a Bond director.
I think the franchise needs a new Terence Young, not a new Lewis Gilbert. And Young did not direct three times the same movie. Don't get me wrong, I like Branagh, I even enjoyed his Frankenstein and even to a lesser degree his Hamlet. But as a Bond director, I think he might be... superficial?
Love this. I was very interested to see if there were new reports or something but instead it's just the same people complaining about the same things we've heard over and over. Oh well...
This constant need to pull Skyfall apart is now getting ridiculous, no it wasn't perfect but the way you see some discuss it was was made by extremely incompetent director and has the worst script of all time.
Yes compared to say Chinatown both CR & SF are lacking but in the blockbuster medium these films are of a high quality and better than most of the dreck that Joe public would pay for, yet we get people saying how they'd have shot it and how they would have written the script, it's laughable, I don't think somepeople takes into a account these films are made for a mass paying public, it's just a case of no it wasn't the film I wanted and didn't resemble my own personal Bond wet dream therefore it's poor and a insult to the series.
^:)^
People had 4 years to dream up what their "Bond 23" would be like and when it wasn't the film in their head, they get pissed and they have a need to tell EVERYBODY.
I'm afraid that I have to 'fess up to loving YOLT as well!
Oh me too, it has a better score, arguably better production design and a sense of energy altogether missing from TB. That said, I think TSWLM is better. YOLT 2.0 if you will.
