I think TLD is one of the most underrated action flicks of the '80s. And apart from its action, it has style and it brings the content. But all those idiots who had long been waiting for a chance to bully the Bond films had found it. Timothy Dalton was treated like the mentally challenged kid in the playground. Any smart person can tell that Dalton was the right person for the job. He had the looks, he was committed and he's a great actor. And he could throw a punch, did several of his own stunts and looked smashing in any suit. Yet as always, there were those, the wannabe hipsters, that claimed the world no longer needed a James Bond. That was over three decades ago and we now know who was wrong. My only regret is that Dalton came out of this as the victim. He's since become a far more celebrated Bond and TLD has become a much more beloved movie overall, but it should have gotten the praise it deserved upon its release and we should have gotten more than two Dalton Bonds.

My go to magazine back when TLD was released was 'Time Out' magazine who gave it a very good review.

I remember that review. I think they did the same for LTK?
Agree with you regarding it never leaving my top 5. In fact it and LTK and OHMSS are my golden 3. Will always be my go to Bond movies!

Yeah i think they gave LTK a decent review. So did my other favourite at that time, 'Starburst Magazine'

Ah, Starburst magazine, you're making me go misty eyed, Leonardpine!
Bought it every month, though it went downhill after editor Alan McKenzie left!
My brother is now collecting as many of the original issues as he can get hold of on eBay!

Still have the first issue! I used to collect it way up until the late 90's. So i have stacks of them stored away!

Cool. It had very good writers, John Brosnan, Tony Crawley,Phil Edwards Alan Jones and there was an expert on animation, who's name escapes me who was really good. Those early issues were fantastic!

Yeah, great magazine. John Brosnan was the Bond expert and even had a (now out of print) book published. Loved his column every month.

I think the member 'Bondsum' is also an avid fan of Starburst if i remember rightly.

I've got my picture in one of the issue's when i won a trip to the premiere of Bram Stoker's Dracula! Long time ago!

I still have a copy of Brosnan's JAMES BOND IN THE CINEMA 2nd edition. He wasn't the biggest Moore Bond fan, but thought AVTAK was the best Roger Bond.
Wish I still had my Dalton era Starburst magazines. great coverage of TLD
I particularly remember the issue with Christopher Reeve on the cover for SUPERMAN IV.

Yeah, i'm lucky enough to have all the 80's issues. I think the 'Skyship' helped Brosnan's appreciation of AVTAK. He loved Airships and their ilk.

You're lucky to have his 'James Bond In The Cinema'

I do own a signed copy of his 'Primal Screen'

Simple though it is, one of my favourite "minutes" of Barry Bond music starts playing in this video at the 1.51-minute mark.

It's hauntingly sensual and yet it has never made any soundtrack/score edition that I'm aware of.

It's just an orchestral scoring of the Pretenders song isn't it? Great music throughout TLD. Definitely one of Barry's masterpieces. Hope NTTD brings back the musical collaborations that Barry was so good at.

My understanding is the other way 'round. "If There was a Man" is "just" a vocal rendition of one of Barry's leitmotifs in the movie, i.e. the "Vienna Theme" (while "Where Has Everybody Gone" derives from the "Necros Theme"). I don't know how much Chrissie Hynde contributed to the music, but I understand she is only credited as a lyricist, not a composer.

Excellent film. Without a doubt, a top 10 in the series.
The only thing that lets it down is the weakness of the villains. I get that they where going for the FRWL feel with the villainy somewhat evenly spread across three characters, but Necros, Koskov and Whittaker don't have nearly the same impact and presence as Klebb, Grant and Kronsteen. That's the only thing that stops it being a true top tier Bond for me, but it's at the top of the second tier, if you will.

I know that a-ha did most of the music for the main theme, with Barry only adding the string arrangement.

I really wouldn't know, but the fact that he incorporated some of that a-Ha song (probably relatively late in production, after they sacked The Pretenders as theme artists) doesn't mean that the same applies for those "extra" songs. But then, I don't think that the a-Ha theme adds anything valuable to the movie in the first place. They should have let The Pretenders do it.

Top 10 Bond for me, number 8 with a bullet. Dalton is outstanding, he and TLD are such a breath of fresh air after the Moore era and AVTAK (I really like Roger, but there are only two films during his tenure I flat out like - FYEO and TSWLM). It features one of my favorite PTS (although I'll never not chuckle at M's mini office on the plane) and my absolute favorite car of the whole series, the V8 Vantage Volante (I'm delighted this kind of car is returning for NTTD). As far as the criticisms levied against the film, the villains may be ho-hum, but they're not the worst in the series and I think the problem with Dalton's quipping isn't because of his serious take, it's some of the writing. Salt corrosion? Could've come up with something better than that.
Doesn't matter, it's still a solid film. I remember it surprised me just how great it was when I first saw it about a decade ago.

Low key villains like in FYEO , wonderful movie but Zorin/May Day would eat Koskov alive

Talk of an extended Brosnan era in the middle of this thread made me think of an extended Dalton era where he takes the part for OHMSS in 69 and goes all the way to 02. Would have been crazy.

I belive Dalton started at the right time, and done just two more films after LTK. I really can't imagine him sticking around long enough to grow complacent as Bond.

On sayng that, in that film Possessed around 2001/2, he looked near identical to 1987/9:

His hair was shorter, that about it.

Yeah, I was half joking, there's no way anyone is going to play Bond for 30 years.

I wish Dalton had taken over for Rodge in 81 in FYEO and then finished out the decade. OP and AVTAK would obviously be reworked in that scenario to suit Dalton and TLD and LTK stay the same.

I largely agree with that scenario except I wouldn't want any Bond but Moore in OP. Perhaps if FYEO and OP switched places in the series sequence with Moore's Bond making his final adventure in a 1981 OP with Dalton's Bond debuting in a 1983 FYEO. I would also like Dalton Bond in GE since it was originally intended for his 007. The ghost of Dalton's Bond tends to haunt the 1995 Bond film for me.

I used to share that sentiment, thinking of Dalton being the Bond of the 80s while Rog would be known for the 70s. However, I think it worked out best as far as FYEO and OP were concerned, especially with the latter. FYEO was almost Moore’s last, but the advent of a rival Connery Bond film meant Cubby needed Moore for OP, as any newcomer would have been unfairly overlooked in light of Connery’s return. Having Moore in ‘83 evened out the playing field, and his film ended up being the bigger hit, assuring Moore’s legacy.

However, I do think it was time for Moore to bow out with OP. What better way of ending your tenure than beating Connery’s film at the box office? The fact that Cubby didn’t even consider a new Bond for AVTAK like with the previous two films says they only brought him back for a seventh as a victory lap for beating NSNA, which I felt was unnecessary.

That said, I wish Dalton had debuted in AVTAK. It obviously would have been recalibrated for his new take like TLD was. There wouldn’t have been the unfortunate stigma in the US with audiences thinking of Dalton as the “second choice” after Brosnan had to drop out of TLD. I can see a lot of gold mined out of Dalton facing off Walken. It would have been a pretty strong debut.

Still, I’m happy TLD turned out to be his debut as that ranks among the top on my Bond list. It’s just a shame the legal issues had delayed it. I’m sure he would have done two more before graciously bowing out (this fulfilling his contract), and Brosnan would have still come in next in time for a Bond 19 in 1995. I never saw Dalton being the type to do more than four. The fact he was only willing to come back for one more with GE rather than do a few more days he got what he wanted out of the role and was ready to move on.

I could see Dalton in OP. It has one of the best villain schemes and it's problem is that it jumps between being a full-on Rodge movie and having a more serious tone like FYEO. With Dalton they could have not had him dress as a clown, take out some of the cult stuff and some of the other campier elements and it would have worked great with him. I can't really see AVTAK with Dalton even reworked so I think they should have just done something else entirely for him in 85.

GE being "intended" for Dalton is an internet myth. The third Dalton film that was in development in the early 90's had a few plot similarities to GE (and TND) but would have been a different movie. By the time the shooting script was being written they knew Dalton wasn't coming back. I'm not sure if Broz had been cast yet.

Agree, it's a perfect debut for Dalton, or pretty much any Bond. It's just a classic Bond film along the lines of the first few Connery films, only a bit more hard edged and modern.

GE being intended for Dalton wasn’t just an internet myth. It’s been verified that the first draft of GE by Michael France was written when Dalton still held the role months before he decided to depart from the series. In fact the role of Defense Minister Mishkin was originally a much larger part that was intended to be the return Pushkin. Of course, it was a very different draft from the final version and whatever ties to Dalton’s films were pretty much excised by the final shooting script.

A third (and potentially fourth) Dalton film continues to be one of the biggest missed opportunities in the Bond series.

As stated in the EON docu: "How do you explain such a thing," in response to the lukewarm reception of Dalton's Bond. Indeed, how do you explain such a thing? A committed actor, a great Bond, a charming man, ... It's ridiculous that Dalton had to be the victim of a mess created by artistically barren suits (and Kevin McClory).

I keep on reading this but is it true? TLD got great reviews and did good box office pretty much everywhere. Dalton was also well received as Bond.

LTK underperformed at the BO in the US but did well at the European box office. And it also got decent reviews almost everywhere. And like every other Bond it still made a profit.

A better start you could argue than Rog's first 2.

It interesting that Sean,Roger's and Daniel's (yet) most successful films(Critical and box office success) were 3rd one's ( GF/TSWLM/SF ) , Pierce was an exception not really fond of TWINE. Can't imagine how it would have turned out if Dalton has been starred in his 3rd outing.
