THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU (2011)

Romantic sci-fi thriller based on a short story by Philip K. Dick, starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. Have not read the original story, so do not know how this compares, but it is a typical Dick story. By that I mean rather original, clever and keeping your attention.
The main themes are destiny and free will. Recommended.

For a Few Dollars More (1965)

It's a nonsense when most people say The Good the Bad and the Ugly is the best of the dollars trilogy when this particular release beats the others out of sight. This time Eastwood and Van Cleef are on the same side and Gian Volonte makes for a truly repulsive villain that radiates menace at every opportunity. Highly recommended viewing that always entertains

Great trilogy but I have to disagree with you on FAFDM being the best one. IMO, A Fistful of Dollars is the best one.

So, I saw The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock, and The Voyage Home. They first two were a little slow paced for me but they had their good moments. I like IV very much, it was the most entertaining.
I wouldn't change Star Wars for them whatsoever, but now at least I understand now why Admiral Kirk yells "Khan", what a Klingon is and why Sheldon Cooper admires Mr Spock. It's ultimately a thing of general knowledge.

The Voyage Home is my favorite among the original movies! The Search for Spock is my second to least favorite, just above the first movie. Although I've only seen the first one once and it's been a few years, maybe I should give it another go. Of the TV shows I've only seen a few episodes of the original Star Trek and they're actually quite good; very old school but that's part of what makes it so fun to watch.

Kicking off a mini-Vincent Price season...

the-masque-of-the-red-death-1964-e1330185885814.jpg%3Fw%3D549

As the red death ravages the local village, the evil, satan-worshiping Prince Prospero (Price), hosts a debauched masked ball within his castle.
There is a Bond connection in this film, M#2 aka Robert Brown, appears as one of Prospero's guards. I could have sworn that Satan was played by Christopher Lee. The voice and build were right, but it turned out not to be Lee.

Maybe they could not get Lee, and decided to cast someone who resembled him?
If they ever make a biopic about Christopher Lee, they should cast Satan in the role.
• QoS, of course! Gets better with each viewing, imo. At least the dramatic scenes do :)

Finally got around to watching Harry Brown starring Michael Caine. Have to say it was very gritty, dark, disturbing at times, but brilliantly acted. Great movie!
• A Nightmare on Elm Street

Went to see this on release in '84 and believe it's the first time I've seen from start to finish in the years since. Bottom line - wasn't missing much

Damn poor film release, and if this was the best of the Freddy films, then you wouldn't want to imagine how poor the subsequent releases must appear. This set the scene for a number of (better) horror titles to come in later years, but the only 'nightmare' I will get out of this was thinking what a waste of money spent on this piece of crap movie

Guess what maybe worked once before, won't always work again

Superman The Movie (1978) (A review and a comparison to Man of Steel.)
S-Main.jpg
This is personal review and is very thought out. These are just my opinions. If you liked "Man of Steel." That's good for you.

I'll admit I've never seen any of the Christopher Reeve Superman films before. In fact I've never really watched a superman movie in full. I remember bits and pieces of Returns but I couldn't tell you what it was about. The only Superman movie I have ever seen in it's entirety up till now was Man of Steel so It's a new experience for me. First off, I enjoyed STM a million times better than MOS.

Superman the movie was probably one of the best movie going experience I've had in recent years. It made me feel all kinds of different emotions. Mostly positives, but I'll get into the negatives very soon. This movie was literally Superman. This is how a Superman movie should be. Fun, colorful and exciting. This is the perfect Superman movie. It had his origins, his time with the Kent's and his transformation into Superman himself. Man of Steel tried very hard to copy this movie but because it had to be a "Dark and Gritty" reboot to cash in on Nolan's universe, it failed miserably.

STM made me feel a wide range of emotions due to the believable fleshed out characters. (Pa Kent's death in STM really hit close to home as it's very similar to my own father's passing. I actually related to Superman in that scene. The same cannot be said for Man of Steel's John Kent death scene.) Everybody in Superman the movie had a purpose and served it well. They had reasons to be there. It also had a better origin story and better suspense. These characters felt real.

In Superman the Movie, I could see the Clark really loved and cared about his adopted family. They had a good relationship. The only flaw with STM is that it didn't get a chance to show more of Clark's relationship with the Kent's. What also made STM great? John William's epic heroic score. It was perfect. It excelled the movie and it enhanced it's scenes. Superman the movie is the definitive Superman movie that didn't need to be remade or rebooted.

After watching this, I can safely say Man of Steel was a product aimed at Nolan Batman fans who may not have liked Superman or even cared about him. Man of Steel is not a Superman movie. It's a poorly written mess of a film that wasted a bunch of good actors in favor of showing of it's CGI disaster porn while riding Nolan's coattails. Man of Steel isn't superman. This is. If you haven't seen either. I suggest you watch this film and avoid Man of Steel altogether.

Superman the Movie.
10/10.

Loved your review @Murdock. Nice to see some new love for a genuinely great film that's so far ahead of that CGI fest that is MoS.

Thank you @WillyGalore, This review has been sitting in my head since last night. I was going to post it last night, but I was way too tired.

I'm not one who hated Man of Steel for the Killing of Zod or the Product placement. (those things didn't bother me.) What bothered me was the lack of care put into the characters. I thought the Cast of Man of Steel was perfect and had very high expectations for the film. But was severely disappointed by it.

My buddy and I watched a few films tonight - all rewatches for me, all new to him:

'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy'

Fantastic slow-burner with an excellent finale. One of the best casts I've ever seen, and the acting doesn't let up from start to finish, it's one hell of a spectacle.

'The House Of The Devil'

Yet another excellent horror addition by Ti West, getting creepier and creepier as it goes on until the unbelievably wild finale. For the longest time, though, I thought the big point of the film was supposed to be a twist/surprise, but it's marketed everywhere: back of my blu-ray case, pretty much tells you what it is in the opening credits, etc. Shame, really.

'Gangster Squad'

Didn't like it as much as I did the first time around, but for what it's worth, it's still an enjoyable movie. Casting is so-so and the acting feels pretty forced at times - especially Sean Penn's accent - but it's still entertaining enough to watch.

While I enjoyed the TTSS TV series I have to say the film was more enjoyable to me. I know Guinness is held in high regard but I felt Gary captured a more layered portrait of Smiley. I know this will be sacrilege to some but to me it was only Firth who didn't entirely erase Ian Richardson's performance from my mind, whereas Cumberbatch, Jones, Strong and Hardy were so much more those characters for me.

Oldman is simply mesmerising and the rest of the cast is stunning, love the slow burn of the film, the mundane feel the way the reveal is played so low key, it's just genius, definitely one of my favourite films of this decade so far without a doubt, Oldman has been fine in these big blockbuster of late, adding some class but Tinker reminded us of a the masterclass that is Gary in full effect, I hoped to see him revisit Smiley at some point, I know he enjoyed the experience and Alfredsen is one hell of a director.

Dallas Buyers Club 2014

The continued renaissance of Matthew McConaughey has become a hot topic, 5/ 5

I will be checking out this film. McConaughey's acting does get better and better. He was real good in both Killer Joe and Lincoln Lawyer.
Saw him recently in another Killer Joe like, low-budget film, Mud (2012). He was quite good, very intense and interesting in that too.
I remember first seeing him in A Time To Kill in theatres (1996) and thinking that this guy was going to be big. I wasn't far off.

Seriously McConaughy is incredible in Dallas Buyers, I've see Mud and he was good in that though I've not seen either Killer Joe or Lincoln Lawyer but I can't see them matching his Ron Woodruff, it's just an exceptional piece of work and someone who's seen 12 Years A Slave and the incredible piece of work from Chiwetel Ejiofor in that film and if he loses to MM I won't feel like he was cheated.

This won't be a case of Oldman losing out to that French guy a few years back when he gave us one of his finest ever performances and lost to a feel good Oscar bait film that most people have forgotten about, flavour of the month, whereas Tinker will age like fine wine.

MM winning for Dallas will not be like that, I won't get started on the undeserving Oscars that Hanks as won when you consider the performance he beat though, that's for another discussion.

@Murdock, I'm right there with ya bro. My favourite superhero movie ever.
I'll be interested in seeing your review of Superman II some time in future. In case you don't know the history, Richard Donner was directing I & II at the same time, but he was kicked off the project after putting the finishing touches on the first one. They finished the second with Richard Lester (Help, Three Musketeers, Four Musketeers) who felt more humour was better. It's still a damn good flick, but not all that it would have been IMO. Brando got cut out of it for legal reasons, but the so-called Richard Donner Cut that's available now added him back in to great effect. Sadly, it's still kind of a glimpse into what may have been more than a perfectly complete movie in and of itself. I generally watch the first half of the theatrical version, then switch to the Donner Cut roughly half way through.

This is no fantasy...

Wow @Artemis81, you liked that mini-series a whole lot more than I did. I thought even the kiddified TV series was better. The guy playing Robo was like 5'4" and I just couldn't buy it. Even with the suit on he was always the shortest one in every scene. And the stuff with the dogs was just plain gross, not over the top crazy like the original film...
I like what they were trying to do, but yes, it's not as good as the original and did enjoy it a little bit better than 2 or 3. Anyways, I guess I can't say the same for...

Robocop Prime Directive: Meltdown

This movie was kinda like meh. Again one of the complaints is the TV budget, but in this one there was Robocop getting beat up by a bunch of chicks, one of the characters staring at a computer the whole time, little things that didn't make any sense, slow motion in certain scenes - if anything it was laughable. The first one had some promising things, but this one was kinda boring. I did like that they are continuing with those media breaks cause I enjoy those.

Caught up with a couple of Oscar contenders at the pictures today. Started off with 'American Hustle'. Took quite a while to get going but was pretty good by the end. First class performances. Followed it with '12 Years A Slave'. Powerful stuff. Unflinchingly harrowing. Of the numerous trailers 'The Monuments Men' looks rather good while chick-flick 'The Other Woman' starring Cameron Diaz looks positively horrendous.

The Raven (1935), with Karloff and Lugosi. Great and very entertaining, but too short. It's one of those films that makes one wish there were a couple scenes more.

Now, for "Angels With Dirty Faces".

nice review of Superman The Movie @murkdock.

I've got the Reeve superman 4 pak dvd. It was real fun burning through the 4 films in order.

SupermanThe Movie, I think can be considered the first of the "modern" big screen colour comic-book blockbusters.
The '70s-'80s Reeve Superman films, plus don't forget the Helen Slater Supergirl spinoff kind of set the table.
Then followed the 4 Batman films with Keaton, Kilmer and Clooney. There's also a Flash feature film in there as well with Billy Zane.
Then came the full blown 2000's comic onslaught of X-men, Spidey, Nolan Batman and everything else that's followed.

I've been rewatching the Harry Potter films lately in a search of delicious nostalgia, and recently viewed The Great Mouse Detective a few nights back as well, an old childhood artifact of mine. It's great to revisit all the stuff that made you happy when you were little, and it's even better when those same things still never fail to make you smile.

I'd never seen this Bogart classic before but I can honestly say that I instantly rank it among my favourites. Superb acting, with a stunningly beautiful Gloria Grahame as a bonus, great dialogue and a surprise ending, this delicious film noir is top of the class.
