In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths double bill.

Totally friggen awesome! Been years since I saw 'In Bruges'. Hilarious films, fantastic dialogues, and a trio of insane performances from Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and a totally bonkers Ralph Fiennes. One of the best cinematic experiences I had when discovering this film on the big screen back in 2008.

As for 'Seven Psychopaths', another hugely hilarious film with epic performances from Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson and Christopher Walken. Great moments of dialogues between characters, especially during the desert situations in the 2nd half. All characters are insanely entertaining.

And I love how in both these films, without warning, sh*t gets very real, bullets start blazing everywhere and blood spurt all over the screen.

Marauders, with Bruce Willis and Dave Bautista . Not a bad thriller with a few twists, but
A little disappointing as I had high hopes for it.

    Truth (2015)

This film is based on the memoirs of Mary Mapes, the one time producer of 60 Minutes Wednesday, who was assigned to famed news anchor Dan Rather. The story focuses on the Killian document controversy, which broke during the 2004 presidential election.

Mapes's team aired a program questioning George W. Bush's service in the Texas National Guard, and alleged that he was given preferential treatment which allowed him to dodge the Vietnam draft. The allegations were based on documents purportedly from Bush's then commanding officer in the Guard, Jerry Killian. As soon as the program aired, the validity of such documents was questioned on the internet. CBS was unable to counter the claims properly due to sloppy initial verification, and ultimately Mapes was fired and Rather was forced to resign in disgrace.

It's a well acted film, and focuses primarily on Mape's character, played feistily by the always excellent Cate Blanchett, in an impassioned performance. The great Robert Redford plays Dan Rather. It really shines light on how important it is to get information substantiated prior to broadcasting or airing it, because even though the allegations may have in fact been true, the careless lack of validation of supporting documents discredited the entire story. Mapes was responsible for breaking the Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse scandal, and even won a Peabody award for her work there, and yet was sacked for the Killian issue.

Barry Lyndon (1975) is just pure excellence. It's like the period piece to end all period pieces to me. The only complaint I have at all is the fact it isn't especially rewatchable. But it's certainly great, and one of Kubrick's finest in my eyes. Should at least remain in my Top 5.

Enter the Dragon first viewing on BD, it's mixed though some shots are crystal clarity though who cares this film is awesome and never looked better. Soon as the film started sent chills and I had a big grin, still the best of the genre for me.

Love this film. Can remember seeing clips of it on the news when Bruce Lee's death was announced. Still think Fist of Fury (aka The Chinese Connection in the good ole US of A) is his best, but love ETD. Blu-ray is excellent.

    Extraction (2015)

I managed to get this Bruce Willis actioner on the cheap and decided to put it in the player yesterday. I wasn't expecting much at all, because it seemed like a straight to dvd/blu ray release.

Unfortunately, it proved to be more disappointing than I could have imagined in my worst nightmares. What a waste of resources! Willis was only in it for about 20 minutes tops, so it was false advertising in a way. The lead was some chump called Kellan Lutz. I hadn't seen this expressionless block of wood in anything before, and so did a quick google search 'on the fly' and realized his claim to fame was the Twilight films - says it all really. The teenagers really have to get better taste. Gina Carano is also in this film, and she sincerely looks embarrassed to have been coaxed into it.

In summary this is a bit of a cheap remake of DH5, but with daddy being the one kidnapped, and son coming to the rescue. Apart from horrendous acting, it also boasts a terribly annoying drone of a score.

Please don't waste your money or your time with this, because I want all of you to at least still have some hope for DH6, and believe me, this PoS will kill it.

Have to say i had my doubts as this is the first viewing i have had. Got to say i thoroughly enjoyed it, although to me it had a slow start. The final battle and equipment the Marines had i thought was awesome! :-bd

@bondjames, have you checked out Bruce Willis in the film Hostage? From what I remember it's the same deal, a mission to rescue a family, but with Bruce as the rescuer. It plays almost like an Elseworld's version of McClane if he moved to California with his wife and settled in with the LAPD there. In my memory, I look at it fondly, so I think you'll like it too.

@0BradyM0Bondfanatic7, I actually have seen Hostage many years back and did enjoy it. Ben Foster was pretty frightening. That's something I may want to get a hold of and watch again. Thanks for reminding me.

No, Extraction isn't really like that at all. It's more of a cheap rip off of DH5 (not a film that needed to be copied) and Bourne (lots of pontificating by CIA types behind computer screens). Son is out to save daddy this time and both are skilled in combat and gun use. Absolutely awful and cheap.

'Hostage' is a very cool film, and it shows that french directors work very well with British/Americans action stars (other examples being Liam Neeson in Taken, Jason Statham in the Transporter films and Mel Gibson in Blood Father).

Noticed there is a collection of Bruce's other films on BD, was hoping for a box set on that format though box sets I have found are not suitable. I will upgrade all his films to BD now, love all his films when they are not cut to pieces :) Hard to choose between the films he did, ETD brought it all together and seminal so edges it for me. If only Game of Death was completed...

Every time I catch Enter the Dragon on TV I look out for when Jackie Chan pops in as an extra to get his butt kicked by Bruce during the stealth sequence/fight that leads into the big finale. Jackie shares a funny story of shooting it here, and how he got a bit too close to out of Bruce's moves:

Just goes to show how an intimidating man like Bruce was just a big softie and truly cared about/for the people he worked with to choreograph some of the greatest fights we'll ever see on film.

Bruce would be so immeasurably proud of them if he were alive today. I can picture him watching one of Jackie's movies in the 90s and thinking, "Wow, to think that is the young man who started out getting knocked out by me."

With The Shining (1980) watched (one of my all-time favorite films), only two more to go in the Kubrick-thon. I'll post the ranking once it's done.

Last time we went in to depth with Kubrick on here, and I watched everything he did (even his early shorts) I mentioned that THE SHINING was the one that has improved the most over time. Back upon release it was one of my least favorite of his films, but it has sure aged well for me. Not a Top Tier Kubrick, but not one of the weakest (and even the weakest Kubricks: KILLER'S KISS, FULL METAL JACKET and EYES WIDE SHUT, are still examples of superior filmmaking).

Maybe since it was the first film of Kubrick's I saw, I have a personal bias towards it. And I agree with the last statement; even Kubrick's weakest films are better than a lot of other stuff I've seen. I'll be sure to post my updated ranking on here and on my Kubrick thread when I'm done; at least one spot changed.

Here were my last Kubrick rankings, from about two years ago. Time for a rewatch. If I remember correctly, @FoxRox , we agreed on the Top Eight or So, but in different order.

    1. DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB (1964)
    2. SPARTACUS (1960)
    3. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968)
    4. THE KILLING (1956)
    5. PATHS OF GLORY (1957)
    6. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971)
    7. THE SHINING (1980)
    8. BARRY LYNDON (1975)
    9. LOLITA (1962)
    11. FULL METAL JACKET (1987)
    12. EYES WIDE SHUT (1999)
    13. FEAR AND DESIRE (1953)
    14. KILLER’S KISS (1955)

I feel that those Top Six are among the greatest films ever made.

You should follow suit and have a marathon yourself! It's quite a treat, seeing all of them in order. I find it interesting you have Spartacus all the way at #2; very high! I like it a lot myself, but it's at #8 on my list.

    @Bridleson,

I'm so pleased to see SPARTACUS high up your list. In my experience, many people rate it at the bottom of their Kubrick ranking, simply because Kubrick was last-minute hired for it. It wasn't his baby right from the start. Yet the way I see it, his fingerprint is all over it, in virtually every scene. Never mind the fact that Douglas was a pain in the ass and had planned for Kubrick to simply kiss his feet and do what he wanted. There's enough of Kubrick in the film to make it proudly stand next to the other films in your top 6. Incidentally, THE KILLING, 2001 and PATHS OF GLORY are indeed amazing films.

One of the more difficult ones for me to position in my own ranking is THE SHINING. It's a great horror film, one of the few that actually helped me to cathartically dispel some of my fears when I first saw it. On the other hand, amidst so many special, unique films, THE SHINING often feels a little more mundane to me, if that makes sense. Don't get me wrong, I love that film; its brilliant. I just never really know if it belongs in the top 3 or in the middle or lower down the list still.

Interesting post. I agree with both of you Spartacus is great, but it falls pretty much in the middle of my list, away from the lowest and highest sections (#8). Still, that means I enjoy it a lot, considering I enjoy every Kubrick film to at least some extent. I have had so much fun going through all these films again; maybe my favorite type of film marathon to have. There's just so much variety.

I agree Bruce was such a wise man, a great philosopher in his own way. I watched the documentary Bruce in his own words... it's footage of interviews of Bruce dedicated to his children. Bruce died before I was born though could not help feel saddened watching it, easy to forget how young Bruce was and what else he would have accomplished also Brandon I feel would have done great things.

    @Creasy47 @bondjames @doubleoego

Just came back from... Bastille Day (2016)

Basically 'Die Hard 3 or 4' , set in Paris, with Idris Elba and Richard Madden (Robb Stark in Game of Thrones) instead of Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson/Justin Long. Non stop action, with Elba punching/shooting everyone that annoys him (brutally too) while showcasing immense masculinity and badassery. Very nice chemistry with his temporary sidekick (Madden), and they have plenty of one liners. Highly recommended if you want an Euro-style action film that acts as a 'Bond audition' for Idris Elba (even if he has no chance of getting the part, he really went all-out here, and is a joy to watch).

@DarthDimi if you want to see what Idris Elba would be like as 007, in an enjoyable discount version of Die Hard 4, you will like it. :) Think of it as TND - non stop action, plenty of humour with Elba punching a lot of people, and a cool dynamic between him and his sidekick.

Great to hear @DaltonCraig007. I can't wait, but may have to watch it on blu because I think it will be a straight to vid release on this side of the pond. I'm not surprised Elba nails it - I wouldn't have expected anything less from him.

@bondjames Elba has his own version of what Craig did in QOS (when he knocked the guy down off the motorcycle) by grabbing someone's neck from a motorcycle as the culprit is trying to escape and plummeting his ass on the ground. And Elba has several other very cool fights which includes him giving several nasty punches straight in the face of goons.

@DaltonCraig007, Elba definitely has the physique and machismo to be more than credible in this sort of role. I'm glad he's finally got his crack at it, and he deserved it.

Now if only those knuckleheads would get on with releasing it stateside!
