I love Towne and Fincher's commentary on Chinatown. Glad I got the Region A version it's not on the Region B, the Brits getting shafted again infact I think it might be free of any special features.

Definitely one of my favourite films of all time and one of the definitive detective stories of our time, everyone is on top of their game here and it's just a masterpiece.

It could be argued that Nicholson has given better performances although I like him here and would regard this one of his best but I don't think he's been in a better film personally, this film is a joy to behold and like Se7en the ending still retains it's power

I was watching the extras on this only recentely and Jack says that Polanski got him to to speed his delivery up and it's noticable, Nicholson is famous for talking quite slowly, Jack says due to amount of dialogue and story it was needed, a nice change from his usual style.

    SUDDEN IMPACT

Fourth Dirty Harry outing is one of my favorites. Arguably the most violent Harry film and some might say one that doesn't always feel like a Dirty Harry movie. Reminds me a bit of I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE.. With Sandra Locke going after a gang that raped her and her sister, and killing them off one at a time, Harry investigates. Next to the the first film, this probably has the most quotable dialogue.
In 1991 Tim Dalton appeared on the Arsenio Hall show and talked about being a huge Eastwood fan. Since then I wondered if his Bond in LTK was slightly influenced by Harry: the squinting, scowling, sideburns and unkempt hair that always looks like it's due for a trim.
The first film is my favorite in the series, but this comes a close second.

Funnily enough, that's exactly what i thought the last time I saw Dirty Harry. Dalton does almost echo old Clint at times in terms of his mannerisms and expressions.

Also, its well known that the script for LTK was loosely based on YoJimbo, which was of course re-made into A Fistful of Dollars.

Kingsman. Went in expecting to really enjoy it, but for me, it really didn't live up to the hype.

Villain starring Richard Burton. It didn't impress.

    Lord of War (2005)

An absolute favorite of mine. Stunning plot that keeps you totally invested in the film from the first scene to the last scene. Nicolas Cage delivers a career defining performance. The soundtrack is phenomenal, as is the supporting cast. Most scenes contain some of the best quotes and dialogues I can think of. The film contains an out-of-this-world intro (the bullet-camera). I was too young when I first discovered the film on the big screen to fully appreciate it, but I knew it was something special. As I get older, and the more I watch it, the film keeps getting better and better.
  • The Empire Strikes Back greatest film ever made,

Krull first time I have watched this in HD looks phenomenal.

Gamera Super Monster Yes, I know, saying this is not a good movie is an understatement. Half of it is made of stock shots from the seven previous movies (all the battles against the monsters plus the destruction of Tokyo from the first one, plus scenes from Yamato and Galaxy Express 999), the rest is badly acted and full of clichés. It was obvious that the franchise was on its last leg and deserved to be euthanazied quickly. Thankfully, some 15 years later, it came back in great form. But more on that next week.

    Eastern Promises (2007)

Unusual Cronenberg thriller regarding the Russian underworld in London.

An engrossing film although the film's big revelation does fall a bit flat.

Excellent acting from Viggo Mortensen, Naomi Watts and Vincent Cassell. But Armin Mueller-Stahl steals the film as the slimy, devious head of the family.

Some over the top gore as you would expect from Cronenberg and featuring a brutal naked fight in a sauna!

Chinatown is brilliant thriller, with that shocker ending!
Speaking of the excellent 'Seven', apparently test audiences were so upset at THAT ending, that the makers were going to change it...but Brad Pitt insisted on the original!

The ending in the original Chinatown script had Mrs Mulwray shooting her father dead at the climax. It was Polanski who changed it to the much more tragic ending.

  • Southland Tales A almost impenatrable flawed masterpiece, I applaud this film for its sheer ambition.

    THE VAMPIRE BAT (1933)

In the mood for this public domain pre-code Horror flick. Serial killings going on in a town in Germany and vampirism is suspected. With Lionel Atwill, Fay Wray (the same year she did KING KONG), Melvyn Douglas, and Dwight Frye in a Renfield type role.
Feels more like an early murder mystery: static, talky, yet very cool. If only Bela were in this I'd probably pop it in more often.

Side Effects (2013) Steven Soderbergh's Hitchcockian thriller. Rooney Mara is on good form as a troubled wife of a newly released criminal. Spiralling into depression she visits a psychiatrist (Jude law) and the intrigue begins. A slow build to a gripping second act - and although the final third is twisting fun - it all gets a little far fetched. Soderbergh is channeling his own 90s work of his obscure thriller 'The Underneath'. Side effects is a solid, good direction but nothing amazing.

I just watched Lord Of War (2005) again. What a brilliant film.

I was wondering if fans of Denis Villeneuve ( @Creasy47, @DarthDimi, @bondjames, @0BradyM0Bondfanatic7 ) could imagine him doing a sequel to this? Only if he had the perfect idea on where to take the story forward. Nicolas Cage's Yuri Orlov is one of my favorite characters, and I'd like to see where he is now, after the ending of 'Lord of War' 11 years ago now. I'm sure Villeneuve would not ruin the original film with the usual Hollywood bullsh*t, meaning Orlov's wife, kid and parents should not appear in this potential sequel, as they are 100% out of his life at the ending of the 2005 film. I'd love to see what kind of intro Villeneuve could think of to rival the bullet-camera one from the 1st film.
