Terminal some scenes between Margot Robbie and Simon Pegg were OK, though this film is pretty dreadful.

The trailers looked pretty amateurish to me, didn't convince me to check it out.

It's done Max Irons no favours, I suggested him as a potential Bond, Max is awful in this film.

This is by far the best MI movie. Completely insane action. As far as excitement goes, nobody does it better right now. Actually the first time I have thoroughly enjoyed and been impressed by an MI entry. Two and a half hours flew by.

    Hoe did (not) India look?

It looked spectacular! Makes me want to go there.

    The Meg (2018)
    C0jn8aF.jpg
I'm a huge fan of creature horror films laced with a bit of comedy. Lake Placid, Anaconda, Deep Blue Sea and such-like. I also love a good shark scare (in fairness, who doesn't?), and more recently enjoyed The Shallows and 47 Meters Down. Finally, I'm a big Statham fan, although I've hardly seen most of his flicks. So you can appreciate that I was really looking forward to this entry, released to coincide with the recently completed Discovery Channel Shark Week.

Sadly, this failed to live up to (stupidly & nostalgically inflated) expectations, and instead confirmed my worst fears and trepidations about the state of Hollywood. As with many blockbuster films I see in the theatre these days, the now omnipresent CGI was rather poorly done (some scenes actually reminded me of Jaws 3D), and this took me out of things. The last film I saw in the theatre was the magnificent MI:Fallout, so I concede that I may have been recently spoiled by live action done the proper way. Additionally, this film continued a trend I've seen lately of injecting Asian actors into films in a rather overt, pandering fashion. Now, I'm an equal opportunity fellow, but I expect them to at least be able to act and deliver their lines convincingly. Such is not the case here I'm afraid. If that wasn't bad enough, we also have children being used shamefully to elicit an emotional reaction from the audience. In fairness, it's not just the Asian actors who are lousy. We also have poor, cliched characters, like the rich profiteering venture capitalist, but in this case seriously lacking the charm and charisma of Samuel Jackson (in Deep Blue Sea) or Oliver Platt (in Lake Placid). Throw in an unfunny black character (named DJ in this rather than LL. Cool J, but really more reminiscent of the disappointing Justice Smith in Jurassic World 2) and all boxes appear to have been ticked. All a bit sad really, but I noticed some viewers reacting in a positive fashion, so I suppose it works for some who aren't as deeply cynical as I have become. This is a Chinese co-production, so I can partially understand the business rationale, as it will probably clean up over there.

It's not all bad and I am being a bit harsh. There are some genuinely frightening and tense moments here and there (even if they are few and far between). Statham rocks like he always does and carries the film with his charisma and muscles. How does this guy do it? For 51, he's in immensely good shape... in fact too good perhaps. The shark really never had a chance.

    The Meg

This is kind of an interesting film. Ienjoyed it, While it's definitely not Jaws it's a strong film that in my opinion does try to mix the tone of films like 47 meters down and the tone of the various sci fi original shark films and while it make it uneven it does work. Though one thing I noticed (mind you I haven't seen a recent horror film since 2004's Alien Vs predator but I felt at moments they kept startling the audience too much like there would be a scare then relaxing then another scare then relax then a scare then the scene would end... I would of liked a few more relaxing moments (a complaint my wife had about the recent Mission impossible) which makes me wonder if Hollywood and indeed us as consumers are afraid to let a film breath a bit..

Going by Now playings binary recommend or not recommend I would definitely give it a strong recommend for shark film fans and a weak recommend for just fans of summer blockbusters

That is all I can say without spoiling the film
Ok I kind of have to go beat by beat because I have so many questions

    1. We begin in a sub with Jonas Taylor rescuing people when a Meg attacks it I thought there were no Megs in the regular oceans so where did that one come from

    2. the crew on the mini sub are really well done and I enjoyed them as they talk and act how I would in that situation

    3. I love the Thailand stuff (perhaps it should be a location for 007 again in the future) thought the Yankee hat seemed out of place are American Baseball teams really big in Thailand? I don't follow baseball or how other countries view baseball so I have no idea so excuse my ignorance but that took me out of the movie slightly

    4. Jason Statham is fantastic I will say this if I had to choose between him and IDris Elba for 007 I would pick Jason luckily there are actor who are White and have more charisma and talent then either Statham or Elba but still..

    5. So is Jason still in love with his ex wife?

    6. I don't get why Takay ( I think that was his name the guy from Hawaii 5-0) had to die He could of gotten into the second sub and the shark would still of attacked the first

    7. Why does the billionaire think the way to make money is to Go down and see the Meg again this makes NO sense to me as just having proof of a second ocean and the fact that the Meg is not extinct is enough to get him in the history books alone

    8. the dorsal fin on the vaccum cleaner or whatever that robot was.. was kind of cool

    9. How did the meg not break throught the structure I understand the director isn't going to kill an 8 year old in 2018 but still....

    10. pissed we did not see the poachers get eaten

    11. enjoyed the Tracker/Killing of the first meg sequence a lot

    12. WHY WOULD THEY STICK AROUND? I get they assumed only one came up but seriously every person who was sane would do the celebratory stuff back on base NOT where they killed one

    13. The Billionaire is even more stupid then imagined how on earth could someone sue him for a Meg attack HELL how could that even hold up in court Honestly I would love to see that not get laughed out of court.

    14. the way the billionaire died is Part of my complaint of scare relax scare relax scare style of filming the scene had me on edge but too much in my opinion

    15. I swear the crew destroys every vehicle they are in what were their jobs before this film bringing Gilligan and the crew on a three hour tour?

    16. Loved the Pippin Jaws reference

    17. this should be higher on the list but the way the Doctor kills himself by shark is so incredibly stupid

    18. the beach scenes at the end were great however if you expect this to be whole movie you will be disappointed

    19. the way Statham kills the "final" meg is hilariously awesome

    20. Why Is he in love with the Chinese girl and not his ex wife?

Loved the movie and will see the eventual sequel though I hope they do something smart with the premise and not have a lazy reason for the sequel
    1. Lazy of course being a third one broke through the same time as the first two but didn't attack anyone for some reason

    2. one of the megs was pregnant and it's the baby that is now gonna attack

I would much prefer that either

    A) they have to go back down resulting in the same thing to happen again

    or

    B) for Technobable reasoning the Cool layer is heated up again allowing for another meg to pass through

    Top Gun (1986)
    l9lykQF.jpg

I'd heard a lot about this film (directed by the late Tony Scott) over the years but for some reason or other had never seen it before. Fortunately it was on the telly yesterday, and so I was able to finally get to it. This is a very enjoyable (although typically mid-80's) romance actioner, replete with the cliched cheese that this decade is famous for. Cruise is near perfect as cocky hot shot pilot Pete Mitchell, aka "Maverick", who is enlisted in the Navy's elite flying school due to his skills. The top graduate from this school every year is named "Top Gun". Pilots are also allowed to hone their skills by attempting acrobatic and dangerous training maneuvers, and also by engaging live with Cold War enemy aircraft MiGs over the Pacific Ocean.

When on terra firma, Maverick woos Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood, an instructor played by Kelly McGillis. Cruise and McGillis have pretty good chemistry, and their scenes are electric, even if the dialogue they are forced to spout is a bit cringy. He also competes with fellow trainee "Iceman" (Val Kilmer, looking especially good here before his health issues) for the coveted Gun trophy and finds answers to his father's (also a pilot) unexplained death.

The film boasts an excellent supporting cast, including Anthony Edwards, Tom Skerrit, Tim Robbins, Michael Ironside and Meg Ryan (in one of her earliest roles). I think this film was famous for its aerial sequences, and they certainly don't disappoint, even 32 years later. Some of the photography in the air is truly stunning, and up there with the best of the era (like Eastwood's Firefox). It's also got a great soundtrack anchored by two famous atmospheric tracks - Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins and Take My Breath Away by Berlin. The film seems to have set the template which producers Simpson/Bruckheimer later employed throughout most of the 80s and 90s - the DNA is quite evident.

I gather Cruise is making a sequel for release next year, and I can only imagine we are going to be in for a visual feast to rival Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk when it comes to aerial combat, knowing his perfectionism and commitment. It's hard to believe that this film was made when Roger Moore was just finishing up as James Bond. Cruise really is a legend to have been at the top of this game for so long.

That's the reason for the trend and helps explain why Hollywood cinema has been getting worse and worse. Nowadays films with above-average budgets are designed for the international market, especially China's, and often funded by it. Sophisticated films rarely do as well overseas as big, dumb, CGI-action-fests, so that's what's produced, and putting Chinese actors into them is a safe move. It's an example of globalization at work. Not that Hollywood was taking the high road before--after television ate into the audience the studios began designing films for 17 year old Americans. But now they can appeal to the lowest common denominator worldwide, and it's very low indeed. In another decade or two every film genre aside from action will have left movies for TV, and action movies themselves will just as often be made in China and have a few American actors thrown in to appeal to us.

The Hunted is awesome I have it on BD, William Friedkin at his best. I rank it up there with First Blood in the genre.

Agreed! Charade has often been called the best Hitchcock film never directed by Hitchcock. It's one of the most purely pleasurable Hollywood films of its era, and its blend of sophistication, macabre violence, stylish cloak-and-dagger intrigue, and martini-dry wit should appeal to many Bond fans. The film is in the public domain and has been released many times, but viewers should stick with the Criterion Blu-Ray for maximum quality.

You're quite right. It's more than the Chinese too, although they are the largest growing force. Dumbed down narrative allows for easier translation into foreign languages generally. Series like Bond, which rely on crisp dialogue, wit and a nuanced sense of humour may suffer the most. Action driven spectacle requires little subtitling after all.

But I think eventually China won't be such a cash cow once it loses its obsession with Hollywood movies. We already see movies like The Mermaid, which no one has heard of, but made over 500 million dollars in China. I think Hollywood needs to put more emphasis on making good movies which push the boundaries and present exciting new experiences, then people will make the effort to go and watch it. Right now, Hollywood is only worried about not having a flop, and doing everything to protect against that. That's why we see so many sequels, and reboots of franchises which frankly don't need it (Ghostbusters).

They've certainly become risk averse, that's for sure. The increasing costs of production are a part of the reason. As an example, the early Bond films were far more profitable and had significantly higher ROI than the current ones, despite the newer ones grossing more. So to a degree it's understandable. Higher ticket prices also keep people away, as do new technologies which allow for a more exciting home viewing experience. I remember the days when one had to wait at least six months for a home release. These days, the turnaround is much faster, so if one isn't in a big rush, couch potato enjoyment awaits sooner.

Furthermore, and sadly, some pretty poor Hollywood films survive and end up being profitable purely because of their foreign (and in many cases, Chinese) grosses. The Meg will be one of those.
