The DF version looks much better. Why can't the studios do better ?
One of many cameos, yes. :) The voice is unmistakable. Daisy's face speaks volumes about what she was thinking. "Oh me god, tha' was James Bond. I've got to call me mum!"
What were your previous rankings ?
1 Star Wars
2 Empire
3 Return of the Jedi for me.
Empire
A New Hope
Return of the Jedi
The first two film are at such a high level for me, the third has great moments certainly the ending though I do find Return of the Jedi very uneven.
Some scenes look very cinematic some look considerably cheaper, the 4K version of the film makes it all the more glaring. Its almost as if the film was directed by two people lol
Anyone been on this ? Looks great
My Previous Rankings were;
1. Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. Return Of The Jedi
Needless to say, I was surprised how much Jedi had managed to shoot up the list this time around.
I used to share that opinion, but there was just something about this last viewing that made me enjoy it more than I normally would. Nostalgia probably played a role too, because Jedi was the first film from the Original Trilogy I saw.
To me, it's a 6hr movie in three parts- it's ALL my favourite! And Mandalorian season 2 finale is right there beside it.
Interesting reading some of the viewpoints on fandom. I love Star Wars. It was by far the biggest impact on me film wise as a kid in the early 80s. But I agree that parts of the fan base are embarrassing.
To me SW is the films and the mandolorian. I have no interest In Comics or novels etc
I think Mando excels where the sequels and prequels fail. It prioritises story and characters over special effects and “emotion”
Which brings me to another frustration I have with modern film and tv. Why does being made to cry the yardstick by which people measure entertainment these days? I hear it all the time “this was so emotional” etc. You can’t escape it from cookery programmes to sport to film... I like to be moved emotionally if it’s been wel written, earned from a story perspective etc but it now seems to be used as a crutch for weak storytelling. The mando got nostalgia just right for me. It’s not reliant on it to the point that it would all collapse if you removed it (although tbh I can live without boba fett in it)
JJ Abrams particularly seems to think unearned hollow emotion is a substitute for story and character. And The sequels got worse in each instalment to the point where ROS is almost the nadir of the franchise.
That said the behind the scenes doc that’s on YouTube about Rise of Skywalker is really excellent.
The original films were just swashbuckling adventures in space. For this reason I really rather enjoyed Solo. Rogue one is good but again no characters. I loved the Force Awakens because it felt like a relief it felt like cinema rather than a cartoon like the prequels
The entire franchise has been held up for 40 years by one film - the Empire strikes back - until mando.
Yep.
I respectfully agree to your disagreement.
Anyway, my ranking of all the movies:
1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. The Force Awakens
4. Return of the Jedi
5. The Rise of Skywalker
6. The Last Jedi
7. Rogue One
8. Revenge of the Sith
9. Solo
10. Attack of the Clones
11. The Phantom Menace
Although I dislike the sequels, I respect your views and ranking! Thank you for sharing!
Hopefully I won’t get flack for this, but my rankings are below;
1. Return of the Jedi
2. Empire Strikes Back
3. Clone Wars (2003) (Counting this mini-series as a film; highly recommended for anyone who hasn’t seen it!)
4. A New Hope
5. Revenge of the Sith
6. Rogue One
7. The Phantom Menace
8. Attack of the Clones
9. Solo
10. The Force Awakens
11. The Last Jedi
12. The Rise of Skywalker
13. Clone Wars (2008) (Not a fan of the film; the TV series on the other hand is amazing)
That's really nice. If I didn't literally grow up on these movies I might have had more of a choice of which are best. As it is, I do not. Putting any post-1983 movie above others is heretical nonsense worthy of no less than the Emperors's 'Beams'!
Pretty much how I viewed it. Before the ST came out I was pretty much prepared to focus on the new generation and that the older one would take a backseat in some fashion. I never set myself up for the idea that Luke would continue as the protagonist, so perhaps that’s why I was actually more open to his handling in TLJ than a lot of other fans were. IMO, that film made him an even richer character than he already was, and his scenes on Crait remain one of my favorite Luke moments of all time.
The only thing regretful about the handling of he OT characters was something that was completely out of everyone’s hands which is Leia. Really would have liked to see how her character panned out in TROS if Fisher hadn’t passed away. I know there’s discarded drafts that leaked, but those were just ultimately drafts as in work in progress.
The Critic Reviews of The Last Jedi on Metascore is bizarre. 84 ??????????
I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it’s undeniably well made, no matter how much critics may have loved it. There a lot of issues with TLJ, and that’s even when one does ignore the issues with lore.
What do you think of it ?
5/10
I don't like the story and i'm not a big star wars fan , just a bond fan and movie fan.
Such as?
As a film I’d give it a 7.
On the scale of Star Wars films it’s a 8. Just to give it more context here’s my rankings along with how I’d rate each film on a scale of 1-10:
1. The Empire Strikes Back - 10/10
2. A New Hope - 9/10
3. The Last Jedi - 8/10
4. The Force Awakens - 7/10
5. Return of the Jedi - 7/10
6. The Rise of Skywalker - 6/10
7. Revenge of the Sith - 5/10
8. The Phantom Menace - 4/10
9. Attack of the Clones - 2/10
As for the non-saga films, I’d probably give Rogue One a 5 and Solo a 7. They’re the Star Wars films I’ve seen the least amount of times. Nothing about them compels me to revisit them much. I’ve only seen each of them twice. Once in theaters and once on Netflix streaming.
Anyway, I think this video makes a good case for why TLJ is good, and gets into the division among fans.
Well I respect your disagreement/reasoning, it’s been a while since I saw TLJ, so my mind is a bit fuzzy in some regards, but I’ll check the video out at some point. I can’t promise that I’ll be won over afterwards though.
I spent many years on forums discussing how the prequels should have really been done. I totally get fans who have expectations that are never met.
Problem with killing off snoke is that you have lost a major antagonist. It would be like darth Vader force choking the emperors hologram in Empire. We know nothing of him, or what his plans are, or why he exists in relation to the story other than he is bad.
That for me is bad storytelling.
Finn could be taken out of the film and it would have zero consequence on the story
Also like milking the space cow tits could have been left in the cutting room floor.
Not knowing enough about characters is Iess engaging.
Vader was Obi wants best friend, but was seduced by the dark side. We know that from one tiny scene that explains context, relationship. We learn more about star wars universe in that one scene in Obi wans house than we do in the whole of the last Jedi
I think that’s a major flaw in the prequels. It’s a different bad guy in each one. Darth maul, count dooku, general grievous. We know nothing of these people so it’s just rent a baddie.
