Yes, as some have said. Us being Bond fans here, eventually got to find out too much about the film SP before release.
Whereas, apart from seeing the trailer, and seeing the new characters, and that H.Ford is in the movie, i know jack shit else about this film, and that's how i want it to be, so i can go and really enjoy the film.

Well it doesn't help when Bond films have been releasing nearly two weeks early. Spoilers get out. It's a poor choice sadly. I know Star Wars is being released a day early in some places, but it's still a global release for the most part. Wish every big film did this. Especially Bond.

I wish I could have been there. I almost feel bad being critical of it as I know it was a defining movie for a generation. I just wonder what more cynical adults thought about it back in '77. I know that some of the cast/production team had doubts when making it and that it was pretty much rubbished before release.
I saw it back in '77, but only saw it towards the backend of its first theatrical run as I had grown tired of all the endless clips on TV and constant hype that surrounded it. So one afternoon, I decided to go see it, fully prepared to pour scorn on the movie. Of course I was wrong, the movie was brilliant and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was by this stage in my middle teens, what publishers now refer to as an YA. For me, it was never Bond vs SW or any other movie; I can embrace all forms of great moviemaking. At 16 I was both a huge Eastwood fan and a Bond fan. It's never been a case of either/or for me; everything can happily co-exist in my world, so long as it's good.

What you might find more shocking is that I thought Empire Strikes Back a rather disappointing sequel to the original. I guess I wasn't sold on the way the story evolved and changed from Luke being in love with the Princess to now being a backseat passenger to Han. The brother/sister reveal thing didn't work for me either. Also, I can't say I wasn't too happy about the "I'm your father" revelation business at the end. It just felt too hokey to me. That's how I felt when I saw TESB in 1980 and before I saw TRotJ - boy oh boy, that movie was spectacularly awful. A terrible way to end the trilogy. It made me appreciate TESB that much more.

But to answer you question, the original SW was, and still is, the best.

None of the showings at my cinema are sold out, so I'll try to get hold of any available seat by arriving atleast 90 minutes early! If it fails, I'll do the same at every single of the 10+ showings today until I can buy a ticket.

Well, the critics at the UK newspapers have been giving the new Star Wars film 5 stars, and are saying this film is terrific, and brings back the golden days of the original SW films.
Good, i'am definitely going to see this film.

Looks like SW will be a $2+ billion film. Can it reach Avatar, we will have to wait ans see!

Ticket bought, I am seeing the film in 20 minutes!
  • Man... so jealous of you right now!! I hope you understand it's your duty to post a spoiler-free review when you get out!

Before today, my greatest movie going experiences were the 3 'Lord of the Rings' films, the first Harry Potter, Casino Royale, The Dark Knight and Inception.

'The Force Awakens' has blown those experiences out of the water and into Mars' orbit. I have never heard an audience cheer so loudly when the Main Titles started. The whole crowd (me included) gave a standing ovation at the end that lasted a couple of minutes.

SPECTRE, Rogue Nation, Fury Road... are nothing, and I mean friggen nothing next to this film.

For the rest of my life I will cherish these 2 hours with a crowd that was in absolute delight from the first to the very last second.

Everything was perfect. I can find no fault, I literally have tears coming out right now just thinking of the film.
  • So happy to hear! My dumb work schedule is keeping me from seeing it Friday-- I had just finally come to peace with seeing it once the crowd dies down. Now I'm not so sure, lol! I love fun movie crowds like that!

So it's safe to say we're in for a GOOD trilogy, huh?

    So you liked it?

Great, everyone is seeing this film. It premiered here today as well, but I will be seeing it with my son next week during the holiday. In 3d, it looked good in the trailer I saw.

Great, honest post @Bondsum. I like the original Star Wars and think elements of it are great (namely the things I mentioned in my list), but I do think the performances are kind of ropey sometimes. Guiness is (perhaps predictably) the standout and gives the film a real gravitas, but I also enjoy the way Cushing hams up his lines (namely "evacuate? In our moment of triumph? I think you over-estimate their chances").

I saw the original 3 again over the last weekend and Empire just felt like the more meaty film to me. The performances seem better aswell.

I actually quite like Jedi. The first half hour or so is quite dull but a lot of the stuff in the last third of the film is very good I feel.

I very much liked it, @Thunderfinger

@Master_Dahark I won't comment on your question until everyone here has seen the movie. I am more knowledgable on James Bond than Star Wars so I will let the bigger fans say what they think about where this new trilogy is going.

Here is a question for the Star Wars fans. I'm planning to give them all a watch now that the new one is coming out, but I was wondering if the original trilogy exists in good quality without the stuff that's been added later on.

TFA is really resonating with a lot of people and it's getting unanimous praise. SW fans can rejoice. I wasn't sure if I was going to catch this movie at the cinema but I can confidently say I will and will be doing so either tomorrow or Friday. This really is the big one.
  • @GoldenGun the first round of DVD special editions each had a bonus DVD with the unaltered movies in decent quality. It's hardly even mentioned on the cover, that's the funny part!

To the best of my knowledge, the unaltered version is not on Bluray... yet

On DVD, yes. Blu-Ray in the works, probably next year.

Seeing it tomorrow. Never really been a SW fan so I'm hoping this might draw me into the series.

I think TFA will be the GE of Star Wars, in the sense that both will have brought a sh*t load of new fans to these franchises.

I think i'm going to follow the path of @Bondsum and wait until the hype dies down a bit before I watch TFA

This new SW film has really got people hooked to go and see it, hasn't it?

I like SW, but i'am not a SW fanatic, and i thought the second trilogy was too much concerned with the politics in the story, and there didn't seem to be much joy in these films.

However, as i'am getting on a bit now, i do remember the massive impact the original films had. I was a teenager when SW came out, and this film just blew everyone away.
The reason i will be seeing the film, is because i hope the new film captures the spirit of the original SW, and from what i've read on early reviews, this new film just does that.
Plus, seeing the return of the original characters, and watching the space battles in 3D, is a major plus point in wanting to see the film.

So there......May the force be with you. :)

Walked past the cinema today and there were planets hanging from the ceiling and lasers across the lobby.

A nine year old neighbour was there with her father, and she got a little scared by the living, awfully breathing Darth Vader who was there also, but then he told her he was really good at baking cookies, haha, and she wasn t scared of him no more.

I seem to be the only one who has yet to notice it.

8pm tomorrow the fun begins, I seriously can't wait.

I don't care it cleaves to the OT so much as seems this is where criticism is most. It would have been far too ballsy and risky to give us something totally original with the first one out the gate.

The next episode I can see being where it will get more daring so it it is like the new New Hope so be it, as long as they don't continue down this path going forward.

We've got Rogue One this time next year and that certainly look interesting and in some ways even more intriguing than TFA, plus Mads is aboard.

Star Wars starts in 15 minutes time at my local cinema in the UK (i.e. 5 minutes after midnight). I won't be there, but i noticed it was a sell out in the theater, based on the tickets sold for seats. :-O

I've tried to avoid reviews but what I did read suggested it was primarily original, with a measured tip of the hat to the past. "I have a good feeling about this". I'll also be seeing tomorrow. Hope you enjoy.

Well, the movie was crap, but hopefully
Han Solo's death means Ford is going to work on a new Indiana Jones movie
