I'm surprised at the rankings too @pachazo. Earlier this week it was sounding like the best one since Empire.
2 THE FORCE AWAKENS
3 STAR WARS
4 RETURN OF THE JEDI
5 REVENGE OF THE SITH
6 THE PHANTOM MENACE
7 ROGUE ONE
8 ATTACK OF THE CLONES
Thank you for your insightful review, but everybody has an opinion which is something else than a fact. As our favorite right wing cowboy once said:"'Opinions are like assholes anybody has got one."
Then don't if a lot of people enjoy it so be it, after the brutish dismissal of Bats VS supes and the suicide squad and anybody who dared to enjoy it Star wars should not be another such discussion
It doesn't come close to the first two but I enjoy it more than Return of the Jedi, which is the weakest of the OT by a considerable margin.
Bought the Rogue One Soundtrack it's not bad, considering it was done in four weeks Giacchino did well I think. I notice he has many critics, personally I like the scores I have purchased of his. I am Score junkie, I have every Star Wars Score.
In isolation it's OK there are maybe four stand out themes/suites, to be honest it was the same for TFA. I often find the music cues and incidental music is always strong point in the Star Wars films.
It's like Barry for Bond vs. Arnold. Williams is the master, and the others borrow from his template.
Totally agree like Barry before him you never want Williams to stop, unfortunately all good things...
I'll be grateful for Episode VIII and John Williams' return.
I enjoyed the film though you have a point, very close to release major changes took place including major reshoots. After the first trailer I found Jyn Erso obnoxious, they really toned down her character prior to release. I always have interest in multiple cuts of films, as I enjoy looking at the evolution of a film and analysis of why certain choices were made. I would be interested to see Rogue One prior to these major changes.
For a score written and recorded in a month, he did a good job. If he had been given the standard amount of time (anything between 6-12 months) I think Giacchino would have nailed it.
There are a lot of filler tracks, but "Your Father Would Be Proud" and "Hope" are strong contenders for cue of the year, imho. Super stuff.
That being said, I'm still curious to hear what Desplat's work would have sounded like. I wasn't overjoyed at him getting the gig in the first place, but still....it would have been an interesting effort.
Once you've seen the film and know what visuals it accompanies it actually gets better, too.
You're right. The score wasn't John Williams at his best. Then again, "The Force Awakens" wasn't John Williams at his best.
Alot of fun Uber Star Wars fans will enjoy this
The voice over is fantastic, I love 70s movie trailers. Watched the trailer for Silent Running a few hours ago bit of nostalgia equally as good.
- 2001
- Planet Of The Apes (also at the end of the '60s)
- Logan's Run
- Silent Running
- Invasion Of The Body Snatchers ('78)
- Soylent Green
- ...
-Demon Seed
-Omega Man had its moments.
-Close Encounters of the Third Kind
-Was going to say Fahrenheit 451 though that film was made alot earlier than I remembered.
-Star Wars though I feel it's more fantasy.
-Not forgetting Robert Wises Star Trek The Motion Picture which owes heavily to 2001.
