1. The Living Daylights (0) - always been top tier
2. Goldeneye (+4) - not perfect but nostalgia and Campbell are enough to keep this high
3. From Russia with Love (+1)
4. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (+1)
5. Casino Royale (-2)
6. Dr No (+4) - gets better each time.
7. Octopussy (-5) - lowest ranking in a while. Visually very bland
8. Goldfinger (+8) - Biggest rise ever, I've never previously been a fan
9. Tomorrow Never Dies (0) - Brosnan moves well, so shoot me, Connery fanboys
10. Moonraker (+1) - Clone of TSWLM. Much better in some ways, much worse in others
11. The Spy Who Loved Me (-3) - Score's not bad, but lack of Barry hurts
12. Diamonds Are Forever (0) - Guilty pleasure for sure. Hilarious.
13. Licence to Kill (0) - Slowly slipping. I don't enjoy it less, just not as a Bond film.
14. The Man With The Golden Gun (+5) - Far from a good film but I enjoyed it this time
15. A View To A Kill (0) - Keeps falling but it's plateaued. Very tired effort
16. Skyfall (+6) - Mainly this high due to Deakins, and this low due to Newman
17. Die Another Day (+3) - Shit, but watchable.
18. Spectre (-1) - Could have been...
19. Thunderball (-1) - Pains me to put it here, the most genuinely great script. Love "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" theme too
20. Quantum of Solace (+2) - Only positive is the score. The skyfall sequence isn't any better than the windsurfing (at least it's shorter)
21. The World is Not Enough (0) - Thames chase is the only good bit
I expect FYEO to sit around GF, YOLT and LALD near AVTAK
Just realized we have the exact same top 12 (albeit in a different order) except I have LALD instead of Moonraker.
@Mendes4Lyfe A reasonably similar list yes :) I see you have Moonraker at the bottom. Sure it has well documented flaws, but I like the skydiving sequence, grand score and epic scale of it. Great dialogue and quips too.
To be fair, Craig is the "Terminator" Bond and suffers superhuman abuse in all four of his films...
CR: Returning to poker after suffering poisoning/cardiac arrest.
QoS: Falling hundreds of feet out of an airplane and smashing into rocks at full speed with nary a bruise.
SF: Being shot off the top of a speeding train and falling hundreds of feet before smashing into a river.
SP: Being drilled inside his brain before waltzing through and picking off Blofeld's entire base with computerized "auto-aim" accuracy (*cue Brad Fiedel*)
I can tolerate superhuman. It's the atrocious CGI that is unforgivable
That too. I agree. This trend toward blurry-edged green screen effects is just as bothersome to me as the wonky rear projection effects of decades past. The PTS's of DAD, SF, and SP and the free-falling scene in QoS are all rather egregious examples of bad green screen. Somehow Casino Royale managed to make do without!
The last time I recall being impressed by real stuntwork in the series was the parkour chase at the beginning of CR (and flipping the Aston several times). So yes, I think it's been lacking. SP had the helicopter flipping in mid-air, which was okay, but hardly original as the whole sequence was lifted from FYEO and quickly resorted to embarrassing green screen anyway. To quote Angelo Palazzi: "Not enough. The helicopter flip is not enough."
being forgettable is worse than being bad. i originally had it in the upper half of my rankings but then it sunk down. compared to moonraker, and other moore movies, it is a serious spy film. but compared to the film industry at large, if it weren't part of bond canon, it would be one of the many spy films that never see the light of day.
Well, you can use that statement for every Bond film. You can also say that Casino Royale or Skyfall are forgettable.
Seriously, FYEO has so many very memorable scenes: Citroen car chase, rock climbing, Bond kicking the car from the cliff, Bond skiing in a Bobsled run chased by motorcylces, the Keelhauling. These are all very memorable and unique action scenes. Even the PTS, silly as it is, is very memorable and contained some great stunt work (they tried to copy it in SP).
I think its the way the films lit that makes it somehow "lack spark". They use "soft lighting" in quite a few darker scenes (the casino) and it makes it seem a little cheap.

License to Kill (at 4) and Octopussy (at 5).
How do you compare a really good serious Bond film against an equally really good colorful Bond film. It's apples vs. oranges.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (at 6) and The Living Daylights (at 7)
Both have good plots and great action. Former has a better directing but latter has a better lead actor. I find them both to be near-great films.
Goldeneye (at 12) and The Spy Who Loved Me (at 13)
Both are similar. Both had formulaic plots but did the formula very well. Both have great casts and both added their own flavor to the franchise. Both showcased the talents of the lead actors. Both also had a slow first hour.
Thunderball (at 14) and From Russia With Love (at 15)
Thunderball is way more entertaining but also has way more boring scenes. From Russia With Love I find both brilliantly done, but also dull in some ways.
Tomorrow Never Dies (at 16) vs. The World Is Not Enough (at 17) vs. Spectre (at 18)
I think this decision is the toughest.
TND has the best action and is really fun, but it's also generic and the plot is shallow.
TWINE had really awesome concepts and ideas, but the execution was awful.
Spectre was an all around well made action movie that did something good in many aspects, but it didn't specialize in anything. Maybe I do like it above the other two, but the impact it's plot may have on the franchise is still deeply offensive to me. Perhaps I'm overpunishing it.
