  • Interesting that some movies are in near-opposite positions on your two lists. How do you figure that?

Well. I try as best I can to separate what I like from what I can see is great despite my personal likes.
How well I've done that is something I'd enjoy having pointed out to me! B-)

It's all good, brother. I was just wondering what criteria you use that separates them so much.

I tend to like the literary Bond, but then I also like the OTT cinema bond, and how & why those paths cross to make my personal list is something that would take pages in a thesis. My 'attempted objective' list is what I conjure I'd think if I were seeing the movies for the first time with no history or personal investment in the character.

I guess the objective criteria would hurt movies like GoldenEye, and Quantum of Solace, then, since they rely on past Bonds. Quantum is hurt pretty badly, but GoldenEye does well, and actually had the same ranking on both lists. How about that, then?

I hadn't noticed that; I made the lists up separately a few hours ago... I guess that's just a pretty great Bond movie then, what? :))

Hey, now, I love me some GoldenEye too. I just figured that its premise about Bond being dragged kicking and screaming into the post-Cold War world would hurt it.

Anyway, here's my list again, so we can do something other than having me interrogate you about all the different points on your list.

    1. Goldfinger
    2. From Russia With Love
    3. Casino Royale
    4. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    5. Goldeneye
    6. Skyfall
    7. Dr. No
    8. The Spy Who Loved Me
    9. Licence to Kill
    10. For Your Eyes Only
    11. You Only Live Twice
    12. The Living Daylights
    13. Tomorrow Never Dies
    14. Thunderball
    15. Quantum of Solace
    16. Live and Let Die
    17. The World is Not Enough
    18. Octopussy

    The Line of Shame:

    19. Diamonds Are Forever
    20. Moonraker
    21. Die Another Day
    22. A View to a Kill
    23. The Man With the Golden Gun

This is an excellent list right here. I'd switch out GE and Spy for TLD and TB, but GE and Spy are excellent entries who many would include in a top 10. Top 10's really do require a lot of thought, there are definitely more than 10 great films in this series.

Not in exact order, but your bottom five LOS is almost identical to mine. Nice! I'd have TWINE there instead of AVTAK. Yes it's one of the worst but what keeps it out for me is that Zorin and his crew are just too entertaining to punish the film too hard :)

The only real fault I can see in @Soundofthesinners list is not including TLD in the top ten. For shame, sir. For shame.

Exactly. Its not perfect (GF and DAD rather too high, TLD rather too low) but at least its reasonable.

Theres nothing to really argue about when people come up with lists like this, just the odd minor quibble. Why cant more people be like soundofthesinners?

Because then we'd have no fun arguing which was best, we'd all just post smilies with thumbs up all the time.

BTW, I like TMWTGG better than FYEO... :D

Well I mean just being reasonable rather than devising lists just to wind me up.

I think Jill was about to say that when Shur Sean got up to get more champagne. Something big had just come up and he was getting ready for refilling. Damn Oddjob has to go and ruin his good time...

I ask myself this question every day.

And I don't think DAD is that high. It's below the line of shame, and I really just don't like The Man With The Golden Gun, and Moore is geriatric in A View to a Kill. I first became a Bond fan around the time of Die Another Day, so I can't hate too much. And the first hour is just so damn solid. I see a few minutes of it on TV and wonder what happened there.

I wish to strike my previous comment above regarding soundofthesinners from the record.

Sorry - cant let that stand old chap. I actually just stuck the disc in to check where the hour mark fell and it is just after the fencing scene when Bond talks to the doorman with the dreads.

So according to you the CGI bullet, an appalling title song, Bond being able to stop his heart, Bond being about 3 stone overweight despite 14 months in a North Korean prsion, the ENTIRE Jinx introduction and cringeworthy ornithology exchange that follows, CGI Jinx diving into the sea, Madonna cameo and the way too long and over the top sword fight all constitute a first hour that is 'so damn solid'?

    Really?

Obviously the second hour drops right off a cliff but we cant pretend the first isnt already on a precipitous downward slope. The first 20 odd minutes (basically until Jinx turns up) are solid enough but after that? Well everything that can be said has been on numerous occasions.

Difficult to disagree with @TheWiz here. DAD is just an absolute gobshite of a film from the moment that CGI bullet is fired in the gunbarrell right up to the end credits. There are very few (if any) redeeming features in this film.

Also need to mention Bond being released by his North Korean captors where he's been tortured for 14 months only to wind up in a 5 star Hong Kong hotel less than 10 minutes later looking like a man who's been dolled up as though he's about to do a photo shoot for GQ Magazine!

Can you believe there are actually some people (mentalists) who think this is a better Bond film than Casino Royale. It beggers belief. Really need to take a long hard look at yourselves. If EON ever bastardize Fleming in this way again, there could be a revolution!

You sure do like to dwell on the negative, don't you?
Instead, you could have picked up on some of the other films in my top ten that you would approve of....?
I suppose you just enjoy running some people down too much eh?

I can't believe there are people that think DAD is a better film than Sharknado, let alone any other Bond film. There, I said it.
  • I loved sharknado! For all the right and wrong reasons, haha!

I don't think you can be a Bond fan and consider DAD anything above bottom five. That's not a Bond fan, that's a fan of pitful "cinema" passing itself off as Bond.
  • I'm genuinely interested, is it the fact that I have DAD mid ranked, or the fact that I have OHMSS last that upsets people here??
How can you guys be so judgemental about someone just from one films placing?
DAD is with plenty of faults, but I find it a lot more watchable than some others.

Definitely OHMSS for me. I can live with you finding enjoyment from DAD but to have OHMSS ranked last is just insane.
