23. Quantum of Solace
Summary
All of the Bond films have their good points and bad points, but I love them all; except Quantum of Solace
Tell us how you really feel. ;)
I love QoS...if only because of the locales, David Arnold's wonderful score, and Forster's style with the action sequences.
That could take a while. All of the Bond movies vary. They have their differences. If I want to watch a Bond movie with a good plot then I watch For Your Eyes Only, The Living Daylights, OHMSS or From Russia With Love.
If I just want a good laugh or want to enjoy myself then I watch TMWTGG, Moonraker or Octopussy.
Despite their differences, I have always, at some point, been in the mood for one of these movies. Quantum of Solace is the only movie that I have never wanted to sit through. I saw it at the cinema, and once again to check the DVD worked, but other than that it has pretty much sat on my shelf. When I'm in the mood for it then I'll watch it.
I have tried many times (and found it frustrating) to simply list them in order of which is better. I'm a Bond fan who likes all the movies

I'm not the only one to rank DR NO low then!
Interestingly, the communities and mine top three are the same, and looking down the rest of your list, the communities and mine are similar; wow I'm the average Bond fan it seems!
What I find so interesting in this thread is the massive differences in opinion about so many of the films. I actually love DAF, TMWTGG, and LTK, because they are so ridiculously campy. yet the campiness of MR turns me off, and I consider it the worst of the Bond films by far.

Oh goodness, YES. The sets. The dialogue: "I'll see you in hell!" Wayne Newton as a preacher! The bar scene/fight. The parachuting to a wedding. The maggots!
It's very corny, very campy...but GREAT STUFF!!!!
13 films down, 10 to go.
1) ON HER MAJESTY's SECRET SERVICE
2) FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
3) THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
4) FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE

Not a bad looking list so far. One or two I would question. But each to their own. ;)
Great to see the Dalton era steadily rising through the rankings.
I totally agree. Every time I watch it the more I realise it is actually a much more traditional Bond movie than I realised first time I saw it. It gives the formula a refreshing twist, but all the classic elements are very much alive and kicking. Ninjas in Central America? The waterskiing stunt (which I love). Q in the field with a daft rake/antenna. Its so great that there are all these fans on here who really love the Dalton era. I used to think I was just a lone lunatic, but this site has shown me that my admiration for the Daltonator is shared by many hardcore Bond fans, which is all that matters really. The average casual fan might still look at me like I'm crazy if I say I like Dalton, but who cares - I just feel sorry for them.
I worship it.

4. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
5. The Spy Who Loved Me
For me SF after QoS was a large disappointment, Craig is good in the part but the story makes no sense and the movie feels more like Mendes wanting to make his mark than somebody making a decent movie with a coherent story.
SF opened brilliantly and then after Bonds death he resurfaced miraculously and even more odd is how easily he gets accepted back into the service. Flemings TMWTGG is far more realistic and finally had a chance to be implemented..... alas we get Mendes on an ego-trip making a visual sometimes beautiful looking movie but plot holes where Hugo Drax's space shuttle fleet could pass through with no fear of touching any sides.
SF was style over substance, in that sense the MI series is becoming easily the better series when it comes to the original 007 series.
i always viewed this as a desperation move on the part of M.. she knows she is up the creek with her superiors because of the lost data drive, and now she has a lunatic terrorist targeting her.. so when Bond shows back up, she has to depend on her best agent, because there is nowhere else for her to turn to - which is why she passes him through to resume field work, even though he failed every test miserably.
Style over substance?.... i personally don't see it in SF... in QOS for sure, but i don't see it with SF.. it has a lot of style, but i also think there is enough substance there to back it up - plot holes or not.
Perhaps Mendes & Co. can provide the explosions & angst necessary to snare the audience in spite of a good, cohesive story though....
i dont doubt that people like things that go "boom"... but if all they are looking for is nonsense - then how do you explain DAD and CR??.... yes, DAD made it's money - still doesn't change the fact that it's lauded as the worst Bond film in the franchise by almost everyone... but here comes CR, a more stripped down character driven story - and it made boat loads of cash, and is regarded as one of the best in the series by almost everyone...... the point i am trying to make, is that "thinking you know what the audience wants" is a dangerous crap shoot - studios think they know, but look how many times they end up failing...
retred of GE+TWINE... meh, it's nothing new to the franchise - can't really condemn the film for that... MR/TSWLM, GF/AVTAK, DAD/all 19 previous films, QOS/LTK... it happens from time to time.
QOS looks very good - but it's a half finished story that resolves absolutely nothing with regards to it's plot, and moves way too damn fast for most of the general public to understand what is happening.. films should force you to pay attention, but not to the point of straining your brain...
now i'll concede that there were a couple good character moments in QOS, but IMO, too far and few between
Also, Skyfall has plenty of character moments and "substance." A great affirmation of fortitude and Bond's bulldog nature.
@chrisisall - Doesn't seem like we ever agree on much these days :D I still love ya.
