Terence Young was brilliant no doubt about that, IMO he didn't make a bad bond film.

I wish Peter Hunt had directed more than just OHMSS too.

Guy Hamilton I like GF and LALD but not so much DAF and TMWTGG.

Lewis Gilbert was good at the OTT Bond film, something other directors have struggled with (I mean you Tamahori), I really like TSWLM.

John Glenn was solid I like all his films but not so much AVTAK.

Martin Campbell was pretty good too, Love CR and GE is solid.

Sam Mendes I really liked SF so hope SP can be as good if not better.

Agree with nearly all your points Sharky. It would have been great to have Hunt Direct another excellent film (OHMSS is brilliant). However, Gilbert is 'a clown'. He turned the films almost into parodies.....Jaws in MR was a joke! Tamohori was also poor.

For me, it's Young and Campbell. Both geniuses when it comes to Bond ^:)^

I agree that no one does OTT Bond like Gilbert, and TSWLM is still the greatest one he did. Legendary film imho with so many absolutely iconic cinematic Bond moments.

I am not a fan of Hamilton at all. I actually like TMWTGG best of his, only because of Roger and Lee's exceptional performances, Barry's unusual score, and the lush, exotic (for me) locales. It's quirky, and I like quirky.

Glenn was workmanlike but terribly pedestrian (I realize that he made most of his films on lower budgets, and that must be commended however). OP, TLD & LTK are his best imho.

The jury is still out on Mendes for me. A bit of a poser to me if that makes any sense (I'm referring to his film, and not him). I reserve judgement until SP.

    Apted and Tamahori..... :-q

I thought Spottiswoode was a fine director. He did a lot with a light script. He's like Gilbert with subtlety. And he's done small indies as well as big Hollywood.

This is a basic summary of what I've noticed after going through hundreds of youtube, blog, and this forums rankings and general observation over the years

DN: you love Young's craftmanship or hate the pace (the fetch my shoes doesn't raise as much controversary as I thought, most likely the good points make up for it).
FRWL: Bond fans love it, general public prefer GF
GF: General public love it, Bond fans prefer FRWL
TB: Strongly love or hate, one of the most divisive. Most criticisms are for the underwater scenes, and sometimes the villains.
YOLT: Generally disliked unless you it's your 1st or 1st OTT Bond.
OHMSS: Mostly in the top 10 these days even by the general public.
DAF: Hated unless you like the quirkiness
LALD: This is an interesting one. Few people have strong opinions about it, seems to float below average in rankings. Many people are nostalgic towards it.
    TMWTGG: :-q
    TSWLM: Mostly liked
MR: :-q unless you like it as a popcorn flick
FYEO: Accepted unless you can't get over the silliness in what is supposed to be a serious film
OP: Mostly disliked but those who love it, love it
    AVTAK: :-q
    TLD: Top 10 usually
LTK: Quite controversial. Often ranked near TLD.
GE: Mostly liked but seems to be waning.
    TND: :-q
    TWINE: :-q
    DAD: :-q
    CR: :)>-
    QOS: :-q
SF: A favourite, criticisms centre on the plot and score

I think you'll find that those that appreciated Brosnan as Bond seem to rate this one as okay-to-very good.

I think I"d pick Martin Campbell as my favorite Bond director, with CR as my all-time favorite and GE at #5. Terrence Young was also very good, and Sam Mendes to this point. The others were hit-and-miss to me.

Meaning you? ;) Looks like mirandafrost is the only member who ranks it higher than you, at 2nd.

Out of 153 rankings in this thread, only 24 people have it in their top 10. About half have it as 18-23. That's statistically speaking...it does have its moments, mainly the car park chase (plus its score) and Dr Kaufman was a favourite of my childhood and even now.

Interestingly, on this forum only TND, AVTAK, DAD do not have a first ranking.

I don't wish this to sound rude but what is it that you like so much about Tomorrow Never Dies? Is it a nostalgia thing? If not then please do tell because personally I have always viewed it as one of the worst of the lot.

Brosnan looks his best in that movie.
David Arnold's score for it is second only to a Barry score.
Michelle Yeoh is a terrific Bond girl, and the best female fighter the series will ever see.
    Stamper makes me laugh.
Jonathan Pryce's performance is at once unexpectedly subtle & magnificently hammy.
The re-worked YOLT idea plays fairly believably here IMO.
While there's more action than I personally require from a Bond film, all of the set pieces are good.
The movie is beautifully photographed, and nicely edited (good pace throughout).
Brosnan is huskier & more relaxed than in his first outing.
I love the chemistry between Michelle & Pierce.
Did I mention that Michelle is gorgeous?
I adore the level of tongue in cheek that never gets out of hand.
Best ending of any of Brosnan's films.

I will have to re-evaluate this film. It's either my first or second ever Bond film but I only hold nostalgia towards GE not TND.

Can't say I agree entirely, but I see the merits of your points, It's a good popcorn flick without the failed deeper emotional component of TWINE. While Yeoh is one of the better characterised Bond girls, I don't feel the chemistry between her and Brosnan.

And I'm one of the few who loves the BMW, to almost if not the same level as the Astons

Terence Young - My favorite Bond director. The best. He got it (having Connery helped too I'm sure). 3 Amazing films I (believe) all slot within my top 5.
Guy Hamilton - I appreciate his style, his boldness, and his dedication to bizarre qualities. Sometimes it worked more than others, but all in all, another great Bond director.
Lewis Gilbert - The ultimate OTT Bond director. Sure, he basically made the same film three times, but his films have a beauty and grandeur to them that very few, if any, other films in the serious have matched. Lush, grand, big, polished, gorgeous, and exciting. Love him.
Peter Hunt - Great editor, great director.
John Glen - Workmanlike, and lacks that "auteur" aspect I admire in other filmmakers, but he was workmanlike in a way I've come to appreciate. Out of his 5 films I love 3 of them, and still enjoy the other two. The man knew how to construct and direct an action scene, and in an action franchise, that's something.
Martin Campbell - Basically John Glen but better, and with a better visual eye. His films are paced perfectly and have a real energy to him (which is something I came to better understand when I saw his behavior on set. Talk about an energetic dude).
Roger Spottiswoode - Made one kick-ass movie. Sure, it's light and breezy, but he got the job done.
Michael Apted - Better suited to As the World Turns
Lee Tamahori - His instincts for "bigger and flashier" probably got the best of him, but those instincts often came in handy - Die Another Day has a lot of life and pep to it. It's very colorful, and when it isn't flying off the rails, I think it's pretty great.
Marc Forster - Took the "make Bond like Bourne" directions from the producers and then tried to make an art house film. Should also mention that he's relatively incompetent as an action director. Looks really, really nice though when the camera stays away from the actors' faces. He's got a good visual eye.
Sam Mendes - Retained the old school Bond sensibilities all while still injecting the franchise with his own unique spin and modernizing those same sensibilities to make Skyfall relevant.

First Top 5, this is tough, there must be ties because some movies are literally equally as good:

    1. Casino Royale/On Her Majesty's Secret Service (tie)
    2. Skyfall
    3. From Russia with Love
    4. Thunderball
    5. Goldeneye

To be fair, I think he's a good director that got saddled with a questionable script & got a little overwhelmed by the biggest production on his resume. Martin Campbell took on Green Lantern, and also had his hands full with stuff he couldn't control. Sometimes these things happen...
    ;)

Ok here's as good of a list as I'm going to get until I sit down and watch them again, free of all distractions, which is something I haven't done in a looooong time.

    1. TLD
1.5. OHMSS (TLD & OHMSS are the best, TLD just wins on rewatchability)

    3. CR
    4. FRWL
    5. GE (was 2, down due to the score)

    6. OP (always has been a favourite, popular opinion be damned. I can't think of anything I dislike about it, apart from the theme song)

The top 6 are solid placings, top 5 move around a bit, but as of now, TLD and OHMSS are ahead of the pack.

    7. SF (mainly because of the nod and wink moments - cufflinks, "he's keen to get on")
    8. GF (I didn't think it would place this high)
    9. MR (this is a surprise, I've realised I gotta stop taking things so seriously and enjoy the ride. There's many feel good moments here)
    10. TB (would be top 5 if it wasn't for the long underwater scenes)
    11. DAF (insult to OHMSS, but lots of fun, this has dropped as I've learnt to appreciate the serious ones more)
    12. LTK (let down by the score. Doesn't feel like a Bond movie, I like it as a crime one)
    13. FYEO (Unfortunately another one let down by the score)
    14. AVTAK (I used to love this...I still do, but I like the others more)
    15. TSWLM (Looks like this has been pushed down by the ones above)
    16. TND
    17. Dr No
    18. TMWTGG (would probably watch this over LALD)
    18.5 LALD
    20. TWINE (used to like this, but it's so bland in all areas)
    21. DAD

    22. YOLT (used to like as a kid, but not for a long time now
    23. QOS

This was the list before I developed an obsession with all things Bond
    1. CR
    2. GE
    3. LTK (I like crime movies)
    4. OP (like I said, always liked this)
    5. FRWL
    6. DAF
    7. FYEO
    8. AVTAK
    9. LALD
    10. TSWLM
    11. TMWTHH
    12. OHMSS (oh how this has changed)
    13. TWINE
    14. TLD (not sure why it's here, the only criticism in my notes is the villains. Perhaps this was during the period when I had a hard time viewing anyone other than Pierce Brosnan as Bond).
    15. MR
    16. GF (for the same reasons why many here don't like it. A bit harsh to be this low)
    17. TB - due to pacing
    18. DN
    19. TND
    20. DAD
    21. YOLT

Spot on BAIN - Glad to welcome @Lazzers and his YOLT love. Not enough of it here.

Where would the series be without YOLT's ninjas and Little Nellie and volcano and crack head villain and huuuuuge magnet and very sexiful girls and piranhas and rooftop punch up and and...everything else that makes YOLT a complete joy. ;-)

And also glad to see @Lazzers rates SF as his favourite Craig film ;-).
