I'll my best to explain why I like Live And Let Die.... i know it's not a popular choice amongst people on this board... #1, it has arguably the greatest Bond theme (next to Diamonds Are Forever), and one of my favorite all together soundtracks...... from a film history standpoint, this film did take advantage of the blaxploitation era of movies - but it didn't feel shoehorned, like they had to do it... this was actually a big gamble for the producers to cast so many african americans into a mainstream production - not to mention in very prominent roles - not the stereotypical butler or slave, or flashy person of color song and dance type of nonsense... they gave these men serious roles... blaxploitation was really a cult like movement - and of the actors featured in this film, where stars of that genre - and this film not only gave them some mainstream exposure, it also helped advance a number of their careers, ie: Yaphet Kotto... and how taboo must it have been at the time to see a white man kissing a black woman on the big screen?... this was a movie who's boldness kind of gets forgotten about over time...
the film itself... while having trying to keep one foot in reality and one foot in the world of mysticism, i thought it did just fine at the balancing act... to the point where the voodoo stuff starts getting played up a little too much, it gets a gentle nudge back to the real world... sure its full of camp and dumb humor... but i found it more entertaining than DAF, simply because of Roger... LALD I think was perfect for it's time, i love Kotto as the villain - sophisticated and charming... Jane Seymour is absolutely to die for... Tee Hee is a decent henchman.... Baron Samedi was pretty useless, and when it looked like he was going to have an impact, he was quickly killed off - but he has a very striking and memorable look to him... David Hedison is my favorite Leiter next to Jeffery Wright... plus, the film is probably home to some of the most brilliant oneliners - as dumb as they may be, i still laugh every time i hear them
had DAF starred Roger Moore and not Connery, I probably would've been more receptive to it... while I do enjoy DAF, I find Connery's unenthusiastic, and often times sleepy performance too much - we know he didn't want to do another Bond, and essentially had to be bribed back into the role, but he could've at least pretended a little... it just didn't fit Connery's style..
TMWTGG (much like DAD) i saw as a watsed opportunity more than anything... it had potential to be something thrilling and unique, but it all caved in on itself by crowbaring in a plot surrounding the Solex - who cares about it?... i guess it was a way to keep Bond current (with the energy crisis and all).. but it was an unneeded plot device, that was better off on the cutting room floor... Rog's performance in this is okay - but is outshined all day by Christopher Lee... but overall, it's just a boring movie.. even Barry's score is drab compared to his more illustrious outings.. the whole thing just kind of floats along with no real pace or rhythm, it's just... there.
i can watch it - on very rare occasions.... i'll throw in MR before TMWTGG most nights.... i'm sorry, for whatever reason it just doesn't do it for me..... glad you like it though
(*)
lol thanks - Biff Tannen is amazing... LALD isn't for every Bond fan - i wouldn't try to push it on anyone, but I would suggest another viewing, couldn't hurt...... i also dig the plot.. sure it's simplistic, drug dealing... but i like the way Kananga intends to go about his plan - rather ingenious.... overall, i would say Kotto's performance is the best in the film.... he has a presence about him that most villains didn't have (but few did).... as i said before, not only was he charming, but he had a mean streak that showed itself on occasion... he's one of my favorite villains next to Zorin and Donald Grant.

1. Moonraker
2. Diamonds Are Forever
3. You Only Live Twice
4. The Man With the Golden Gun
5. The Spy Who Loved Me

Point being, regardless of any amount of liquor in one night or early morning my feelings towards any Bond releases would remain unaffected if I was so inclined to see one at the time, i.e. I could sit down and view say Goldfinger again, I'd most likely drop off about 10 minutes in, or if it was Moonraker I'd probably have another strong drink just to get me through it or in the hope that I pass out, never to recover
My feelings, adulation and loathing of any 007 release would be unaffected is good summing up, Live and Let Die and TWINE would still be in a high position and lesser fare such as Diamonds or TND would still not be above chicken litter, i.e. there would be no change in appreciations
The reason for the drastic change in appreciation of the films whilst drunk lies in the 'Fun Factor' of the films. When I'm drinking and laughing with friends, the more fun the movie is, the more you can heckle it and laugh at it, the better.
Guess my reputation as MI6's alcoholic starts now. :))
Over the years, though, I would venture a guess that I have seen most of them in a situation where alcohol was involved.
Those first 4 are spot on. Though I'm not sure about Die Another Day at #8, I don't care how many drinks you give me, that movie's still going to suck hog water.
MR, YOLT and TMWTGG were my top 3 as cold sober child. While I appreciate the more faithful to Fleming efforts as TLD, OHMSS, FRWL, CR'06, etc., it was the more comically/fantasy oriented Bond films that piqued my interest in the series very young. I think these Bond films are very underrated IMHO.
