Same here. Lots of the stuff posters say is overrated is not highly rated to begin with. Instead, I think they're listing their least liked credits, score, ally, etc.

That is my problem with many threads. People confuse the best Bond movie with their favorite, the worst Bond movie to the one they liked least, a badly written role to a miscast, or vice versa, etc. Not that all this is mutually exclusive of course, but when a thread asks about a movie that is overrated, it does not mean the worst, it means the one that is considered to be better than it is. There are far worse Bond movies than TSWLM, but I consider it the most overrated.

That's my problem with choosing some of these, e.g. the score. I consider all the scores (except GE) to recieve the praise or thrashing they deserve, so I didn't know what to choose other than what I consider to be the series' worst.

Aww, I like Tiffany Case. Not one of the best Bond Girls, but I liked her for the first 70 percent of DAF, since at some point later on, she turns into a bit of a ditz, where she wasn't really like that earlier...

She retreated into her 'female thing' to survive.
Sorry, not too PC, I know.... :))

Oh for heaven's sake, this is all subjective anyway. I have heard members say good things about both, so I thought I'd put them up for consideration. How about Anya then? I don't find her to be pick of the litter, and she seems higher rated then some others.

I might even say Tracy, but I'd like to avoid being tied to a piece of lumber and lit on fire at the moment, thanks.
  • I'd say Anya is pretty universally condemned. And rightly so.

Most Overrated Bond Film: SF - While I love the film, I don't think it's the very best in the series.
Most Overrated Title Track: YKMN - many folks screamed that we had finally returned to good music. It's a decent theme song, don't get me wrong, but as a follow up on the abysmal DAD, it might get a little too much credit. ;-)
Most Overrated Title Credits: GF - They are great but not superb IMO.
Most Overrated PTS: GF - the one-liners work but other than that, it doesn't have much to do with the rest of the film, nor are its story and its key players set up well.
Most Overrated Score: TND - It's a fine score but it's by far not as great as I've heard many claim.
Most Overrated Villain: Silva - He's a good villain for sure but I neither consider him scary nor very interesting. Just out there along with the other baddies.
Most Overrated Ally: Jack Wade - I don't even think his jokes work.
Most Overrated Bond Girl: Fields - Her appearance is memorable, sure, but she's gone pretty fast and doesn't contribute much to the whole thing. The fact that Camille pales next to her, is a testament of how uninteresting she is.
Most Overrated Minor Character: MP in most of the 70s Bonds. She doesn't get a lot to do or say but that's not my problem. My problem is that what very little she does or say hardly leaves any impression at all. Surely they could have found ways to spark things up for MP's one minute scene.
Most Overrated Henchman: Elvis - He's hardly in the film, doesn't do much, doesn't even get a good death.

I don't think anyone could rate Elvis anything but a waste of film.

Agreed. I'm hard pressed to even recall his image in my mind.

Hey- how do we even know his name was 'Elvis'? Is it in the credits?
Meh, just a throwaway goon IMO. Not important to the plot.

Was he even called Elvis in the film?

EDIT: Just beaten to it by @chrisisall.

Other than the big goof losing his toupee, so am I. Although being exploded by a fuel cell was perhaps even more entertaining.

And no, he was so valuable that only the credits reveal his name.

I do believe his name is mentioned, yes. I will have to investigate when I watch QoS again.

@OBrady- Now that's quite the useless trivia question all things considered. I don't remember hearing it said.

@chrisisall- like most of Forster's editing, it happened too fast for me to consider the details. My initial reaction was "good, no more of this idiot" :)

I don't think Elvis, Fields and Jack Wade are overrated. Are there many fans thinking Wade was an improvement over Leiter for instance? Or thinking Elvis was a decent henchman? And I don't think Fields was that bad, but I don't rate her very high either and she does not have many fans.

Most Overrated Bond Film: CR - I love a lot of things about it, but there's a lot in there that really drags it down, like the "you've stripped me of my armour" part
Most Overrated Title Track: You Know My Name - *please don't throw the tomatoes at me* I just don't find it as great as a lot of people do. Chris Cornell is a bit of a nonentity
Most Overrated Title Credits: CR - also still reallly good, just not top 10 material
    Most Overrated PTS: MR
    Most Overrated Score: GE
    Most Overrated Villain: LeChiffre
Most Overrated Ally: Can't think of anyone that's overrated - sure there are weak allies, but none I would consider overrated.
Most Overrated Bond Girl: Natalya, Fields, and Vesper in that order
Most Overrated Minor Character: Can't really think of one, maybe Mathis
    Most Overrated Henchman: Oddjob

*Note: I actually do like a lot of CR, I just find many of the elements overrated due to the fact that it's in the current zeitgeist

Hmm. It seems to me MR's PTS comes in for a pretty regular slagging. But personally, I rather like it.

I am trying to think when his name is called. My best guess is when Bond rides up to the barge after running into Camille, gives Elvis his card and then I think Greene calls Elvis back to him or something. Greene could also call to him during the ending hotel sequence when he tells him to keep his gun at the ready or something. I will have to investigate the next time I pop the film in.

Funny, I think it's underrated, and in some ways more impressive than TSWLM as a stunt. Of course, the Jaws tag is abysmal.

Agreed on the stunt. I think it's more impressive and riveting than the Asgaard jump. And I don't even mind Jaws flying into the circus tent because it allows for a visually striking segue into the titles.

But, DarthDimi, the whole POINT of the Goldfinger PTS is that it has nothing to do with the film! I'm rarely one to defend GF but that's a silly argument.

I too will jump on the MR bandwagon. While I wouldn't say it tops Asgaard, for me, it is indeed a riveting, thrilling opening. It makes the free-fall sequence in QOS look comparably terrible.
