Thunderball and The spy who loved me, I was in the mod for some underwater sequences :)
Thunderball is simply epic in its scale, like a war film underwater, with spy, as a kid I just fell
in love with the Lotus, what a cute idea. Now for YOLT and Moonraker in a double bill.

You must be waterlogged after that double bill. :>

A superb choice for a combo if I may say so. Both of them. I must do that myself one day. I think FRWL/TMWTGG & DN/LALD would also work (my two favourite Bonds in their best performances imho).

That was some great over the top fun :D but I came down to earth with Dr No, which still
    has its science fiction connections.

I love that 'war scream' Craig makes at one point during the fight between Bond and Mitchell. Bond was blood thirsty for revenge there, fantastic stuff.

For those who criticize the editing in QUANTUM OF SOLACE, I will tell you this. Aside from the initial embarrassing CGI fall through the glass ceiling (yes, I know that the actors are real, but surroundings and the plummet were not), that battle from the swinging ropes between Bond and Mitchell is a near masterpiece (people who've known me on here know that I'm not flip with that term). It is beautifully cut and photographed. The stunts, camera, the editing, and whatever completely integrated computer clean-ups were used, work harmoniously and tell a clear, kinetic tale.

The opening car chase may be a little jarring at first, but one can easily acclimate and enjoy it if one lets oneself.

    Great Editing!

Both of those are excellent! I particularly like how they both end.

What with the Alfa Romeo going over the edge of the cliff? Either way there are some lovely shots in QoS.

What about the boat chase? ;)

That's a big "meh" from me. It's alright until the reverse shot after Bond hooks the anchor into the opposing boat. Took me ages to figure out what exactly happened.

    That one is boring.

    Exactly.

I like the boat chase alright. And it has a fantastic track playing in the background. It has that beautiful Thunderball-like Summer feeling into it.

I prefer the quieter, more somber moments in QoS. That's when the real meat and bones to the story are to be found.

QoS is just a killer film actually. A slow burn that just grows on you.

Just saw it twice in the past three days. It's currently at #10 for me, I wouldn't be surprised if I were tempted to move up its place a bit in the future.

I'm actually in the mood to watch it again myself, but am doing a reverse Nolan Bat-thon at the moment (TDRK down and TDK & BB next up). I'll be sure to get to it after those.

And we role on to the 70's we hit live and let die yes. I know diamonds are forever came out in 1971 but I honestly don't feel the 70's started for bond until well Moore became 007

First film since dr. No not scored by John Barry and Martin's score really reflect the mood of the early 70's

I love this film and I really can't say enough positive things about it sure it has its faults and I don't think it will be in my top ten any time soon but yeah

    Positives
Villains: I love Tee Hee I love Baron Samidi I love Whisper I love Kanagna heck I even love the cab driver after the garbage group of villains (besides wint and Kidd) two weeks ago I am quite happy with this group of villains down to earth and quite interesting.
Plot: drug smuggling plots are frowned upon in this forum but honestly it's a down to earth and I like it and the voodoo elements add an unusual element that I kind of like
Allies: quarrel Jr. is awesome Leiter is fantastic
Bond: Roger Moore is just brilliant he feels comfortable in the bond role in his first film and honestly I have to remind myself this is his first film as 007 he is just so natural in the film.
Solitaire and miss Caruso super hot super interesting and ten times better then the dull fest of two weeks ago

    Negatives
Rosie Carver: she is annoying and incompetent
Some of the jokes feel forced (an issue I feel I will have with a majority of the Moore films on this rewatch journey)
Sherif J W Pepper god why this character exists in two bond films I will never know

    1. From Russia with love
    2. On her Majesties Secret Service
    3. Live and let die
    4. Spectre
    5. Dr. No
    6. Thunderball
    7. Goldfinger
    8. You only live twice
    9. Diamonds are forever
    10. Casino Royale 1954
    11. Casino Royale 1967

a little surprised I am ranking it so high (above a Craig film no less) but I believe this is right.

What is surprising to me as while many complain and say Moore is the funny bond and while some comedy is present in live and let die it's a far darker film then many give credit for
  • Posts: 9,847
For me moore's bond is something of an enigma as I like the darker films of his like for your eyes only Octopussy and live and let die yet for some reason they kept amping up the comedy well in two weeks the man with the golden gun

And those films you call serious contained some of the zaniest bits in the franchise; delicatessen, Thatcher, Tarzan yell, "sit" and all of that. I would say, aside from JW Pepper (one of my favorite characters) and a few other bits, LIVE AND LET DIE is Moore's straightest Bond film. No double-take animals, no breaking the fourth wall (as in Vijay playing the Bond theme on his flute and, worse still, Bond recognizing it).

I always though Baron Samedi breaks the fourth wall at the end.

Is Moore's Bond in LALD all that different from his Simon Templar?

Yes. Moore's Bond has more in common with Lord Brett Sinclair (his character from The Persuaders!) than Simon Templar under his portrait.

Yes. Moore's Bond has more in common with Lord Brett Sinclair (his character from The Persuaders!) than Simon Templar under his portrait.

Fair enough, from the relatively little I've seen of The Saint, the two characters seemed kind of similar.

Templar is nicer, more caring, and very righteous (and dare I say, more competent) than Bond. Moore's Bond is a playboy, albeit less corny than Sinclair.

Last week, on a flight from the States to Paris, I watched Goldfinger and Thunderball. The in-flight entertainment had quite a few Bond films from which to choose; just as we were about to land I watched the Paris sequence from A View to a Kill.

19 years ago I was on a flight from Europe to the States and they showed Goldeneye. This is when everyone had to watch the same film. What was interesting is that any scene that contained a plane in a compromised situation was removed; there would be a jump in the film. So picture Goldeneye with most of the airplane scenes cut. One has to wonder, why did they show it at all?

When I was on a flight back from assignment to the middle east, they showed CR and they edited a lot of scenes regarding Le Chiffres plan to destroy the skyfleet plane, I also recall M not saying 9/11
