Happy belated Birthday Mrs Bianchi for six days ago!
Dr.No
Watched this a few days ago and still love it. Tho I did notice how slow the movie is to really get going this time. It's always the island/Dr.No parts that I remember the most and from memory I'd thought they took up most of the movie. But instead there's a whole hour of film that comes before that and I found that first hour to maybe move a little slowly this time. 9/10
FRWL
This movie just keeps on getting better each time I see it. It almost plays like an old film noir movie with the darker atmosphere and I absolutely love that. It's weird to think just how restrained FRWL is even compared to Dr.No and while I still prefer the more "adventurous" movies, FRWL is a fine fine entry with a great cast of villains and a decent bond girl. Although, anyone else think that Kronsteen is a bit wasted? The chess game makes him out to be almost like an evil counterpart to Bond. Suave, smart, well dressed and creepy as all hell. And then we don't see him until the end when they kill him off. I almost wish he could have been in a movie on his own because Klebb ad Grant are more then enough for FRWL. Anyways, 10/10 top 10 entry
I agree completely about Kronsteen. They made him out to be some big deal that would give Bond a run for his money. However, that may have been intentional.... the way Blofeld just dispatches him without a care in the world just goes to show how scary Blofeld really is- and makes you wonder 'if he doesn't think Kronsteen is worth keeping around, he must have some POWERFUL guys on his side!'
All right, let's get this over with. Shoot me if you wish, but DAD wasn't as bad as I remember from last time I watched it. :-t TIME OUT! I said not as bad. However, I wouldn't put it in my Top Ten. Nevertheless, I was more satisfied and excited about DAD this time around. I enjoyed all the action pieces a lot, since this is the movie's big strength in my opinion. The only one I didn't like was the windsurfing scene, of course. Enough about that. Another thing that struck me as better this time was the score. I found myself enthusiastically patting my foot to the tune and actually enjoying some of the music. And as everyone here seems to agree with, the first half was much better than the second half. Still, I didn't think the second half was terrible. I enjoy the fight with Mr. Kil, the confrontation in Graves' office, the car chase with Zao, and the airplane finale. All of these were really good! The one aspect I hated the most and always will are the characters, that is, except for Miranda Frost, who is the only worthy villain in the entire movie. Graves, Zao, Mr. Kil, Vlad, Jinx, and Falco are all a pathetic waste of time, and really do keep the movie from being Top Ten worthy, because they also affect the majority of the cheesy, camp-infused dialogue.
When all things are said and done, I found DAD better than my last viewing of it. It'll climb up a little bit in my rankings, say maybe around #13 or so.
So wait..you think DAD is bad yet you put it #13? So does that mean there are still 9 movies in the franchise you think are worse? You're breaking my heart here. Tho i'll agree about DAD not being THAT bad..I've always just found it forgettable and dull
I said I'd place it around there, but I'm not finalizing anything yet. Also, I neevr said it was bad, just not as bad as people had made it out to be. Just because I wouldn't put it in my Top Ten doesn't mean it's not good.
Yeah, I love all 22 Bond movies! Just because I'd choose OHMSS last for a Bond pick doesn't mean that I hate OHMSS. In fact, I'd take OHMSS to many other movies out there! I never hate any Bond movie, it's just that I believe that some are better than others, that's all.
here, here!
Thanks my good man!
Hahahaha! Exactly!
Make that three of us! It's my #2 Bond film behind OHMSS.
That's how I feel about DAF. Satisfied, but not dazzled. Or maybe I could say shaken, but not stirred. ;)
Of course I know it back to front and seen it countless times but for the purpose of say, having watched it, which I will, this is where it all started on the movie front
Connery looks the part, Honey Ryder is almost perfect, shame they had to spoil it with an awful Berry duplication years later, Dr No is one of the most articulate and interesting villains of the 1960s, fine locations, we get introduced to Bond, he hands in his Beretta, gets the immortal Walther PPK, goes off to Jamaica, and all said it's probably one of the best adventures of the first ten outings. Poor fight with Wiseman though, a bit of struggling on the platform and it's all over so quickly. What goes on before though does componsate for that. Overall rating 8.5/10
Yeah, for such a big time villain like Dr. No, and given the fact that we don't see him until the last twenty minutes or so, we should have gotten a bigger, better, and longer fight.
You know when it's a Bond favorite when the movie goes by in the blink of an eye! I always loved FRWL, and after watching it last night, my opinion is still the same. It is such a classic, with so many great aspects like the villains, the story, the music, and an excellent performance by Sean Connery. Definitely the best Connery Bond in my opinion! If GoldenEye had never been made, then FRWL would take the spot as my number 1.
I swear nobody held a pistol to my head to watch this but earlier today I picked up a copy in a bargain bin and decided to put it on
I could be here all night with this but not going to
Keeping it short, Roberts was actually not that annoying this time around somehow, still don't feel comfortable with the stupid adolescent Fire Truck chase through San Francisco, and the Golden Gate bridge battle never gets any easier to watch in terms of embarrassment or 'WTF' moments. How many airships did Zorin have, because they appeared to change size or room capacity each time one was in the air. Grace Jones is OK, but dull to watch and I shed no tears when she went up with the bomb. Tanya Roberts can't see a huge Airship the size of Nebraska behind her from 30 yards away, before she gets snatched near the end, which actually fits in nicely with the overall nonsense that is Roger Moore's Swansong
Poor, boring teaser, Bond's stunt double goes skiing, awful inappropriate Beach Boys music, what was it even doing in there and Duran Duran theme intro does sound firmly stuck in the 1980s. Christopher Walken makes for a fun villain but we've seen him in so much better, I don't think Patrick McNee really needed to be in this although did provide one or two amusing moments as Bond's Chauffer
The film just goes downhill once we get to California, I don't feel much for the arson attack on the elevators, or Roberts swinging onto cables screaming, but the descent down the ladder is not too badly done. Thereafter it's best to just switch off as the film just degenerates into childish nonsense and Moore just hams it up in what was to be his final appearance. Final scenes ensue with a 57 year old Moore in the shower with his younger accomplice - 'That is not the soap', I almost wanted to vomit, and Moore finally bows out from James Bond after 12 years and disappears below a shower curtain with an awkward 'Ooooooh'
This will never reach legendary status for 007 adventures - 4.5/10
The track "Necros Attacks" came on randomly on my iTunes and it got me in the mood to watch it. It's never been a great favourite of mine, but I really enjoyed it. The story is solid, the music's amazing, the action is done well, Bond and Kara have a good chemistry. The scene when Bond is sent to assassinate Pushkin is a highlight of the series.
This is by far the worst opening titles though, Binder must have been really bored by this stage, there was no charm to it and the song didn't help. I also wish Koskov had been a bit darker and ruthless when he's revealed as the villain, he was a bit weak.
Thoroughly enjoyed it overall... might watch it again soon :)
Even hoping that my opinion would change, it didn't. GF is still one of the most boring Bond movies ever, and I really don't understand why many people consider it a classic. There were good moments, like the PTS, which has a great fight, the Miami Beach scenes, the DB5 chase, and Fort Knox, but that's it. The rest of the movie is boring and uninteresting, with the worst Bond girl ever to walk the screen. Miss Galore is one of the biggest factors in ruining the movie for me, and the fact that there's such little action. Also, the movie ends WAY too quickly, and that fight with Goldfinger is pathetic. Anyway, it's definitely one of my least favorite Bond movies.
May be the peoples favorite in the Bond stakes but even some hardened enthusiasts will admit it's not above mediocre. Pity really as Connery was only slightly past his supreme best but the sum total is a rather dull letdown, it will never change for me
Good to see that someone else shares my view on Goldfinger! Back when I was starting out as a Bond fan, I rather liked GF. Now however, it has just taken a nosedive in the last few months.
Last word on it, as it's not that bad a film all said, but the main bone of contention is that it's simply dull and lifeless and there's a definite lack of excitement or vigor about proceedings. Fort Knox ending/Bomb timer may well be the best part of it, most exciting without question
The 2nd half of the film set in California tends to look more like the typical mid-1980s TV action show(like Matt Houston or The Fall Guy) than a proper big budget Bond film. I like Bond best when he's in more exotic locations.
