I recently watched GoldenEye. The last time was probably a good 5 years ago, and I just LOVED it! Between this and Casino Royale (both in my top 5), I really wish Martin Campbell directed more Bond movies!!
I actually loved Pierce in this one! I guess years of not seeing his movies and all the 'bad talk' about him on the internet clouded my judgment, but no-- Pierce was VERY cool in this flick! (mind you, I also haven't recently watched TND or TWINE)
I built up in my mind the notion that he 'vogued' his way through the whole movie, but he only did it once: when he steals the little boat and speeds off to try and stop the helicopter theft- SUPERMODEL FACE, lol He looked like Zoolander right then!

I still wish Dalton was in this movie, but Pierce definitely rocked!

All in all, great movie; still holds up today- GREAT PTS- I loved the music (except for the Ferrari race). GoldenEye is awesome!

I just finished watching "Thunderball". It was only the third time I watched it and it's starting to grow on me.
Excellent !! I suggest some MR for you as well !! :-bd
Those 2 actually make an excellent double feature. Both Bond actors at their best and most comfortable and superconfident in the role. Both have similar final battles(undewater in TB/outer space in MR). Both have carnival/parade scenes. Both feature a 3rd female lead who serves as an agent assistant to Bond(Paula in TB/Manuela in MR). Both feature Bond trapped in a tortuous death trap(the rack in TB, the centrifuge trainer in MR). Both huge megahits.

Also the fourth Bond films for Connery and Moore.

    A View to a Kill (1985)

    5/10

I personally think a) Christopher Walken and b) Roger Moore's chemistry with Patrick Macnee save AVTAK film from the scrap heap.

I really love all of Walken's moments with my favorite scene being Howe's murder...I've seen that scene 100 times but this time it made me laugh out loud for some reason.

Moore gives a slightly tired, but mature performance...a shame he looked so damn old. The BIGGEST problem in AVTAK I think was that the film completely ignored Moore's excessive age. He's running around, doing summersaults, bedding women half (if not less than half) his age; it just is not believable...a different approach should have been taken for sure..had the film acknowledged Moore's age and showed Bond as an aging spy, the film would've worked a little better.

Even with that stupid Beach Boys thing.

    @SJK91

I rank A View To A Kill a little lower than that.... i actually consider it the 3rd worst Bond movie on my own personal ranking...

a lot of that has to do with the fact that Moore did not feel like Moore in the film - meaning, that at the time they wrote the movie, they weren't sure if he was coming back for one last outing. So the writers wrote a very generic Bond - and it shows... not only did Moore age horribly from OP to AVTAK, but he looses a lot of his charm as well, and plays the role too serious for what we were accustomed to seeing from his Bond... this is why i've maintained that this should've been Dalton's first Bond film...... but it's been so long - that while it's nice to imagine what Tim could've done in the movie, it's hard to picture it without Roger....

but not even Tim could've saved the film from it's weakest link.. the dreaded Tanya Roberts aka Stacey Sutton..... while she was a knockout in terms of looks, her acting ability was not even close to the same level - and too be a Bond girl in that era, I wasn't expecting anything amazing, or emotionally moving.. but even still, her performance was that dreadful... "I doubt thaaat." ... oye, what a mess she was....

this film's only saving grace, (no not Grace Jones) - was Christopher Walken as Zorin, and not to mention another amazing score turned in by Barry... that's about it.... this film is barely watchable with Walken - it would be completely unwatchable without him IMO..

    @haserot

A View to a Kill is actually second worst on my Bond list. (Golden Gun is my personal least favorite Bond film) So it's pretty damn low, lol

    The 5/10 was the rating.

But pretty much everything you said in your post I agree with!

    You Only Live Twice (1967)

Entertaining Bond flick with some iconic moments. The ninja sequences were great as was Donald P, the final battle in the volcano set and the John Barry score. However, I'm going to have to side with a lot of people on here and say the one big weakness was...Sean Connery. He just sounded like he was reading his lines most of the time and didn't seem to have the enthusiasm he had in the previous films. A rather flat performance unfortunately. Also, the two Bond girls didn't really leave that much of an impression either. Not that they were to blame, it's just they didn't get a lot of time with Bond. Aki, the better of the 2, gets killed too early.

However, as I said the film has many "classic Bond" sequences. The scenes with Bond creeping around the volcano set are cracking stuff.

Not as good as the previous films but still good fun IMO.

Wow! A lot of hate for AVTAK around here. Personally, I've always had a soft spot for it, considering it was the first one I bought on DVD. For a while, I only AVTAK and GE, so I'm prone to defending those two more than others. Even if I had bought it last, I'd still probably find it thoroughly enjoyable! There are simply too many great moments! However, the noticeable drawbacks have already been noted, like Stacey Sutton and the cheesiness that surrounds some of the action sequences, particularly the fire truck escape. I absolutely cannot stand the San Francisco police chief. What a loser! But in any event, I like AVTAK more than most people. On a side note, I love Duran Duran's title song!

Ha, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for it too :) It's not a great film and it's pretty low in my rankings but it does have a charming, cosy feel about it. Like it was the end of an era.

Moore, Macnee and Walken are all good in it - Walken especially.

It was also made in 1985 - a very significant year for me ;)

TB. I get to host weekly movie nights up at my college, and the last time I had one, it was my choice, so I went with GF, followed by TB.

Awesome, Creasy! Tell me: how was the 'college audience' reaction to an old Bond movie? Did they like it?

I recently watched Moonraker. Found Drax to be hilarious and I like him much more than I used to-
Moore looked close to his best as Bond. Loved Corrine Clery more than Goodhead (used to be the other way around)
Still rolled my eyes at Jaws meeting the girl. You know what would have been awesome? Play that scene the same way, with the lovey music too, but when the girl sees Jaws' teeth, she runs away screaming! If only....
To conclude, it was a solid Bond flick, save for a few parta, and of course the space laser battle.
  • LTK on ITV earlier on...7/10

Too sadistic for my tastes, and it's a bit convenient how nobody even recognises Bond until he's got a chance to destroy Sanchez's cartel. Still, Dalton's terrific and it's a solid entry in the series.

I bet it was cut to shreds much like Benecio del toro? ;) I don't really understand y itv would put a much darker, more brutal entry like that on In the middle of the day.

Also, would M really have re-hired Bond that willingly if he'd just gone AWOL, abandoned his mission and ruined an undercover operation?

The last time we saw M he was saying "he's got to be stopped"?

I'm still very disappointed with my Special 007 Edition DVD of License to Kill. They made so many unnecessary cuts, in particular, the torture of Felix Leiter, Krest's head exploding, Dario getting shredded, and Sanchez being burned to death. I wish I had bought it on the uncut Ultimate Edition. I've looked everywhere on Youtube for several of these originally uncut scenes, and the only one I found was Krest's exploding head. I found Sanchez's original death one time, but it's not there anymore. Why did the cut LTK on Special 007 Edition?????!!!

I like to think that M did allow Bond back into the fold, but not until re-earning his LTK. That could have been the PTS of Bond#17.

    Goldfinger (1964)

Nothing to say that hasn't been said before. Stone cold classic. It's not perfect but it represents everything that made Bond so sucessful. The action, the fun, the girls and the humour. Connery and Blackman are great, the direction is classy and stylish and the music is perfection. Daniel Craig needs to re-watch this before he starts filming B23.

    9/10

    Live and Let Die (1973)

Not bad but something of a step down from GF. It looks and feels far less classy than its predecessor. Roger Moore is decent enough but it doesn't quite seem like he's settled into the role properly as of yet. As a result it sometimes seems like more of a stop-gap between DAF and TSWLM.

Jane Seymour - hubba hubba though ;)

MR. It was my 10 year old nephew's first Bond film and I thought that would be a perfect choice. He enjoyed it and exclaimed during the space laser battle "Cool! That's like Star Wars!"

It was very enjoyable! There were always a few students that would show up when I played any Bond film, but for the most part, the theater was emptier than other showings I had to give, like Buried, Hachi: A Dog's Tale, and others. Either way, it was very enjoyable getting to spend a night watching Bond movies in a theater that I've never seen in a theater before. Come the fall semester, I'll get to do the movies again, so I'll be sure to show even more greats for at least my pleasure, haha.

FRWL followed by CR. Love both deeply, and they make my top 5 easy. On my way to clean out the Connery cabinet and then try to watch QoS without cursing.

DAF last night. I love Tiffany Case and especially the mood of this film. Sean is a sort of Marlowe-Bond mix in this one. His toupee was a shame.

    Die Another Day
Eh....it was okay. It's definately moving towards the rock-bottom of my list. I absolutely hate Gustav Graves and Zao. Ugh! The worst Bond villains ever, next to Dominic Greene and Elvis. I cringe at these lines said by the above mentioned: "How's that for a punch line?" and "Look, parachutes for the both of us! Whoops! Not anymore!"
(barf) Please! Spare me this horrid dialogue! Not only that, but Jinx was used very poorly, and I hate her attitude of "I can do anything you can do." Well, sorry Jinx, but even you had to be rescued by Bond. As everyone and their mother already knows, the CGI is utterly ridiculous and puts to shame what the old Bond movies worked so hard to achieve.
I could go on, but then again, you already know all this. The point is, DAD has really lost it with me.

@00Beast *Bond jumps off hovercraft, grabs bell, swings, and lands* "Saved by the bell."

After I saw that, I knew the film was going to be extremely amazing and Oscar-worthy!

Yes DAD is terrible... But Brosnan's best performance is from that film.

You mean Brosnan's beard gives the best performance in that film.

    License to Kill.

I took the liberty to compare the SE with the UE. I bought the UE because of the few seconds inserted compared to the SE. This time around, I found the SE better, even though it is a few seconds shorter than the UE. Last time I preferred the UE, because it makes the film a little bit ´dirtier´, this time I thought the SE is more elegantly cut in those moments.

Anyway, fantastic film! Much like Craig´s two entries it´s not much of a Bond film in the traditional sense, but very strong on its own, which I appreciate very much.
  • Goldfinger

    7/10

To me, this was the Bond film that really got things going and really laid out the elements that would come to be known as essential to the Bond character on the big screen. It was also the first time John Barry not only wrote the score, but the title song with the lyrics at the beginning as well. Shirley Bassey truly is THE diamond of the Bond series. The sound of her voice always pleases me. ;)

Currently watching Casino Royale, my favorite Bond film at the moment. Really looking forward to the as yet untitled Bond 23 film though! :D

I am serious. Brosnan's best performance is in DAD, his worst in GE...

To me his best was probably TND. He was great in GE but less "boyish" in Dies.
