So I read up on Jamie Lee Curtis in the next Halloween- apparently this is a sequel to part 2 only.
This ignores ALL the ones after part 2, including H20 & Resurrection (which she even was in!)

This will literally be Halloween 3. Pretty cool, but I'm sure it will confuse people left and right, lol

And now we also have Linda Hamilton reprising her role as Sarah Conner in the next installment of The Terminator, which like Halloween, picks up after Terminator 2 and ignores all the others. Interestingly, it's also based on a new original story by James Cameron.

@bondsum, I'm typically seeing people tout 'Drag Me To Hell' as one of the better ones in the last decade or two, so I really have to rewach it. I remember seeing it upon release (was around the time I watched so many films on a weekly basis they all blended together) and not being too impressed, so perhaps I wasn't in the right mindset or I didn't pay enough attention.

Damn, Netflix released their October calendar schedule, and Cult of Chucky is listed for an October 3rd release. Had no clue it was even releasing so soon, let alone on Netflix. Maybe it's just been on VoD for a while now and I had no clue.

'Drag Me To Hell' is one of the best comedy movies, up there with Airplane etc.
It's so funny in places, I remember watching it with my daughter and we were both
    laughing out loud.

That's why then. For some reason I was under the impression it wasn't coming until November or so. Eager to check it out in a few weeks.

This would have happened with Alien as well if Ridley Scott hadn't vetoed it in favour of a dull disappointing film that not only had a lot of the same issues that made people hate Prometheus but also managed to turn off those of us who actually enjoyed that film.

Bitching a bit but I think it's relevant to this thread; Covenant was so disappointing for me. Would have loved a proper Alien film with Ripley Newt and Hicks. Would have enjoyed a Prometheus sequel that expanded on the mysteries that film presented. Instead their take away from the Prometheus criticism just seemed to be "people want the Alien" and we got the absoloute worst of both worlds in a mystique destroying disappointing mess. Still can't believe that they thought having this terrifying unknown creature be the result of experiments done by a human created android was a good idea.

It's my understanding that it was Fox that vetoed the Ripley Newt movie, not Scott. I'm sure if Fox had seriously wanted to milk the Alien franchise further with another movie, they would have done so. I honestly don't believe that they answer to Ridley Scott. The first Alien was great as a stand-alone haunted-house-in-space concept; the second worked because it was Cameron riffing-off a war movie but with Alien bugs. The problems with Alien as a franchise is that they have a great monster designed by Giger, but not much else. There was never any proper backstory, everything was kept vague, which was what made the first two work. The problem with Scott is that he is a brilliant visualist but not necessarily a great story developer/writer. Without someone like Dan O'Bannon to reign him in, Scott has a tendency to go off the reservation with some of his madcap ideas.

But I agree with you on the Alien creature being the result of experiments done by a human-created android was a terrible idea from the start. But then so was turning the giant elephantine Space Jockey into a race of pale humanoids wearing that carcass as a suit. I think the main reason why Covenant was so disappointing to audiences was the one chance to show the Engineers' home planet was totally squandered and such a massive letdown. I guess we all imagined an amazing Gigeresque habitat in our minds, not some eco-friendly landscape that resembled New Zealand in early Spring and that was totally devoid of Engineers. The movie also felt severely restricted by budget cuts which was solely down to Fox, and not Scott. I think a Fox also has to carry a lot of the blame.

But back to T6... I'll be interested to see what Cameron has cooked up for the movie. I can't wait to find out more.

I think a lot of people probably like DMTH because it has a fully developed story, and it isn't set in someone's attic or basement for the majority of the film. Sure, it has humor. Didn't the recent Baywatch movie steal the same yucky contents of a corpse falling into a person's open mouth routine? But then DMTH does steal wholesale from Curse of the Demon, so there can't be any complaints about plagiarism.
  • @bondsum I'm probably being a bit unfair because this is all purely speculation but there's been a lot of debate about it with a popular theory being that Scott was upset about the limelight being taken off his film, so he persuaded Fox not to bother and instead of Prometheus: Paradise Lost, which he originally said was going to be about David and Shaw, and instead we got Alien: Covenant, which barely follows through on Prometheus and is pretty much a bog standard Alien film with some mystique destroying origins stuff tacked on. The theory is that this change came from the hype around the initial Alien 5 artwork.

From what I've read, this line of thinking basically stems from Prometheus 2 not seeming to go anywhere but then development suddenly picking up not long after the Alien 5 hype, and Scott telling people that Alien 5 was just a pitch when asked about it, saying there never was a script. While Cameron and Weaver both said before that they'd seen the script and loved it. And to me it sounds believeable because I've read before that Scott was never happy about losing control of the franchise after the first film.

I'm sure Fox have the final say but I think Scott definitely would have some pulling power there as well. I think that he didn't want it to happen, Fox obliged because the prospect of them putting money behind two Alien films so close to eachother always seemed doubtful, and the original Prometheus 2 ideas were scrapped in favour of the more traditional Covenant as a compromise between him and the studio since the idea of a new proper Alien film had generated a lot of buzz.

Another popular theory is that because Prometheus 2 didn't seem to be going anywhere, Fox started talks with Blomkamp to provide incentive to Ridley to hurry up and make the film, with no actual intention of making Alien 5.

I thought Scott was executive producer on Alien 5, but claimed that there was no script for it, just a 10-page treatment that never got any further? It was just a pitch, nothing more. It's probably easy to forget that Neill Blomkamp had just come off the back of two underwhelming and underperforming sci-fi movies himself, so maybe Fox just didn't have the same faith as a small minority of fans did as to invest in the director, possibly trying to avoid another Alien3 scenario repeating itself. With the sequel to Covenant now highly suspect, I'm sure Neill Blomkamp might get another go with his pitch. But I'm beginning to think that there just isn't enough Alien fans out there to make these movies worthwhile making anymore. Certainly not on a big budget.

The Xenomorph are just not that compelling anymore, as flawed as Prometheus is my interest was in the Engineers and there reasoning for wanting to destroy humanity.

Covenant was two different films pulling in opposite directions, due to there being some pretty dreadful script writers in Hollywood and Scott keeps working with them, either that or studios making sure checklists are ticked.

I'd totally believe that Scott had a hand in the decision to stop Blomkamp's Alien 5, absolutely. As someone else mentioned, I think he didn't enjoy having the limelight taken off him in the series, and he likely realized at some point that 'Covenant' wasn't winning any awards, so he took the "it'll be too confusing for audiences" angle so they'd can it, and now he needn't worry about being upstaged in the franchise.

A shame. There's really no backtracking now, these films will continue to be generic and forgettable until there's a massive shake-up or some new director is brought in.

I don’t know whether it’s been reported elsewhere here, but I was surprised to find out that there is an official sequel to Meir Zarchi’s 1978 cult classic I Spit on Your Grave (Day of the Woman) that will be released next year. Like Halloween and The Terminator, it features the return of Camille Keaton, who played Jennifer Hills in Zarchi’s original film! The movie is called, Spit on Your Grave Deja Vu.

I hate rape/revenge movies. It's worse than the torture porn movies like Saw and Hostel. They're not scary and all they do is piss me off. So much so that I have to turn around and watch a Punisher movie just to see bad guys get blown to bits to make me feel better. Count me out of any sequels and remakes to trash films like that.

A guy here in his 40s is charged for raping his daughter, as punishment for her embracing western values. How is that for real life horror. And presumably she will learn to embrace the values of her father s home country instead.

Forgive me but I'm confused by your comment. Are you saying someone on this forum has been charged with rape?
Either way, that's horrible but not the type of horror I was talking about. I mean true horror from the horror genre. I'm not fearful when watching rape/revenge movies, I'm angered. They do nothing for me in the way of the horror genre and shouldn't be classified under it.

Oh, that makes sense now. That is horrible! But like I said, in the horror genre it does nothing for me but anger me.

I totally understand your displeasure at these types of movies @QsAssistant. Torture porn, or rape, isn’t my cup of tea either. The original SOTG was classified as a “video nasty” in the Eighties and subsequently banned here in the U.K. until over a decade later when it was finally released on DVD. That said, one cannot deny that the original SOYG was quite artfully and tastefully photographed and was much better than Wes Craven’s (also banned) the Last House on the Left, which also featured a combination of nasty torture and rape. But let’s not forget who really started this type of movie - the legendary Ingmar Bergman with his 1960 brilliant movie “Virgin Spring” starring Max Von Sydow, which is considered a masterpiece of cinema and, personally, I think has every right to still be called a masterpiece, especially when modern trash by filmmakers such as Darren Aronofsky can be incorrectly labeled masterpieces by misinformed nerds. Rape, like cannibalism, is a taboo that the majority of us find truly horrifying, therefore it’s only to be expected that some filmmakers will choose these subjects to push the boundaries. Some critics and people had the same reaction against the original Death Wish movie starring Charles Bronson, when his daughter gets horrifically raped by a gang of housebreakers. Personally, I thought Death Wish was a great movie back in the 70s - god knows what the new one with Bruce Willis is going to be like? My guess is it’ll be totally waterdowned trash for the 21st century and have Bruce’s daughter rendered comatose by a falling plant pot. So, for the record, the only type of movie on this subject I can give a pass to is both Virgin Spring and 1974s Death Wish. But splatterpunk horror is very popular, so I expect some here will be quietly interested by the release of this new SOYG movie, as they might with Francesca Eastwood‘s similar-themed new movie M.F.A. which is getting a good buzz on the festival circuits.

Does anyone else follow the Dead Meat channel on youtube? The latest video continues a look at the kill of the Childs Play series (there has also been one for each Friday The 13th film) with Curse Of Chucky:

A few questionable uses of CGI aside, CURSE is my favourite Childs Play since the original film. Rebooting the tone of the series was a wise decision. Also, Fiona Douriffs Nika was one of the most likable horror protagonists of recent years.

I agree, @MajorDSmythe. Curse is the best of the bunch. It's got it all: good comedy, great performances, suspense and enough continuity indulgences for any horror geek to obsess over.

Cult is high on my radar now. Can't wait for the bluray to arrive.

I love Judy Greer! Can't say much at all about the Halloween movies post II, but with Carpenter doing the music and the cast so far, I'll say this project has my attention.

Thankfully it'll ignore everything that came after the second one, so you won't be missing out on anything!
  • Excellent news. I've seen the unrelated Part III and the Kevin Williamson one, but don't care for either.

Excellent news. I've seen the unrelated Part III and the Kevin Williamson one, but don't care for either.

There are bits and bobs throughout the rest of the series that I enjoy, but after the second installment, nothing comes remotely close to that same level of quality. I can't even recall the last time I watched a Halloween installment in full that wasn't the first two.

Doesn't get much worse than the Rob Zombie installments, however. They were terrible to me. Removed the dread/scares and upped the gore, with real poor acting to boot and an overly long backstory we didn't need.
