Yeah, DAD sure is one faithful adaptation of Moonraker, isn't it. Can't tell them apart... :)

It is an update and perhaps closer to MR than the RM movie.

In that the villain has assumed an identity to become a much valued member of English society, instead of a bridge match at Blades we get a fencing/sword fight match, there is no rocket aimed at London but a satellite armed with an awesome laser gun that would give his original homeland its revenge on the world.

But the Drax-like character in DAD is closer to the source novel than DRAX from the movie.

I have read the novels, and I am aware of the (lack of) minor plot similarities. One thing is certain though: Fleming should consider himself very lucky he didn't live to see Die Another Die. The key word here is "tone", not plot similarities.

The fact is that the Moonraker novel is a classic spy thriller whereas Die Another Day is a corny, CGI crapfest of a film that is a disgrace to the memory of Ian Fleming. Die Another Day is to Moonraker as Pluto is to the Sun.

@SaintMark, these categories are out of 5, not 10.

    DAD

    1. Direction - 3 (the director completely balled it up. BAD TAMAHORI!)
    2. Screenplay - 2 (I wonder just how many changes were made between script and screenplay)
    3. Script - 2 (too many cheesy puns; too many homages)
    4. Plot - 3 (an excellent start descends into what seems like self-parody)
    5. Action - 6 (heaps of action, but some of it's too generic)
    6. Main Villain - 4 (1 point for 'my dreams can kill you'; 3 points for being something of a swashbuckler)
    7. Main Bond Girl - 3 (I don't hate Jinx, but she's too generic and her character is never fleshed out. A decent actress got wasted here)
    8. Bond - 4 (apart from all the puns, there's some very Bondian interactions here- your time will come, Zao; every Bond and M scene; Raoul)
    9. Sets - 5 (the ice palace gets way too much flack, that and the geodesic domes are awesome, but what other Bondian sets are there? The abandoned station is pretty cool though)
    10. Music - 2 (I don't remember much of it, so that tells me something)
    11. Cinematography - 2 (no real stand out shots in this one I'm afraid)
    12. Fleming - 2 (being tortured in a North Korean prison; 'abandoned station for abandoned agents', every scene with M, and the conversation with Raoul)

    13. Supporting Cast - 3 (decent cast, but most of them got wasted)
    14. Main Titles - 4 (putting aside the song for a minute, the title sequence was a genius move to include Bond and the torture methods fire, ice & scorpions)
    15. Plausibility - 2 (Bond's capture/torture was most plausible; but the gene therapy/space laser angle completely upstages it)
    16. Pace - 4 (I like the pace- never had an issue with it)
    17. Editing - 3 (nothing special, but could've been much worse)
    18. Tilt - 3 (an entertaining film, but really, I prefer my Bond films to be more cerebral)

    Total - 57/150
    Percentage - 38%

    DAD

    1. Direction - 1 (Lee Tamahori has that unique ability to make animal porn look good in comparison)
    2. Screenplay - 4 (One of those seemed like a good idea at the time films)
    3. Script - 2 (I gave it an extra point because it can also be used as toilet paper and bird cage lining)
    4. Plot - 2 (too ridiculously unrealistic)
    5. Action - 3 (there was the fencing scene)
    6. Main Villain - 1 (an North Korean army man presumably drowned only to turn up as an Argentinian diamond CEO. Right..............)
    7. Main Bond Girl - 1 (Halley Berry outdid herself as Catwoman, thus raising the eternal question "How the **** did Halle Berry win an Oscar"?)
    8. Bond - 7 (Can't fault Pierce for this explosive diarrhea fest)
    9. Sets - 5 (For using actual shots of London)
    10. Music - 2 (10 points for "London Calling" -8 for Madonna)
    11. Cinematography - 1 (CGI is not cinematography)
    12. Fleming - 1 (Fleming was honored by having his grave p****d on)

    13. Supporting Cast - 2 (There's Raoul and Miranda, then there's everyone else)
    14. Main Titles - 1 (Madonna, need I say more)
    15. Plausibility - 1 (US Marines involved in laser fights in space is more plausible)
    16. Pace - 2 (For not ending fast enough)
    17. Editing - 1 (For allowing parasailing CGI in Iceland)
    18. Tilt - 2 (For the ability to tilt my eyes in rolling fashion watching this)

    Total - 39/150
Percentage - 26% (I think I was too generous with some of the scores)

When tested as a highschool student we were rated from 1-10 with a 1 even if you were caught cheating.

So DAD deserves a 1 at least as they did deliver without cheating. ;)

It's not specified in the OP, and zeros have been given out to other Bond films in the past, so I assume giving a 0 is perfectly fine.

How does it compare with your own ratings/rankings?

Very close, but with mine a little lower. Looks about right, though.
    The community = 39.92%
    Mine = 38%

Whilst reading other peoples ratings, what stood out for you?

The zeros some members have in certain categories tell me they're either not looking at it objectively, or they've overlooked something. For example: zero for Fleming? Are the scenes with Raoul or the notion of an 'abandoned station for abandoned agents' not Flemingesque- at least in the smallest degree? The same can be said for the plausibility. Not forgetting the gene therapy clinic of course- but shouldn't Bond being captured and tortured in a North Korean prison for 14 months warrant the plausibility factor at least 1 point?

You actually done the questions! I haven't bothered for the past couple of films as no-one was taking part.

And there is some truth in what you said methinks....
