With all the voodoo it surely has loads of atmosphere.
I can understand the dislike of the humour, but the music is right up there. One of the best Bond soundtracks, and a great blaxploitation/70s score too.

I needed more...there was just no tension,which didn't seem right .

You had a lot of balloons explode for you as a child?
Of course I can only give the music a 5. The score is a very poor effort in comparison to what Barry delivered.
I never understood why they didn't return to George Martin when John Barry wasn't available in the future.
I agree with what you're saying; it's just that this score doesn't feel like a Bond score to me. Inserting the Bond Theme isn't enough to capture the 007 charm. I actually rather like the LALD score as a standalone listening experience.
I rather like his version.

great film. Has always been in my top3. And is No.3 in the moment. I am only not a big fan of the Bond girl and the boat chase. The rest is amazing.

1. Direction – 10 (Terence Young on fire. I think he works with the actors very well here. Especially seeing he has ones of the calibre of Connery, Shaw, Lenya and Armendariz. The way he develops Grant as a threat in the background visually is excellent. Young conveys so much dialogue free in this film.)
2. Screenplay – 10
3. Script – 10 - (The dialogue between Kerim Bey and Bond, Grant and Bond, Klebb and Tatiana. All wonderful stuff.)
4. Plot – 10 (Great plot. Real highlight of the film. There are a few logic questions - name me a Bond film without them - but the plot is intriguing and unfolds beautifully.)
5. Action — 9 (I know this doesn't appear to have a lot of action - but when it does have the action it's top draw. The Grant fight is magnificent. I like the wild Gypsy Camp fight set to the music of '007 Theme' - both of these are iconic Bond sequences to me. I actually think the helicopter chase is underrated - some pretty good stunt work - especially for 63'. I'd say the Boat chase is the only slightly ordinary sequence - so a point off for that.)
6. Main Villain – 10 (Lotte Lenya is brilliant - her scene with Tatiana alone is great. Klebb is one of my favourite villains in the series and FRWL Blofeld is actually my favourite representation of the character in the series so far!)
7. Main Bond Girl — 9 (Dianella Bianchi has a naïve charm about her. She and Connery have great chemistry in the initial seduction scene and the playfulness in the train compartment. And she gets to ice Klebb with a decision between love and duty. And it's a nice build for her character - similarly Domino gets to vanquish her tormentor in Thunderball which endears her as a developing character to the audience. Not quite up there with Vesper or Tracy but a little underrated in general for me.)
8. Bond – 10 - (Connery on absolutely amazing form. He crushes it in these first three Bond films. He is cold war cool and untouchable as 007.)
9. Sets – 9 - (I love the Spectre sequences. The chess room with the matte painting roof. The train compartment and dining car is classic Bond and even reminds me of North by Northwest - which is a good thing! The film oozes intrigue and class.)
10. Music – 9 (I love Barry's work here. 'Spectre Island' is a personal favourite. I love both versions of the title track and of course it has '007 Theme' used to it's best in the gypsy camp sequence. I also really like the use of Dr No music in the helicopter showdown and the little stings when 007 is walking on the platform waiting for his contact and Grant is stalking him in the background in the train.)
11. Cinematography – 10
12. Fleming — 10 (My favourite Bond novel pretty faithfully done. I think this maybe the most Fleming of all the Bond films in some ways.)

13. Supporting Cast – 5 (Kerim Bey, Red Grant, Kronsteen, Blofeld, M and Moneypenny in their prime. Wonderful.)
14. Main Titles — 5 (I love the belly dancing and the use of the music - FRWL interpretation mixing into the Bond theme. It actually might not be the most visually exciting, but stylistically it sets up the exotic locations and the intrigue so well. Gets me excited for the movie.)
15. Plausibility — 5 (Pretty much one of the more plausible Bond films)
16. Pace — 5 (I love the pace of this film I can only think of one or two moments that could be improved. But the film's pace is part of its charm.)
17. Editing — 5 (Peter Hunt is on top form here. His rearrangement of the fifteen minutes post-titles is masterful.)
18. Tilt – 5 (My favourite Bond film.)
