Gotcha! An Error by Fleming

Near the end of Live and Let Die Fleming writes, "The first tears since his childhood came into James Bond's blue-grey eyes and ran down his drawn cheeks into the bloodstained sea."

Alas, in Casino Royale, Bond's previous mission, Fleming wrote, "On the morning of the third day a bloody nightmare shook him awake, trembling and sweating. There was a hand on his forehead which he associated with his dream. He tried to lift an arm and smash it sideways into the owner of the hand, but his arms were immovable, secured to the sides of his bed. His whole body was strapped down and something like a large white coffin covered him from chest to feet and obscured his view of the rest of the bed. He shouted a string of obscenities; but the effort took all of his strength, and the words trailed off into a sob. Tears of forlornness and self-pity welled out of his eyes*."

*Emphasis mine.

Not a big deal. Just thought I'd point it out.

    Good catch, @Perilagu_Khan! :-)

I guess Fleming wasn't too focused on that particular level of continuity. Still, sharp eyes you have there, sir.

All this tearful intensity. Sounds like Dalton...

I think, though, that this is pointed out in The Bond Files (2000, 2nd ed.) by Lane and Simpson or some such other book. I remember reading it. Good that you spotted it all on your own, @Perilagu_Khan!

Craig and Dalton are both close to the books, in their own way. Craig is like Lazenby, he's emotional and vulnerable. He's also like Fleming's Bond because he isn't really comfortable with killing in cold blood (at least in CR, they sort of forgot about this in QOS and SF).

Dalton shows the world weary, burnt out side of Fleming's Bond who was sick of his job rather than the emotional side that didn't like killing (he's sort of uncomfortable with killing in cold blood in TLD when he spares Kara but this goes out of the window later on, he's fine killing in cold blood in LTK). Basically he was the Bond from the TLD short story.

Indeed. Well said. I like to refer to the Dalton Bond as the one from TLD ss. too - The Nelson Touch Bond, as it says in the YOLT Times Obit. Interesting takes on Bond too, and along with that of the much-maligned Lazenby, probably the very best, too.

The charm of Fleming's Bond is that he could have his emotional reflective moments yet find his way back to being the deadly determined smooth blunt instrument that he is.
Maybe not as quickly as Connery-Bond but still he got back to being Bond.
