I certainly wouldn't boycott a beard helmed entry, maybe Craig's swansong should be a director he's previously worked with, Spielberg knows the character well and is a fan.

If he could pull off something like Raiders tempered with the strongest elements of the Craig era, sort of Raiders crossed with Casino Royale, a conclusion to the story in SPECTRE not relating back to the step brother nonsense then why not?

Although who am I kidding even if he did we are likely to get Crystal Skull rather than Raiders, I'm just not convinced anymore, SPECTRE really did do that much damage I question what the hell they are going to do next?

Possibly a rebooted version with a new Bond would be better for him to start with rather than cleaning up the mess that Mendes & P&W left behind.

Of the ones I've seen I've enjoyed, except for Munich, too much of a snooze fest. I also want to own #1 - #10 someday.

    17. Munich
    16. A.I.: Artificial Intelligence
    15. Jaws
    14. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    13. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
    12. Catch Me if You Can
    11. The Terminal
    10. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (not amazing but too underrated)
    9. War of the Worlds
    8. Hook
    7. The Lost World: Jurassic Park
    6. Minority Report (another underrated one. Also don't understand what about the ending kills it for everyone)
    5. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
    4. Jurassic Park
    3. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
    2. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
    1. Saving Private Ryan

    @QsAssistant, 'Munich, too much of a snooze-fest'?

Go to your room. There's no place for such blasphemy here.

lol I know, sorry. Everyone seems to enjoy that one but me. In fairness I've only seen it once and that was when it first came out on DVD (I think I was a teenager). Perhaps I should give it a second chance.

I've found a greater appreciation for certain films these days that I didn't enjoy as a teenager. Can't hurt to try!

    16-18. See below
19-31. The Spielbergs I haven't cared to watch yet (including in-production projects)
    32-52. TV stuff he did

    56. A.I.

Updated ranking; hard to really have it set in stone, but this is the best I have for now (obviously not an objective ranking; too hard with Spielberg's work. It's hard enough to try to rank them subjectively!):

    31. 1941
    30. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
    29. The Lost World: Jurassic Park
    28. Amistad
    27. The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn
    26. The Terminal
    25. Always
    24. War of the Worlds
    23. The BFG
    22. The Color Purple
    21. The Sugarland Express
    20. War Horse
    19. Empire of the Sun
    18. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
    17. Saving Private Ryan
    16. Munich
    15. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    14. The Post
    13. Bridge of Spies
    12. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
    11. Minority Report
    10. Duel
    9. Lincoln
    8. Schindler's List
    7. Catch Me If You Can
    6. A.I. Artificial Intelligence
    5. Jurassic Park
    4. Raiders of the Lost Ark
    3. Jaws
    2. Hook
    1. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Hook is the 2nd best film Spielberg has made?

    OK.......
  • Ottofuse8 wrote:
Temple of doom is underrated. It's not as great as raiders is for several reasons (a little too dark, jones portrayed as a superhero, etc.) but tbh I like the darkness of the film. It was unnecessary in raiders b/c the villains were pre-established as autocratic and to be feared, which was not the case in temple of doom, so things like child slavery, human sacrifice, etc. were necessary to cause us to really fear/hate the villains. Also Mola Ram is the best villain in the series. I actually prefer temple of doom over the last crusade (slightly) because I feel as though Spielberg wanted to ensure that the last crusade did not have the problems that temple of doom did, and it ended up a bit too light hearted.

I really like Temple Of Doom despite the cringey bits because they had the balls to do something really different and out there. Last Crusade is a lot of fun but it's pretty much a Raiders retread.

I like Crystal Skull as well to be honest. It's the worst one but I don't think it's an abomination like people make out. It's well made, has some great moments and a lot of cool ideas. I didn't even think Shia Labeouf was bad really, monkey swinging aside. Wasn't great but I thought he did fine with what the script gave him.

@LeonardPine It’s not. It’s my second favorite. I specifically stated it was a subjective list, and the film is super fun and nostalgic for me.

I can understand the nostalgia part, but the film is abysmal.

Probably his worst and a serious misjudgement on his part.

I'll just put it here that my favourite Spielberg is Empire of the Sun. Something I share with our friend Fukunaga.

The colour Purple is such a powerfull movie as is Schindlers list, Munich, Empire of the Sun, Saving Private Ryan, warhorse and Amistad. They show the otehr side of Spielbergs directing, it shows that he can do a lot more besides great popcorn movies. I am glad for any of those movies, I know of very few directors who were able to deliver such good movies with a message and/or darker background.

    7. Munich
    6. Lincoln
    5. Minority Report
    4. Schindler's List

    2. Raiders of the Lost Ark
    1. Jaws

Let me just say that the first 3 Indiana films are a marvel in their dynamism. Non of Spielbergs other work lives up to that level IMO. Perhaps he made more emotional, intellectual films but no greater cinematic diamonds IMO.

33 films to rank? This isn't simple.

I do like the Indiana Jones films best. But he's made many fine-to-great films.

As someone who was too young to see Jaws, but grew up on Indiana Jones, it was kind of hard ranking Jaws over Raiders... still watching Jaws as an adult, it’s a fantastic movie. It made Spielberg, Spielberg. I wouldn’t say Raiders is less than, it just came after.

As for the other Indiana Jones movies, I think they get less effective with each sequel. I use to think Last Crusade was better than Temple of Doom because it has a better story, but the overall comic and family elements of that movie really undermine character, suspense and action. Raiders is tops by a wide margin and then I rank them in order as they were released. Love Temple of Doom though, just be clear, one of the best opening sequences ever.
