Goldfinger: Bond does nothing for the majority of the film, gets captured multiple times, gets himself strapped to an atomic bomb. We praise this film.
GoldenEye: Bond loses a friend at the beginning of the movie, then goes through a major emotional struggle when that same friend turns out to be the villain. He's only captured a couple times, fights his way through the enemy, and doesn't use that fancy new BMW he gets for anything more than one scene of the radar appearing. We want this one the f*ck out of there.

    Explain this.

Just to prove how formative Goldfinger was, the post titles scene of Goldeneye uses the same Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger to try and reclaim some of that Bond iconography. Listen, I will admit that Goldfinger hasn't aged terribly well, and the middle is a bit slow, but the importance of that film upon the legacy of the James Bond film series cannot be understated. Goldfinger is original content, where as Goldeneye is a re-post...

The DB5 is the only positive thing to come out of Goldfinger. And, how is GoldenEye a "re-post" and Goldfinger "original" if Goldfinger is based on the book, and GoldenEye is an original story?

Large elements of Goldneye's plot is actually based on the novel Moonraker but meh

Goldfinger: Bond is told to investigate Goldfinger. He immediately catches Goldfinger cheating at cards and undermines him, gaining Jill Masterson as a possible informant on Goldfinger in the process. Goldfinger thwarts this by covering Masterson in gold paint. Bond again catches up with Goldfinger, turns the tables on his cheating. Their one upmanship continues as a dual to the death, with Bond tenaciously using his wits and resources to stay on Goldfinger's trail, despite being captured and nearly killed several times.

He uncovers Goldfinger's plot, does everything he can to warn others, converts the tough and seemingly unscrupulous Pussy Galore (whose punny name has been imitated several times but never quite matched) to his side, and vanquishes the seemingly invulnerable Oddjob. In the end, it's somebody else who defuses the bomb, technically meaning it wasn't Bond who thwarted Goldfinger's plot. But in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones spends the entire movie trying to keep the Nazis from getting their hands on the Ark, only for the Nazis to end up with the Ark and the artifact itself defeating them, and yet no one questions what a classic adventure film that is.

And Bond uses the car in all the ways it was foreshadowed he would in one great chase scene.

GoldenEye: Bond loses a friend who we are led to believe he has had a close partnership with for some time, despite thirty or so years of seeing 007 as a mostly solo op. Another hour passes before Bond gets his briefing from M. Once the plot finally gets going, it slows down again for Bond to romance a whiny Russian techie who doesn't know her butt from a chair, who tries to make him feel guilty for trying to kill someone who is clearly a dangerous criminal who has tried to kill her.

Is GoldenEye a bad movie? No. Is it better than Goldfinger? As a certain character from GoldenEye said, "I think not."

I simply feel that the more you look at Bond's actions and how he handles things in GF, films like DN, FRWL and TB crown over it big time. How he "converts" (interesting choice of word) Pussy from a lesbian to an apparently heterosexual woman is daft, to be frank. It's like an even stupider version of modern day society's "Pray the gay away," where instead of using the "power of God" and his scripture to erase away what the religious find to be "sinful," Bond uses forceful sex and brute force to make her switch teams. Come on, now. I know it's the 60s and all, but that's just a stupid sequence and shameful excuse of plot progression if I've ever seen one.

In Goldeneye, Bond wins the day man to man, using his wits and tactical fighting against Alec to get the edge and defeat him, while in Goldfinger he...screws a girl silly to turn her from a gay and very strong willed woman into a submissive and heterosexual one in just seconds. BULLCRAP. It's grade F writing and demeans the character that was developed as a strong willed woman earlier. I can just picture Bond talking with M back at MI6 when the mission is done and over with...

M: "Nice work defusing that situation in Kentucky, Bond. However did you manage it? Did you use Goldfinger's men against him through acts of subterfuge? Defuse the device with knowledge from your old army days? Use one of Q's gadgets to get Leiter and his team to help you stop it from blowing its top?"

Bond: "No, sir; none of that. I simply screwed her silly until she stopped being an uncooperative lesbian."

M: "Very funny, Bond. Now really, how'd you do it? B-bond? Bond, wherever are you going?"

It's actually quite sad when you think about it: if Pussy wasn't "converted" to an acceptable sexual orientation for 60s audiences, Bond would have failed his mission and Goldfinger would shine bright as the victor. Basically, Goldfinger is overrated to the maximum, DN, FRWL and TB are all way better, and GE is great too because Bond actually handles the mission honorably, thanks to a script that isn't absolute bollocks.

For fear of distancing ourselves further from the game at hand, I'll stop here.
