I have to admit when I first saw the trailer for Pacific Rim I thought it look rather stupid. After I watched it on DVD I was blown away and really wished I saw it theaters. I bought it on Blu-ray and watched it for the second time a few days ago and I already feel like watching it again!
I believe it was just confirmed that Guillmero Del Toro has been writing a script for a sequel and will be at the director's helm once again. It's rumored that Pacific Rim 2 will based much more on Voltron, meaning they may have transforming robots.

    Pacific Rim for me was a technical masterclass in what can be done with CGI. Godzilla will show how you really do add soul to a big monster movie.

    And to be honest when I watched the film I thought I'd get a more adult based film - the title is a Porn title.

    I didn't make it to the end, I got quite bored. Enjoyed Idris Elba hamming it up though.

    Same here. I couldnt finish it. I feel I need to give it another shot though.

    Looked great in the cinema, but the endless cliches drag it down on the small screen when there is not enough visual beauty to draw your attention away. Still impressed.

    Not seen it either for the same reason as you? But after reading your post I may have to check it out?

    I saw the film in theatres and wasn't too impressed by it. Del Toro clearly saw some Japanese anime like Neon Genesis Evangelion and went with it. Nothing wrong with that, I just don't like the story. The visuals are great though.

    IMHO, I thought the story was great, it actually made sense. Rather than just having giant monsters run around and destroy things for the sake of destroying things and having them fight other monsters for the sake of fighting other monsters (something that half the Godzilla films seem to do), they actually had a purpose.
    The Kaiju (monsters) are there to kill all humans and take of the world, not very original but at least it's a plot that works. The Kaiju adapt to the humans resistance and the Kaiju's engineers build bigger monsters to kill humans. When they keep getting bigger the humans build Jaegers (giant robots that take two humans to pilot) to fight the Kaiju.
    While the giant monster movie isn't an original idea anymore I feel Pacific Rim is an original movie that reinvented the giant monster genre.

    It was utter cheesy rubbish, can't believe I paid money to see this at the cinema, my Wife has never forgiven me for dragging her along to see it.

    I'm hoping Godzilla is much better, it certainly looks it, Del Toro is so much better making films in his own language, nothing he's made with Hollywood equals Cronos, Devils Backbone or his masterpiece Pans Labyrinth.

    Like Jocks. It's about people who fight in giant robot suits. Like Pacific Rim but mano e mano. American's vs. Soviets. It was made in the mid 80's. :))

    Good news (if you liked the first film) and bad news:

    The good news: Guillermo del Toro confirmed that he has been secretly working on a sequel (not a prequel, like many believed) to the film involving the two main Jaeger pilots. (More details in the link.)

    The bad news: He's been co-writing it with the guy who wrote the script for 'Elektra' and 'X-Men: The Last Stand.'

    For what it was, I really enjoyed 'Pacific Rim.' I thought the fight scenes were incredibly well done, and that's pretty much what I showed up for.

    It was retro-re-invented eye candy with cool fights & a nice score. Popcorn fun but as deep as a birdbath. How can that be bad? :))

    Hey, it was fun for me! I didn't expect anything more than some sweet fights and great visuals and I was more than impressed with what I was given. No complaints here! That was the summer when I went into every movie expecting entertainment and nothing more, and I enjoyed nearly everything I saw then.

    First time i watched it was on bluray, there were a few genuine whoa moments when i watched it. I know i said whoa! out loud a few times. Great fun when you accept it for what it is.

    Pacific Rim did a good job but fell short of being a stand out bit of Sci-fi. The CG was too good...i thought i was watching blokes in metal suits.

    @fire_and_ice, I actually screamed "Whoooo!" when I saw it in theaters. That's the only time I've had a loud, verbal outburst in the theaters before.

    I wouldn't entirely shit on Zak Penn co-writing with del Toro. His mid 2000's work might not be any good, but he's gotten story credits to X2 and THE AVENGERS as well. Plus, I wouldn't exactly call PACIFIC RIM's script to be master class or anything.

    Ha ha i can probably guess which parts. When the Kaiju collapsed on the beach was a whoa moment looked amazing. The scene with the younger version of the Japenese girl was very good. There were a couple of Kaiju slow mo mega Leap downward punches that were whoa! lol

    I don't remember what happened exactly because I haven't seen it since its theater release, but:
    I believe Gypsy Danger is underwater, and a Kaiju comes floating at it, and it raises its sword and slices through its belly or cuts it in half or something like that. I was blown away.

    Remember which scene you mention, visually impressive i thought. The film was much a homage from Del Torro, having watched the Japenese Godzilla movies when i was a kid like Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla etc. Knew where Del Torro was coming from, great fun.

    I was very surprised by this film when i watched it a few weeks back,it was very very good.

    Even better that 3 main characters are English.(Although one is playing an American and the other an Aussie!! )
