Just got home from a lovely meal out and turned on ITV+1 just as Rodriguez scored his first.

    WOW.

    Goal. Of. The. Tournament. ^:)^

And he has two. Lovely, lovely, and I am itching for the replays soon ...!

And they do it. First ever quarter cup final for Colombia and so well deserved. :)
Colombia vs. Brazil - really looking forward to that one!!

Yeah, baby - finally got to watch some highlights. The "beautiful game" for sure, most aptly named. Poetry in motion. :-bd

A few minutes into extra time, and we've already seen a huge dive by Hulk and a dangerous play that should've gotten one of the Brazilians sent off. Yet he only got a yellow, of course... this is tense... X_X

I don't think he deserved a red card for that, his intention was to kick the ball, not the goalkeeper. However, he should have been more careful, so a yellow card was appropriate. Here it is:

2 nil now. Rodriguez is f***ing brilliant. Anyway, I can't be the only one that's being driven insane by this every time the adverts come on?

That song is brilliant, a true classic. We are getting some random no-name samba here. This is from the movie Brazil:

    IMO, Van Persie wins.

Brasil was poor, and will undoubtedly get their canary behinds kicked by the surprisingly good and attractive playing Columbia.

Uruguay bit the dust, how appropriate.

Interestingly enough, it seems like Mexico's had more chances than the Netherlands so far. Could be in part due to the heat/humidity. The Netherlands is undoubtedly a better team, but they'll need to step it up and bring back that spunk they had against Spain.

I'm liking this Dutch-Mexican game. Has everything but a score.

Anyone know why that one Dutch player was substituted for 10 minutes in?

No idea. At first I thought it was an injury but De Jong wasn't showing any signs.
I'm also having a really hard time understanding the announcer's heavy accents, so I don't know if they explained it.

...And Mexico just scored as I was typing that...

I'm still rooting for the Netherlands ... they are perhaps running out of steam, though.

Ochoa has been on fire for Mexico.

Just had an epiphany. If Mexico holds off the Dutch and Costa Rica beats Greece later today. Two CONCACAF teams will play each other in the quarter-finals. This will assure that a CONCACAF team makes it to the semi-finals.

The Dutch with a bullet at the 88th minute. Nothing Ochoa could have done on that one.

there it is 1-1, which is what it should have been already due to a penalty not given at the end of the 1st half.

Based upon the play so far I am curious who will survive this game. Once more a great 2nd half.

And penalties with Ochoa does seem to be not the smartest idea.

It's all gone wrong for Mexico. Netherlands have been so so lucky. They've been really poor.
Not a penalty really but when they took him down at the end of the 1st half it was a full bodied penalty.

    2-1

The Mexicans have clutched defeat from the jaws of victory.

I did not expect this at all, but the 2nd half the Dutch decided to play football and showed that they can really play.

And the Oranje move on. I hate to say this in sports, but this looks like destiny.

HOT DAMN, there's that spunk I was talking about. GREAT effort from Mexico though, they've really impressed this tournament, especially for a team that barely qualified.

@Kerim- was that another teeth-themed pun, or a happy coincidence? :P

I bet Robben's diving would have gotten more attention if he was Spanish or Uruguayan. But since he's playing for Holland it's okay I guess...

But after all Holland didn't deserve to lose this. And Mexico became too defensive in the second half, playing too deep for too long. You usually get punished for that in football... I hope people are starting to realize this Dutch team is not as Incredible as some make them out to be. Although Robben is an attack by himself... and a diver...

    Both @Jackdagger.

Bummed that Mexico lost considering how well they've played after the CONCACAF qualifiers. This will leave a bad taste in their mouths for quite some time.

Robben gets plenty of sticky in the about his diving, here in the UK.

@Jobo when they floored him in the 1st half with two defenders who played Robben instead of the ball it was a bloody clear penalty.

And when you try to stop Robben in the penalty box then you have got to be bloody carefull and they were not. Not only Robben would go down but all players so stop being boring and acknowledge that Spain was overrated this tournament and perhaps the Dutch are actually better than expected. I did not expect them to win ALL three group games and even the next round against Mexico. And they did.
When they stopped playing defensive I saw a very powerful Dutch team, they are not brilliant but they have skills that belongs in the quarter finale.

Ok, it's now time for Costa Rica against Greece. I have prefered if México had won because if Costa Rica wins to the Greeks, it would have been better than against the Dutch. But I don't have to precipitate, for now is ours against Kristatos' team.

Mexico beat themselves. After they scored, they seemed not interested in attacking at all, even when they had a chance. You cannot win against a team like the Netherlands playing like that. I was rooting for them, but I suppose they got what they deserved.

Indeed the coach took one of his strikers was taken off in exchange for a defender two minutes after scoring 0-1, which is at any time is stupid choice, but against the Dutch that did have a very impressive amount of strikers in reserve it is the stupidest choice you can make as they will exchange defenders for strikers and thus opening the back for two strikers.

    @SaintMark

I never said they didn't deserve to reach the quarter finals did I? The ones I critisized was Mexico for their negative approach in the second half, and Robben for his diving. (After all he didn't dive on merely one occation but several...)

"Acknowledge that Spain was overrated this tournament"

Well, that's been my point from day one. Holland scored five against Spain because Spain were terrible, not because "The Netherlands were incredible" which seems to be the general opinion amongst pundits and fans. I have no problem accepting that Holland are performing much better than I expected. In fact I have already praised Van Gaal for making the most out of the players at his disposal.

This Holland team impresses with their tactical awareness, team spirit... and well... Robben. And they have been incredibly effective. That might be enough to win them the tournament. But it's not necessarily a "triumph for football" as so many claim it to be. I'm sorry if I've been offending you in the process of trying to counter the Holland hysteria. In fact I'm under the impression we have mostly agreed so far in our view of the Dutch team, the only real difference being I don't support them like you.

"triumph for football" Hell NO it most certainly is not.

That said I found Chili very impressive and they came to 2-0 against Spain were Orange did do a 5-1, which showed some incredible moments available from the Lowlands.

Tactical there is not much you can comment on the Dutch approach.

Diving is an international past time in this tournament and Robben playing the way he does defenders should be more than aware and not give him the chance. Having seen the disputed action I can only say that the defender did something stupid and Robben went with it.

As a player Robben is most dangerous player so far at this tournament, there are goal scorers but not many players that are so decisive in a game.,

The Holland hysteria is not shared by me, but if the basterds make it to the finale, I am hoping that 4 times is a charm.

Perhaps not a triumph for football but about bloody time we get that title as well, and if we do it with this team, the rest of the world knows that a good coach is important too.

Robben for me has been the standout player of the tournament so far. He was an attack on his own today. The only player Mexico just couldn't cope with no matter how much they tried.

And from an historical perspective Holland deserve a World Cup. I don't think they will win it this year either, but you never know. Worse teams have won the tournament before.

Was that a little jibe there?
