Well, considering the Saxons' history towards the Celts, that's no surprise. Not that the Normans were any better, of course.
I'lI take a hit for the team and admit to having some English ancestry. ;)
I've often thought the same thing. Apparently back in the 1980s, over 50% if Americans when asked would say that they had English ancestry. Since then, the number claiming any connection has plummeted to below 10%. Now everyone is Scots Irish or whatever, even though the number of English immigrants to the US was equal to those from Scotland and Ireland. There's some selective fiddling of family trees going on there.
Well, I am of Irish ancestry, but I relate far more to Jolly Ole England. Brought up with God Save The Queen, the trappings of Commonwealth, and of course James Bond, The Avengers, Monty Python, the Carry On Gang, Benny Hill, and the best rock bands the planet has ever seen. When I was a teenager, if rock bands didn't have an English accent, I couldn't take them seriously.
About the only tangible connection I have with Ireland is Lucky Charms cereal.
Used to really like that.
