@ClarkDevlin, I kind of agree with you about the lost art of western filmmaking. Nowadays it seems like western movies are more focused on blockbuster appeal, cramming in as many horse and carriage chases and shootouts as possible, when that's not the style and approach the genre was founded upon. Sure there's a lot of that stuff in classic westerns, but what's missing to a high degree now are casts that really mesh together and play off each other in thrilling ways, and stories that really explore the human condition in a degraded society, whether it's an outlaw turned noble, a lawman turned vigilante, the Joseph Campbell-esque mythic tales of drifters with no names coming in like ghosts to a town to take care of business and slip out again, and on and on and on.

There was so much mystery in old westerns as we were presented with dark, dangerous characters with pasts that carved them into tough bastards, and we felt every ounce of tension in every mexican standoff or full on gun battle that was had, with the help of really claustrophobic or wide framed camera shots aided by a soft, uneasy score in the background of it all. That art of filmmaking has been pretty lost on westerns now, I fear, to give way to that blockbuster appeal that sells tickets and is less of a risk financially than doing something truly innovative. I hope that what I've seen in the Magnificent Seven trailers, ie. wall-to-wall action, isn't the only thing the movie has to offer, and that it calls back to the old era more than I perceive it to so far.

What makes westerns interesting and memorable is to have that pulse-pumping action, but to also have it tied up intimately with fascinating and deep character portraits. It's why High Noon works, where a retiring sheriff and his town clash at a time of great danger, or Unforgiven in the modern era, where a bad man tries to achieve some sort of redemption near the end of his life, in whatever form it may come. Without great characters at the center that you care about, no genre film will work, and especially not a western. And the appeal and promise is there in the genre for creative thinkers to take hold of, because westerns are better than nearly any other kind of movie this side of noirs for making morally gray characters ones we feel attached to, questioning our own sense of right and wrong, good or bad as the film plays out.

That's what I want to see more of in this day and age. More True Grit, less Wild Wild West. ;)

I don't care what it takes, on top of Fast 8, 9 and 10 I want a solo trilogy with Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs!!

They seem quite cheery together, so I can only assume that Mirren won't be an antagonist in this, unless a twist involves that happening.

That it is. Hopefully it's solid!

Expectations must've been nonexistent; it uses the same blue/orange background motif that pretty much any generic poster uses, in my opinion. So overused.

Gal Gadot in shadow profile. This is the key point.

But if it was someone here making "fan art", it would be a work of genius, wouldn t it?

Above a certain size the monkey becomes less scary. 5-6m would be cool.

You seriously have to choose between a seriously hot chick with a sword and a monkey?

Is there any action film Helen Mirren is not in lately?

I like how the Hobbs pic looks as if he just put that sideways car there with his hands :-)).

I agree 100% this is setting up the King Kong vs Godzilla movie. I like the King Kong story but prefer it a bit more "grounded"

The idea of a King Kong vs Godzilla movie puts me so off. Godzilla was set up in the last film as a balancing force of nature. King Kong is a victim of civilisation. None of them is a "bad guy". To let them fight against one another is even more depressing than Marvel´s superheros constantly fighting each other :| .

Correct. I'm really hoping this movie turns out to be great. Ritchie needs a hit.

As for Kong, that's a huge-arse monkey! I love it.

@DaltonCraig007, that's great news. There are so many great films coming out over the next few months, but 2017 is looking absolutely fantastic as well, with Dunkirk, Wonder Woman, XXX3, Thor Ragnarok, Spidey, Alien Covenant, Skull Island, Kingsman 2, John Wick 2 & Blade Runner 2 to look forward to - not to mention the brute that is SW8.

Guilty as charged @DaltonCraig007. I have to get a copy of it soon. I just picked up the BvS extended cut on blu and will give it a watch in the next few days before getting onto the Bourne series. I've been tied up with the Republican Convention this week and next week is the Dem's, so I've got to fit these all in this weekend!

George Clooney will start filming his new film in October, the crime/comedy Suburbicon, which he is directing based on a script by the Coen's, and featuring Matt Damon, Oscar Isaac, Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson and Josh Brolin. To be released in late 2017.
