The Brosnan era gunbarrel is classic yet modern. I really want something closer to that for NTTD.
IMO, the gunbarrel design for QoS looked more like something you'd see on a SIMPSONS episode that spoofs Bond rather than the real deal.

I just don't like the Brosnan posing. It's like he tries to hard, as if he has a back injury...standing up that straight. Nah, the SP-gunbarrel for me is the best since Brosnan became Bond. But then again, it's also a matter of taste :-).

I like the alternate pose he did as seen in the TND trailer.

    Agreed x 3.

    I'd agree with that.

That's a good point; I'd forgotten about that.

Yeah, he just needed to bend the knees a bit :)

After this, is there any chance of a Gunbarrel at the beginning?

@Superintendent There had better be. It's entirely possible what they showed in the trailer isn't in the film, because Bond's getup there is in keeping with his meeting with Safin, which I highly doubt takes place during the PTS...? I mean, maybe, but based on how I think the plot's going to progress, doubtful.

There's just no reason the gunbarrel doesn't open the film up.

@Superintendent, I sincerely hope so. I'd be disappointed if that brief homage is all we get.

It wouldn't bother me if the gun barrel is missing again at the beginning. I just want a solid film.

I get that, I'm just no longer thinking of those tropes as anything more than a bonus.

Those opening gun barrels have signaled to casual and hardcore fans alike "Here we go; this is not a normal movie, this is a James Bond adventure, and you know what to expect!" for well over 50 years.

    +1

I don't care that much about the next film title at the end, but gunbarrel is something special and unique.

Sadly, now I think we won't be getting a regular gunbarrel in NTTD. I hope I'm wrong.

I actually think that final "gunbarrel" looking shot from the trailer was just there for the trailer. I think they filmed that, having it in mind as a potential trailer shot. I doubt the film begins or ends in that tunnel, so I don't think we have anything to worry about. Also, Fukanaga made that post about who did the gunbarrel the best. I might be looking too far into it, but I think he posted that to hint that it would appear in the film.

Maybe there’ll be two gunbarrels in the film ;)
  • I'm really concerned they'll use that shot as the 'Bond' gunbarrel and it will be placed in the middle of the movie.

Me, too. It would be typical of the Craig era tampering with it just for the sake of being different.

They better not screw with the gunbarrel. The reaction at the cinema when Spectre opened should have been an indicator.

That is the priority, but those little things are part of the charm and comfort that gets us through the weaker films and the more barren times. Those opening gun barrels have signaled to casual and hardcore fans alike "Here we go; this is not a normal movie, this is a James Bond adventure, and you know what to expect!" for well over 50 years. For fans that grew up in the Craig Era, that significance is probably already lost, but I've been going to these things since the '60s; when we lost that it saddened me. Like no longer getting the title off the next film at the end of the credits; that was always a great and exciting way to cap off a Bond movie and give you a little extra boost when you left the theatre (obviously pre-internet, so that really was where most of us would first learn the title of the next installment).

What a great post. 100% correct.

My honest thought, the more I look at this shot, the more I think they specially did it for the trailer/ad campaign (which happens a lot on such films anyway, alternate takes or shots for the trailer) And if it does end up in the final cut (which, for all we know, it may not - still some time to edit the film!), It looks like it comes late enough in the film anyway that having the traditional barrel at the start also wouldn't be a problem.
  • Well maybe the PTS isn't chronological and we'll go right into the action of the final showdown, starting with this gunbarrel. (Afterwards we'll see the flashback of the 90's/2015 and the follow up of the 2020 story leading to the final showdown.)
  • Please, you’re getting carried away!

It’s obviously something ‘cool’ to end the trailer on. It will probably wind up being in the final film. After all, why build such an expensive set, spend the morning positioning the camera, rolling film and rehearsing with Craig if it doesn’t serve a purpose.

It’ll just wind-up being an Easter egg. In fact, this isn’t the first time that a Bond film has incorporated a GB into the movie. Something very similar was done in TLD. It’s just a cool little visual motif that sends a pang of excitement down the audiences spines – as we are all in on the reference.

NSNA also did something very similar, although there it was incorporating the actual Gunbarrel itself.

You're right. Good catch, @Pierce2Daniel. I forgot about the spotlight.

Add me to the list of people who believe that shot was just for the trailer, even if it does end up in the actual film. I think people are reading too much into it. I don't think the film is going to be shown to us out of order except for one possible flashback sequence nor do I think the gun barrel is going to suddenly appear 2/3 through the film. I have good faith in Cary's appreciation of Bond.
  • The discussion here seems to be all over the place. Some comments are about the design of the gun and blood, some are about poses and walk, and some are about the music. I feel like there's been some apple and orange responses when comparing gunbarrels.

Oh and for the record, I think having the gunbarrel is important, but where it is in the film, how it looks, etc. should continually change as long as it makes sense. In the long run it'll give each film more identity.

In terms of design, I think they should take SP's barrel but have light change as it moves like the Brosnan ones.

Lastly, IMO the trailer shot is meant to evoke the appearance of the gunbarrel, but I sincerely doubt that it will serve as one. It's a tunnel not the barrel of the gun...

Hey, I figure I can post this here since it's related to the gunbarrel. I've decided that my first tattoo will be of the gunbarrel logo. I've scoured the internet, and I haven't seen someone do this tastefully. Is anyone aware of a good looking gunbarrel logo? The attached is the minimalistic idea that I'm leaning towards, but I'm very flexible. james-bond-gun-barrel-drawing-james-bond-gold-logo-11562900245vhodaihwgr.png

I don't have any myself but I like that concept, @robcope. Minimalist as you said, and the best image of it I've seen.

Here's an even more specific discussion if it's useful.

I’d forgotten about the specially-shot bit in the CR trailer where Bond looks into the camera sat at the casino table until they used it in the ITV trailers for the Craig season this Christmas! :)
So the shooty bit may well not be in the film. My guess is that it might well be, but I guess we can’t know.

@AgentJamesBond007 That definitely provides more color to let the artist know more of what I'm trying to do. Thanks!
