Dutch radio interview Jeroen Krabbé on The Living Daylights

edited June 2012 in Actors Posts: 5
Yesterday actor Jeroen Krabbé (Gen. Koskov) was on Dutch radio to tell about his 007 adventure The Living Daylights. In this 35-minutes interview, Krabbé recalls: back in 1986 he was up for the Bond role, when both Dalton and Brosnan weren't able to fill in the role due to other projects.

Dutch newspapers got the news and quoted Krabbé as 'the only Dutch Bond candidate'. Because of the commotion, Krabbé explained to our website (Bond Blog) he was never a serious contender. It was just Barbara Broccoli once told him he was 'on the list'...

With all due respect, @bondblog, this is an English forum. 99 % Of our members will find it difficult if not entirely impossible to understand.

If you can spare the time it would be appreciated if you could translate the entire conversation and post it here. I could but I can't spare the time myself. Otherwise, this thread has little purpose being a thread of its own. Thank you. ;-)

It really is interesting I must say. The talks about the Broccoli's is great fun.

I love when he says that he still has contact with Dalton, MGW, Babs, d'Abo, ...

Apparently, he once talked (jokingly no doubt) to Babs about coming back as Koskov (remember: he didn't die in the film as far as we can tell) but he doubts it'll ever happen. ;-)

I always think of Jeroen Krabbé as the slimy Dr Charles Nicholes from The Fugitive as that was the first film I ever saw him in. I don't think I've actually seen him in any other films besides that and The Living Daylights.

I'll translate the bit that's underneath the interview:
Krabb'e recently was a guest in the NTR radio show ' Hero's of the past' which themed on James Bond, and in particular, The Living Daylights. In the interview which can be seen here in it's entirety, Krabbe tells he once was in the race of becoming Bond

" My agent, Jeremy Conway suggested, when Pierce Brosnan couldn't play the role, I might be an adequate candidate" tells us Krabbe Bond Blog from his holiday adress in Sardinia. " I believe Barbara [Broccoli] reacted rather laughingly. And rightfully so! I wasn't interested in the role at all - it's always more fun to play the baddy!

Well, it's not a translation, but I worked out the whole interview in text. Try to use a translation applictation. I'm sure it will give you an idea of what they were talking about. ...It was all about Bond of course :) Have fun!

I love the The Living Daylights poster in background.

Thanks for the translations all. It's great to here he is much further along than on speaking terms with those involved, unlike some people!

I love TLD, but he is not the strongest part of the film. In fact, the villains are not great in TLD - its main weakness.

Apparently he's a painter these days.

Maybe it's just his campy Koskov character above all else, but I'm pleased we never saw Krabbe as James Bond, even though I know he can play serious in other releases such as The Fugitive or No Mercy, and having a Netherlands Bond, something just doesn't sit right with that, the man is a very good actor, but he's no tangible James Bond

I'm pleased they spared him at the end of Daylights but must assume that he would be executed by some means when Puskin has him taken away at the end, I hope they just gave him hard labor or something, he didn't really deserve a death sentence, I couldn't even imagine him holding a gun to somebody, sort of gets other people to do his dirty work etc

I thought he was excellent in "No Mercy" as well.

    Duty has no sweethearts.

I wish he had had a bit more menacing scene than "if another agent were to be...eliminated."

'I like' or, I smile sometimes even, when Koskov arrives at the Blaydon Safe House and M and Frederick Gray are there and Bond arrives and he jumps out his seat and starts hugging and kissing Bond, and Dalton pulls this face like.. 'what the -'

and they go through the list of items that Bond got for him, 'that is peasant food to us but with caviar it is Ok' etc, and, 'Bollinger RD, The Best - Superb Mister Bond, Superb'

and M gets agitated and says 'do you mind if we can begin now' etc

It reminds me a bit of when they're playing cards in Casino Royale and LeChiffre gets annoyed at the drinks ordered

and at the end and Pushkin arrives in Tangiers and Koskov is 'saved' and does his thing again and starts hugging etc General Pushkin, 'Oh thank you, Oh thank you'

Pushkin - 'In the diplomatic bag'

and Koskov pulls this face and is hurried off screen, he was a great comedy character

He was so likable in TLD but in that Richard Gere, Kim Bassinger film "No Mercy" he played a brutal gang leader set in the Bayous. He was quite nasty.

It has always been my conviction that they picked the wrong Dutch actor to be baddie, they should have gone for Rutger Hauer imho.

He was one of my favourite villains, and one of the reasons I like TLD so much. I just like him, he's adorable! That shouldn't be the description of a villain but that's how I feel about his character. That's why it's so original. I also liked him in Ocean's 12 (my favourite of the 3), interesting character.

Oh he's great; I always enjoy him. I even remember him well from the sweet little movie that most on here will have probably not seen or liked - Ever After, the Drew Barrymore take on Cinderella. I enjoyed that film. Krabbe is usually memorable, and he is still acting for sure.
